30-second tour: real tool calls on real Excel and Word. All data is fictional.

## Why Office Live MCP

Your agent and model; Excel to Word to PDF; access you control; changes you can see; review and undo; free and open source

Works with  Claude Code · Claude Desktop · Cursor · Codex CLI · ZCode · VS Code
and other MCP clients

How it works: your AI agent → Office Live MCP, running locally with read-only mode, allowed folders, journal and undo → the Excel and Word files you already have open

## Try it on a real task | Ask your agent | You get | |---|---| | *“Generate Word documents and PDFs from this register using my template. Show the plan first.”* | [A document per row, previewed before generation](docs/examples/register-to-acts.md). Codes such as `007` stay text. | | *“Compare these two registers by code and show what changed.”* | [Differences matched by key](docs/examples/compare-registers.md). | | *“Read the comments in Word and propose edits. Apply them after I approve.”* | [Targeted edits recorded as tracked revisions](docs/examples/comments-to-tracked-edits.md). | **130 tools** for Excel, Word and document workflows - formulas, data cleanup, goal seek, pivots, charts, templates, comment threads and more. [Full catalog →](docs/TOOLS.md) For compact responses, searches, comparisons, issue reports, formula traces and Word outlines return at most one `officelive://` link for the whole result; request `per_match_links=true` for individual locations. `excel_write_range` keeps its existing read-back by default. Use `readback="summary"` for shape, counts, errors and up to five sample cells, or `readback="none"` to omit value echoes. Undo and journaling work as before. Lay out a sheet in two calls, each with one `office_undo` entry: ```python excel_set_dimensions(workbook="Report.xlsx", sheet="Data", column_widths={"A": 12, "B": 24, "C": 18}, row_heights={"1": 28, "2": 20}) excel_format_ranges(workbook="Report.xlsx", sheet="Data", ranges=[ {"cells": "A1:C1", "format": {"bold": True, "fill_color": "lightblue"}}, {"cells": "B2:B336", "format": {"number_format": "0.00"}}, ]) ``` `excel_set_dimensions(..., cells="", autofit="columns")` fits only the used range. Autofit rejects ranges above 100,000 cells or 1,000 affected dimensions and checks a 5-second budget between small COM calls, returning a clear error with undo for partial changes. A synchronous Excel COM call cannot be interrupted while it is running. ## Install > **Requirements:** Windows 10/11 (64-bit) and desktop Excel and/or Word. 1. **Download** the installer (`…-setup.exe`) from the [latest release](https://github.com/mikhalchankasm/office-live-mcp/releases/latest). 2. **Run it:** Next → Next → Finish. On a fresh install, detected agents are preselected; choose **full** or **read-only** access. 3. **Restart your agent** and ask: *“show me which workbooks are open in Excel”*. **Update:** run the new setup.exe over the old one, or in PowerShell (agents closed): `& ([scriptblock]::Create((irm https://raw.githubusercontent.com/mikhalchankasm/office-live-mcp/main/scripts/update.ps1)))` — [scripts/update.ps1](scripts/update.ps1) installs the latest release silently. **Uninstall:** Settings → Apps → Office Live MCP. **Data and costs:** the server runs locally, without an Office add-in; what your agent reads goes to its model provider, and the agent and model are billed under that provider's terms. ## Learn more [Full documentation](docs/DETAILS.md) · [Tool catalog](docs/TOOLS.md) · [Changelog](CHANGELOG.md) · [Comparison with Claude, ChatGPT and other MCP servers](docs/DETAILS.md#how-it-compares) · [MIT license](LICENSE)
