<![CDATA[Create More Than You Consume ✍️]]> http://localhost:10104/?p=2100 Fri, 05 Jan 2024 16:32:55 +0000 https://mikestott.me/?p=2100

Hey there fellow creators and welcome to the first issue of Creator Central. Every two weeks I write about topical areas in the Creator Economy as well as how to get started (or continue) with your content creation.

This issue: Create more than you consume. Subscribe to be emailed future issues where I'll go deeper into topics such as content creation, audience growth and earning a living online.

Another year has passed us by. It's now 2024 and we've all got those New Year resolutions.

  • I'll go to the gym more.
  • I'll see my extended family more.
  • I'll spend more time with my friends.
  • I'll eat healthier.
  • I'll lose 10kgs / 20kgs or more.

All these resolutions come down to one thing. More time. You want more time to be able to spend at the gym, with family or friends. More time to cook healthier foods and more time to sleep.

I implore you to add one more thing to your list. Then move it to the top. I want you to commit to creating more than you consume.

What do I mean by that? Why would you do that?

You'll thank me in a year from now if you stick to it. Seriously, you will.

Create more than you consume.

We all use our phones more and more. Sure, we block notifications these days but we still doom scroll. We might listen to podcasts. We might watch YouTube channels.

We're consumers. To be able to consume, people need to create. I want you to think about shifting the balance of the scales from consuming to creating.

This means if you spend 1 hour watching TV, spend 2 hours working on your new website or blog or newsletter.

Why be a creator?

Here's the thing. The creator economy is going crazy right now. More and more people are realising that you can earn a (very good) living online being a creator.

Source: Stripe

If you feel like you have a face for radio (you don't) you can still create in other ways

  • Start a podcast
  • Start a Newsletter (like this one)

You can even join the Creator Economy without directly being a creator by offering things like YouTube video editing.

The creator road is long 🛣️

Before you commit to being a creator. The road is long. It might take a year (or more) of consistent content creation to start seeing results.

That's where I can help. Every two weeks I'll be covering content creation, audience growth and monetisation.

Sound good? You know what to do.

<![CDATA[5 Creators To Follow And Why]]> http://localhost:10104/?p=2178 Fri, 19 Jan 2024 21:57:32 +0000 https://mikestott.me/?p=2178

This issue: 5 Creators To Follow And Why. Subscribe to be emailed future issues where I'll go deeper into topics such as content creation, audience growth and earning a living online.

Wait. I thought we were creating more than we consumed? Why are you highlighting 5 creators to follow? We learn from others.

I will never stop learning.

The first and most important line of the creed means that you’re never finished. There is always more to learn. Your list of unread books is always going to be longer than the ones you’ve read.

The enemy of this is thinking you’re right, putting too much weight on your experience, or passing up an opportunity to understand someone’s point of view.

Automattic creed

<![CDATA[Year in review 2023]]> http://localhost:10104/?p=2197 Mon, 29 Jan 2024 09:08:30 +0000 https://mikestott.me/?p=2197

Wow - it's been a few years since I did a year in review (2017 was the last over at Epic Plugins). If you've followed along with those - this site is my new home for year in reviews going forwards.

What have you missed in 2018-2022 - rounding up those years in quick bullets:

Phew, now you're quickly up to speed. I'm starting these reviews in more detail again. While I'll write internal performance self-reviews, there's just something a bit different about writing a full year in review for your blog.

I found year in reviews therapeutic when I wrote them. People also actually liked to read them too. So let's create more of them.

Mike.

Onto my 2023 year in review

These year in reviews will be slightly different than when I used to write them when running my own business. The main thing that's changed is I can't share revenue $$$s transparently.

If that was your gig, click the "x" at the top of the browser window. If you're still interested then read on. What I will be covering is family, travel, health and work. Here's a table of contents for you to jump to the part that interests you. Or, just read the whole lot 😊.

Table of Contents

    Family life

First up family. I've got two young boys who are coming up to 4 and 2 years old (7th Feb and 20th Feb). They're a handful. Sleepless nights can really drain your productivity and throw you off your game.

