# controlled substances

## Visual Elements

a book in light muted blue with big title in black in the middle that reads “CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES”.

## Cultural Context

*Controlled Substances: A Chemical and Legal Guide to the Federal Drug Laws* by Alexander Shulgin and Tania Manning. Shulgin is the chemist who synthesized and self-tested over 200 psychoactive compounds, documenting them in PiHKAL and TiHKAL. This book catalogues the legal scheduling of drugs under US federal law — written by the same person who created many of the substances being scheduled.

<!-- justification
## Justification

Shulgin wrote the book on drug scheduling law — literally — after personally synthesizing many of the substances being scheduled. The irony is the point.
