# Nanotations Privacy Policy Effective date: October 12, 2026 Developer: Nik Kale Nanotations helps you draw on web pages, save selected text highlights and notes, and export your annotations. It works locally in your Chrome profile. It does not require an account and does not operate a cloud storage service. ## Information processed When you draw, Nanotations processes the pointer positions, text you enter, tool settings, and other input needed to create your annotations. Drawings stay in the current page's memory and are removed when that page session ends. When you highlight text, Nanotations stores the selected passage, a small amount of nearby text used to find it again, its position, the page's full address and title, highlight color, any note you add, and timestamps. These records and your preferences are stored in Chrome's local extension storage. The extension does not read your general browser history. It saves page addresses only as part of your chosen highlights. Page text is read locally to match saved highlights. On sites where you enable automatic restoration, the extension checks the current page address for saved records and reads page text when needed to restore them. It does not create an ongoing browsing log. Exact addresses can include query parameters and hashes; saved text and exported files may include sensitive information if you choose to annotate it. When you choose Save image, Chrome captures the visible page with your annotations and saves the PNG to your chosen location. This image may contain anything visible on the page. Text exports and JSON backups contain saved passages, notes, titles, and page addresses. Backups also contain matching context and timestamps. ## Local use and sharing Nanotations has no analytics, advertising, tracking, remote-code service, or automatic data-upload feature. The developer does not receive your highlight library, notes, drawings, browsing records, or exports. The extension does not sell your data or use it for advertising, creditworthiness, or lending. You decide whether to share any exported file. Any synchronization performed by your operating system, backup service, or chosen download folder is controlled by those services, not by Nanotations. ## Permissions Temporary active-tab access and scripting provide the tools on pages you authorize. Storage keeps preferences and saved highlights locally. Downloads saves requested PNG files. Optional site access restores highlights automatically on individual sites you approve. You can revoke a site's access from the library or Chrome without deleting its saved highlights. ## Retention and deletion Saved highlights remain in the local extension library until you remove a highlight or page, clear extension data, or uninstall the extension. Uninstalling removes extension storage. It does not remove PNGs, text exports, or backups already saved as files. Delete those through your file manager. Chrome storage is limited; create backups for information you want to keep. Nanotations does not keep a server copy from which it could recover deleted data. ## Limited Use Nanotations' use and transfer of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. ## Questions For privacy questions, open an issue titled "Nanotations privacy" at https://github.com/nik-kale/Privacy-Policy/issues. Do not include sensitive page content unless you intend to share it. ## Changes This policy describes Nanotations 0.3.0. If a later release changes its data practices, this policy will be updated before those practices change.