I'm firmly in the 5am club and not for having the focus time, more for comforting a little one who is teething, or just waking up too flipping early. I made a montage of 2023 highlights (there were way more of these than I could fit in the reel).

Definitely a handful, and there's times when I'm being the centre of a tantrum that I think "they didn't portray it like this in the movies".. but those are outweighed by the cuter moments.

We had to do a sleep study on Zach - he coughs a lot in the night, vomits a lot and generally has been having horrible moods. After a few months of waiting (hi, NHS) it turns out he has sleep apnoea and will need his tonsils and adenoids out.

    Travel

Next up, where did I visit in 2023. I like to put these down because it grounds me in just how lucky I am that I can get to see the world, both through work and with family. Jan & Feb I was on paternity leave for Axel, and Mar & April I was settling back into work and into a new team (more on that later).

    • May - Cyprus for a family holiday
    • Jun - Athens WCEU representing Jetpack
    • Jun - Wales for Haven and to catch up with Woody
    • Sep - Malaga for the Jetpack division meet up which was ace.
    • Sep - Lanzarote for a catch up with lads, lads, lads.
    • Oct - Haven (again) this time the grandparents came. Didn't see them.
    • Dec - UAE (Abu Dhabi) this was great, but the last time we can go in term-time.

    Health

Firstly, I'm OCD for weighing myself way more than I should. I've managed to keep my weight pretty much the same as it's been for a couple of years. Although recently I've been working out more and lifting more 🏋️ - I just need to sort out the nutrition side and drop about 10kgs.

    Weight progress over time

    Gym and fitness

I've generally remained healthy but by no means ate well or lost any weight. I'm carrying some Christmas weight. Christmas 1995. I've also been struggling with shoulder tendonitis throughout the year (the past few years really) but have been doing regular physio. Since the end of October 2023 I've been part of a new gym.

    fitness report
OK, this is from a 2024 workout. It's the first I found.

The main thing that's helped me stick with a gym this time is it's all class based. You book into a class, it's 45 minutes long and there's others doing the same workout structure. It goes a bit like this:

    • Section A: 14 minutes, curve runner. 0.1m "on" and 0.1m recovery.
    • Section B: Floor exercises. Various bodyweight, kettlebells, dumbells
    • Section C: Strength. A compound (5 deadlifts, 5 hang cleans) while your partner does 5 cals on an assault bike.

The workouts vary each day (Fridays are all partner workouts) and they progress over a 12 week period. The main thing I like about this setup is that it's a block in my calendar, and there's accountability from the trainers and people who you train with.

    Health vitals

I've also tracked my health for a while now. When I found out I was becoming a Dad with Zach, I went for blood works at the local GP just to check everything was OK. I was called in with high cholesterol (turns out genetic) and have been on statin's for a few years (you can see it started up just under 7.5, the first reading was closer to 9).

    Cholesterol readings for health tracking

Through work I get a fuller body MOT every 2 years (via Bupa) and when I did my first one of those in 2022 it showed my blood sugars (HbA1c) were towards the high end (but not out of range). I'm a stickler for eating a snack in front of Netflix on TV nights.

Because of this, I've also started monitoring my blood sugars as I don't want to slip into the risk of becoming diabetic. As mentioned above, I've started working out more towards the end of October - so I'm interested to see what my next reading will be.

This is likely to be in my 2024 full body MOT which I need to book. Thriva I do tests every 6 months now because my results have settled down and are in range (plus, I suck at doing the finger prick blood draws and actually getting the blood to fit into the vial - it ends up everywhere).

    Garmin Vivoactive 5

This is bleeding into 2024 a bit more than I'd like, but right at the end of 2023 I got myself a Garmin Vivoactive 5 to keep track of my Body Battery. I've found it really helps keep me on top of whether I've:

    • Had a good enough sleep to feel fully recharged
    • Whether I'm coming down with something
    • Whether I've overdone it with exercise and need to take a day off

I'd highly, highly recommend getting something that can monitor your energy levels throughout the day. It's helping me to keep more focussed, rest rather than push through and know if i'm starting to get sick.

I just need to get that sleep nailed (c'mon kids, start sleeping through).

    Work (Automattic & Jetpack)

It's crazy when I think about it, but it'll be 5 years in 2024 since I joined Automattic after ZBS CRM was acquired. It's been a rollercoaster ride, with 2 babies and a year of generous parental leave (6 months for each child). Since this is the first year in review since I joined - like the above I want to touch on some of the achievements from those first 5 years!

    • I've helped rebrand Zero Bullshit CRM => ZBS CRM => Jetpack CRM.
    • I hosted 40 customer interviews for Jetpack CRM to help shape the roadmap.
    • The CRM team is now 6 people, up from 2 of us at acquisition.
    • Active installs have grown from 1k at acquisition, to 40k today.
    • I left the CRM team in 2022 and moved to Jetpack Boost to help growth.
    • Since then the ARR has 10x and active installs has grown to 300k.

    2023 at Automattic (still Jetpack)

I returned from parental leave at the end of Feb 2023 and moved out of the Boost team into the marketing team as a Product Growth engineer. Widening my responsibilities from just Boost, to all the products in the Jetpack division. Here's a peek behind the curtain on what I worked on in 2023 and what impact that's had in the WordPress space.

    Showing fewer Jetpack admin notices

Reviewing and iterating on the Jetpack plugin admin notices was one of my focuses for first part of the year. From understanding how much revenue they were driving, to how much pain they were bringing to people trying to use Jetpack on their WordPress site.

    Jetpack admin noticies

My work here also involved removing notices which weren't effective and showing fewer in general even within the Jetpack pages.

Admin notices across WordPress are still a pain, but at least with Jetpack now our product nudges are contained to only Jetpack pages and not the rest of the WordPress admin area.

    Release posts and feature announcements

I've written a quite a few of these for Jetpack (you can see them all here) the post author is currently set to the release lead, but the writing of the content falls to the marketing team. I'd like to continue improving how we promote all the new stuff that goes out in each monthly release of Jetpack.

I firmly believe that there's a lot that Jetpack can do that people just don't know about. Let's change that.

    Promotions and cross-promotions

Over 2023 I've worked on a bunch of promotions of new features for the products in the Jetpack family. An example being the Jetpack Boost image analyzer and the video which went out alongside it.

    https://youtu.be/wxXvx6XSy6U?si=9DDF3NdNOzJwWm8g

    Jetpack Newsletter launch

Sending "new post" notifications has been a thing in Jetpack for the longest time. However there's been a lot of work done to enable people to use WordPress to run their Newsletter (similar to how you could choose to do it over at substack, ghost or beehiiv).

For this we have a product team working on the features that are released but we've not given it chance to get up on stage. I was involved in getting the stage ready. For those keen on the details that was:-

    • Reviewing the product flows for sites running Jetpack.
    • Working with the product team to make sure there's no glaring holes.
    • Creating the landing page and copy on jetpack.com.
    • Putting together the "look inside" video (watch it below).
    • Drafting the content for the blog announcement.
    • Planning and creating the email campaign timed to the feature release.
    https://youtu.be/iiGBhNcoMEQ?si=kaoSK9mFdTm03jEa

The voice was created with AI, but the storyboard, editing and production I put together - with some great in-house music from one of our designers who makes music as a hobby.

    Jetpack Creator launch

Riding the coat-tails of the Newsletter launch - and from diving in deep to that particular part of the product I shaped the concept of a brand new product for Jetpack. Jetpack Creator. Here's the teaser video for that which I put together with more of a focus on the types of creators who can use Jetpack.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BoKp6Mlc3Os

I even launched it on X / Twitter. It's a proud moment, even if the video is a bit "stocky" as Devin Walker kindly put it 🫠.

    https://twitter.com/mikestottwp/status/1721792122368459162?s=20
    Launching on X / Twitter

In addition to all the same things as the Newsletter launch, this also involved

    • Getting buy-in from stakeholders in the division and at Automattic
    • Reviewing competitors and deciding on a price point
    • Setting up the product so it works in Jetpack
    • .. {all the launch things, landing page, working with design, blog, email etc}

In addition, I also jumped on a couple of podcast episodes to talk about the launch and that was a lot of fun. I'd love to spend time doing more of that.

    WP Product Talk

For this I spent time with Katie Keith of Barn2 Plugins and Amber Hinds talking about building audiences for your product and why it matters.

    https://www.youtube.com/live/rywMnUxRgt4?si=J0HP1JvqfaNH00zO
    The WP Minute

This was with Matt Medeiros and was more focussed on the Creator space and the Jetpack offering in particular. You can catch it here.

I'm keen to see how continuing to shape the Creator offering fares into 2024 and beyond as there's even more that Jetpack can offer here.

    Many, many email campaigns

OK, more like eight. It's a little different when working on a product the scale of Jetpack. The email comms go out to millions of people and they're designed, copy written, reviewed and then translated into 16 different languages before being sent out by our email software.

It takes a bit more time than simply opening Mailchimp but it's been nice to learn the ins and outs of campaigns at scale.

    A new site launch

The final thing to touch on is I've launched this new site, 100% built with the 2024 theme and using Gutenberg blocks. My old site was a bit spaghetti on the wall. Here I'll be writing my fortnightly newsletter as well as some thought provoking articles going into more detail about content creation and how you can grow your audience.

I'll be doing all that while doing exactly the same myself - growing a new site from 0. It's exciting to see where I can take this in a year.

Where can you follow me for more?

For 2024, I'm doing two things with more focus 1) I'm more active on X/Twitter (follow me here) and I'm aiming to release a new YouTube video every two weeks (you can subscribe to my channel here).

Finally, if you want to receive my Newsletter where I write about content creation (including how you can develop / create great content for your WordPress site) you can subscribe below.

On 30th Jan 2024, Syed Balkhi announced on WPBeginner that he had invested in GrooveHQ.

This excited me for three reasons:

    1. I love Groove, we used it for ZBS CRM and I even wrote a connector for it.
    2. I’m actually a fan of Awesome Motive’s products, having used plenty and even written CRM extensions for OptinMonster and MemberMouse.
    3. My UK WordPress friends Chris & Richard (HeroThemes) joined the WPBeginner Growth Fund last year - I’ve heard great things about the mastermind program.

Syed Balkhi (Awesome Motive CEO) was so kind to spare some time answering some questions I had and shared some great advice about how he keeps on top of everything. He also shared what advice he has for creators who have aspirations to follow in his footsteps. Here’s what I asked him

Groove joins a WordPress fund - are plugins on the way?

We will certainly have integration plugins for WP eCommerce solutions to make it easy for customers. More WordPress plugins like this. The WPBeginner Growth Fund started off focusing on WordPress businesses but expanded as opportunities arose - I invest in more than just WordPress businesses now.

Awesome Motive has over 40 brands (either owned or invested in) - how do you do it?

I am appreciative of everyone who gives me so much credit and think that I am a superhuman who can run all these businesses, stay on top of everything day to day, etc. But the reality is that I am not a superhuman.

I am a blogger (content creator) who turned into an investor over time because I pay attention to what users really need vs. what the noise in the market is.

I think one thing people don't easily see from outside is that all our companies are independently run (no shared teams). They are totally separate companies.

The only thing common is that I have an investment stake in it. That's all. When I partner / invest in a company, the biggest change is focus on fundamentals. Listening to users and giving them what they need (no shiny object : distractions).

I truly believe that you can't build solutions to solve problems that you don't fully understand and I want us to be focused on understanding the users pain point.

I truly believe that you can't build solutions to solve problems that you don't fully understand.

Groove is similar to Heroic Inbox - is there a conflict there?

All investments are independant and operate independently with their respective founders / leadership. My job is to give strategic guidance and input.

Heroic Inbox is shaping up to be a great product. Recently HeroThemes also launched their AI features too. I expect great things there as well. Check out the new AI features to help you support your users.

Those that want a self hosted help desk would undoubtedly prefer Heroic Inbox. Others who want an affordable cloud solution will use Groove.

We had similar with ZBS CRM being acquired by Automattic and a few months later Salesforce (a cloud based CRM) invested in Automattic - it’s interesting to see that both cloud and self-hosted can co-exist and run synergies from one another

How do you stay sane when people throw shade?

An unfortunate part of being online is that you will always be subject to trolls / hate. At any time you can choose to focus on the positives ... or let others hate / attacks / lies ruin your day. I choose to focus my energy on the positives / truths because that's how I can make the maximum positive impact in the world. I know what we are doing is making a real difference in people's lives.

Matt Mullenweg has been getting a lot of unfair criticism especially considering the positive impact he has had in the open source world and in so many lives including mine.

It's not healthy for the community, or the WP project to have this level of toxicity. Anyone who deeply cares about WordPress needs to embrace positivity.

I tweeted about this unfairness recently too. It’s unfair and paints WordPress in a bad light.

    https://twitter.com/mikestottwp/status/1746979651065397260?s=20

Thanks again Syed for taking the time to answer my questions and it’s great to see someone who started out just with content creation go on to do great things and now be involved in so many products that help businesses succeed.

If you want to learn more about Syed - I’d highly recommend checking out his year in review posts. Reading his year in review post inspired me to publish my own year in review after a 5 year hiatus. You can also learn more about Awesome Motive here.

    <![CDATA[SEO optimised content for creators]]> http://localhost:10104/?p=2389 Fri, 02 Feb 2024 17:11:27 +0000 https://mikestott.me/?p=2389

This issue: SEO optimised content for creators. Subscribe to be emailed future issues where I'll go deeper into topics such as content creation, audience growth and earning a living online.

In this issue I wanted to distill down SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) for content creators and how you can start writing seo articles that bring you more traffic to your website.

If you want to grow your audience, then creating content that is seo optimised is a solid first step to take.

Start growing your traffic with seo articles
Getting started with SEO for this site

    Why SEO optimised content matters?

What's the point in having a newsletter sign up form or a product to sell if you aren't bringing any traffic to your website. You bring traffic to your website through writing seo optimized content (amongst other things).

Which SEO tools should I use?

As a content creator, running a website on WordPress I use a combination of two things and I'll go into each of those in this issue of the newsletter.

Tool #1: Mangools - keyword research

Doing seo without content is practically impossible. So when you're thinking about what you should write about - do some keyword research. I've just done some for this seo article which made me change my initial title idea.

Image showing seo for content creators and how it ranks.
Interestingly - there was no search volume for my initial title

Why did I choose Mangools? It's more affordable than ahrefs and I like the UI. It's the same team behind uptimerobot and I think they make beautiful looking websites with a lot of great content supporting the product.

Tool #2: A WordPress SEO plugin

I'm still dipping my toe into this one but I'm giving Rank Math a try. It seems nice so far and I particularly like how it grades my content as I write it and gives me things to fix along the way.

There's some things I'm not 100% on, e.g. I don't think every article needs to be 2,500+ words in length to rank highly.

Does content length matter for SEO articles?

What I do like is that each "Error" has a useful tooltip article attached to it where I can read more and learn more about what I should be doing.

Creating content around your product, whether guides or support documentation will really help in the long run.

What else for good SEO content

    1. Additional content

You may have noticed that since the last issue I've added a new section to this site called Articles. This is so I can start producing additional content that's not emailed out but I can start aiming for particular keywords or audiences to bring them to the site.

I'm creating content there that I can share, that's topical (e.g. Awesome Motive acquiring Groove) and more importantly that I'm passionate about.

If you write amazing seo content but don't share it anywhere or build backlinks to it then you'll be sitting on empty traffic for longer than you'd like. You can #buildinpublic over on Twitter but if you don't actually share your content - it's unlikely to gain any backlinks.

If you don't actually share your content - it's unlikely to gain any backlinks

Building backlinks is a big enough topic for a newsletter issue in itself.

    3. Faster websites

Shameless promotion here, but without a fast website you can get stuck in the mud. Some things I do here when creating content for SEO is:-

    • I made sure my images are around 900px wide.
    • I'll compress them through tinyPNG so they're light.
    • I'll rename them from screenshot-10308308-209.png to seo-articles.png for example.

On top of that, I'll run Jetpack Boost on my site and WP Super Cache to do some caching of content.

    4. Google Search console

Finally, I'll use Google Search console and make sure I've submitted my sitemap.xml. I have this all setup through the Google Site Kit WordPress plugin which is super easy to get started with and I see the dashboard every time I log in to my website.

    Want to learn more?

This is a heavily diluted down article on seo optimised content - if you want to learn more checkout the very detailed guide on SEO for beginners by Mangools.

That’s all for this issue of the Newsletter – catch you in the next one.

    <![CDATA[How to turn your passion into profit 💰]]> http://localhost:10104/?p=2483 Thu, 08 Feb 2024 18:46:19 +0000 https://mikestott.me/?p=2483

Learn how to turn your passion into profit. In this interview, I’m featuring Woody. Woody and I are no strangers. We co-founded Zero BS CRM which later got acquired by Automattic. After hitting burnout and leaving Automattic to focus on his health, he’s back with another business - aimed to help software engineers with one of the trickiest things for them - marketing their products.

As a marketer working for a software company, this new direction excites me for three reasons:

    • Woody has a strong background in hybridism and working on what has impact.
    • He’s been there, done that - exiting software businesses for profit.
    • I just love self-paced courses and I’m excited to sign up for this one.

For those who don’t know you, who is Woody?

    Hey Mike 👋

Well first and foremost these days I’m a maker. For most of my life that’s software, but I’ve also dabbled in writing science fiction, building a cabin, food forests, and making a bunch of other stuff with my hands. In this context though I started writing code as a kid, and that progressed until recently. I’ve just gone over the ‘made all my money in software’ 15 year mark. I’ve done that as a freelancer, solopreneur, co-founder, and through joint ventures, and I’ve had a few exit’s 🙂

Your last exit was with Zero BS CRM, a WordPress CRM plugin, do you always build your software on WordPress?

Yeah, wow, mad to think that was almost 5 years ago! I am very fond of WordPress. Since I first started making websites I’ve used WP, and many of my businesses serviced WP users, so I’ll likely always build things on top of it because it’s a codebase that is deep in my neural pathways.

Having said that - I am a generalist and experimentalist by nature, so I’m always dabbling with new technology and approaches. Each time I have a new idea I weigh up my options for efficacy. Often my stack will be PHP based, and sometimes that’ll hitch into WP.

Build Profit looks interesting - why does it matter? What impact do you expect it to have?

Buildprofit matters because I see a generation of developers who have gone hard into engineering but then realised that to some extent they want to be craftspeople, or at least generate a little of their own autonomy outside of work.

I’ve just come back from a year’s sabbatical where I did a lot of thinking about my journey. I looked back on my years as a software entrepreneur and also read a lot of posts by my peers and I kept seeing the same pain.

    https://twitter.com/build_profit/status/1748328453114585371?s=20

Work can be great - and we’ve both worked at Automattic so we know what a world class working environment can offer. But not all jobs satisfy the craftsperson in us, and I’m convinced I see that when I read between the lines in our community.

I think we’re in the early stages of a fuller creator economy, and I think that means more optionality for everyone, especially software engineers. With Build Profit the impact I hope to have is in enabling, empowering, and joining other software engineers on their journey to solopreneurship, or to having a successful side-project.

Fundamentally I want to share what I’ve learned selling software from a craft developer’s point of view - starting with a course.

How did you come up with the name? No BS this time?

You know me, Mike, I love ideation. For this one I worked through a fair few names, and I’m not totally sold on BuildProfit, but I’m getting started nonetheless. I first called it StartingFresh, (read: bought a load of other domains), but Build Profit fits better.

In the end it’s been a bit of a journey to finding out what value I can add to my community (software engineers), and I think I’m happily settled on teaching them how to build profit (so many engineers are amazing at building, but less savvy at the business and marketing aspects).

    When’s the course launching?

I’m still filming and editing, but I’m making good progress. I expect to launch an alpha version for my first users at the end of the month. People can sign up here if interested.

Where can people find out more about Woody?

After a long hiatus I’m back blogging at woodyhayday.com and tweeting @woodyhayday - that channel will be a mixture of software entrepreneur, maker, and life stuff. My main project is buildprofit.io and @build_profit I’ll be blogging about the solopreneur journey there too.

Thanks for having me Mike! Keep up the good work over at Automattic.

In this article of Creator Central, my newsletter on content creation, I'm covering the often overwhelming topic of how to start a clothing brand for your startup.

I did this recently for my latest product, Jetpack Creator and below are the mockups. I think it looks good.

Steps on how to start a clothing brand in 2024

Starting a clothing brand for your startup is important because it allows you to establish a unique and recognisable identity in the market. By creating your own brand and wearing it proud, you can differentiate yourself from competitors. This can lead to increased brand loyalty, customer recognition, and people visiting your website.

You spend a lot of time working on your website, making sure it has good SEO but when it comes to real life - you're a little scared to step outside and wear your own brand. Here's the steps to starting a clothing brand for your business that others will be proud to wear too.

Step 1 - Choosing a print on demand clothing company

Partnering with a print on demand company that lets you create designs is the first step. As a startup you're not necessarily going to have lots of free time to devote to a clothing brand setup. Here's some options to get started and producing designs that you can wear within days.

I chose Printful because it was cheaper than Spr.ing and ships to the UK quickly. It also has the best order confirmation email in 2024.

Step 2 - Come up with clothing brand designs

If you have creative flair to come up with your own clothing brand ideas then go for it. If you're struggling for inspiration in 2024 to know just how to choose a clothing brand for your startup you can reach out to chat GPT.

    Creating a t-shirt clothing line in 2024

Here's some more variants of the image above, you can quickly see how easy it would be to turn these into a full clothing brand for your startup.

With the help of image generation AI models you can be quickly and easily set up with a number of different t-shirt options, even ones which aren't "on brand" as much as others but still get people googling and discovering you.

Now this would be a cool t-shirt design

Step 3 - Consider why others might purchase too

If you can settle on a design that you're happy with, but can also allow for flexibility in the designs so others may like it too you are on to a winner.

If the product logo on the front is a bit much, then think of other creative designs which can still get across your message and explore different logo placements.

Step 4 - Integrate Printful with your WooCommerce store

You need a website to sell your product. Luckily with Printful and WooCommerce it's easy to connect your products on printful to your Woo store and run under your own branding.

Here's how you can set it up:

    1. Create an Account with Printful

    2. Install WooCommerce Plugin

      • Ensure that WooCommerce is installed and activated on your WordPress site.
    3. Install Printful Integration for WooCommerce

      • Install the Printful Integration plugin from the WordPress plugin repository.
    4. Connect Printful to Your Website

      • In your WordPress dashboard, navigate to WooCommerce > Settings > Printful.
      • Click 'Connect' and log in to your Printful account to link it to your WooCommerce store.
    5. Add Printful Products to Your WooCommerce Store

      • Use the Printful dashboard to create new products.
      • Sync them to WooCommerce, where they'll appear as shop items.
    6. Adjust Printful Settings

      • Set up desired shipping and tax settings in Printful's dashboard.
    7. Fine-Tune Product Details

      • Modify product titles, descriptions, and images in WooCommerce to suit your branding.
    8. Test the Ordering Process

      • Place a test order to ensure that everything works seamlessly from store to production to shipping.
    9. Launch Your Store

      • Once testing is complete and everything is setup, launch your online clothing store to the public.

By following these steps, you'll have your clothing brand available through WooCommerce, making it easy to sell and fulfill orders with the help of Printful's print-on-demand service.

There - you've started a clothing line business and it's taken you less time than mowing your neighbours lawn.

Bonus: Distributing your clothing brand at conferences

In the exciting and fast-paced environment of a conference, offering the ability to print custom t-shirt designs on-site can be a fantastic way to engage attendees and provide them with a memorable takeaway. By setting up a mobile printing station, complete with high-quality, speedy printing equipment, you can offer personalised merchandise in real time. This interactive activity not only serves as a unique type of swag but also fosters an immersive experience that encourages participants to engage with your brand and the event, creating a lasting impression.

Printing t-shirts isn't instant so it gives you a great opportunity to talk to the person at your booth about your brand. They then take your clothing brand with them and if it's good will wear it either at home on zoom calls or out and about in public.
