Handle environment checks, installation, instance setup, skill discovery, and verification. Ask before a large download, paid or remote service, replacing existing files, or changing an external system. Report the result and any incomplete step in plain language. Do not make the user copy commands from this document. Run safe setup steps yourself and report evidence. ## Boundaries 1. The Agent orchestrates setup and daily use; OKS provides the filesystem protocols, deterministic tools, and knowledge skills. 2. A source is not knowledge. New material must remain Evidence/Raw or a Candidate until a human accepts it. 3. Never create or promote Wiki knowledge merely to make verification pass. 4. Preserve `partial`, `failed`, `skipped`, and `environment_limited` states exactly. 5. Ask before downloads larger than 100 MB, paid services, remote processing of user data, replacing an existing skill tree, or overwriting instance assets. ## Setup flow ### 1. Locate an existing instance first If the user names a directory containing `_meta/` and `wiki/`, use that instance. Do not create a second knowledge base unless the user asks for one. Check the runtime requirements: ```bash python --version git --version pipx --version ``` OKS requires Python 3.12 or newer. Prefer `pipx` so the package is isolated from the system Python. ### 2. Install or upgrade OKS For a new installation: ```bash pipx install open-knowledge-studio pipx ensurepath ``` If OKS is already installed and the user asked to update it: ```bash pipx upgrade open-knowledge-studio ``` Use the official `open-knowledge-studio` package. Do not install from a personal fork or an unpinned third-party repository. ### 3. Create or refresh the instance For a new knowledge base: ```bash oks init cd ``` `oks init` creates the knowledge buckets and automatically materializes the bundled skills. Do not immediately run `oks skills-install` after a successful fresh initialization. For a non-empty directory that is not already an OKS instance, `--force` only authorizes scaffolding into that directory; it is not the asset-refresh flag. Confirm the exact directory before using it: ```bash oks init --force ``` For an existing OKS instance after a package upgrade, `--upgrade` refreshes bundled assets. Wiki, Draft, and Raw content are outside that asset copy, but bundled Profiles, configuration, hooks, and skill files may be overwritten. Inspect local changes and ask before running it: ```bash cd oks init . --upgrade ``` ### 4. Understand where skills are installed A normal initialization provides: - `.claude/skills/` for Claude Code; - `.agents/skills/` as the generic Agent skill location, including Codex discovery; - `.codex/` for Codex configuration and optional lifecycle hooks, not a second copy of the skill tree. Do not hard-code a skill count in reports. Inspect the installed directories and report the names actually present. `oks skills-install` is a maintenance command for adding missing bundled skills to an existing instance. It does not overwrite an existing skill unless `--force` is used. `--force` replaces the managed skill directories and may remove locally added skills, so require explicit approval before using it. ### 5. Enable automatic recall only when requested Hooks are optional. Skills and explicit recall work without them. When the user wants automatic recall or lifecycle integration, select the actual host: ```bash oks hook install --editor oks hook status ``` Report platform limitations exactly. On native Windows, do not claim Bash-based hooks work unless the configured host can execute them. ### 6. Install optional capabilities only for the task Inspect capability status when the user needs PDF, office, image, audio, video, or web acquisition: ```bash oks capability status ``` Explain the relevant choice before installation: - local processing favors privacy but may require large downloads and more disk; - remote processing may be faster but can cost money and transmit user data; - declining an optional capability must produce an explicit skipped or partial result, not a fake success. Never install a large model or enable a paid/remote provider without approval. ## Verify the Agent-native learning loop First verify the installation mechanically: ```bash oks status oks capability status ``` Then verify behavior through the installed skills: 1. Use the `ingest` skill on a small user-approved source. If slash commands are unavailable, read `.agents/skills/ingest/SKILL.md` and follow it. 2. Confirm that the source and evidence were saved and any reusable statement remains a Candidate. 3. Show the Candidate and its provenance to the user. Do not approve it yourself. 4. After the user accepts, modifies, or rejects it, use the `promote` skill to record that decision. 5. In a new question, use the `query` skill and report which reviewed knowledge affected the answer. `oks ingest run ` is a compatibility entry point for mechanical acquisition and extraction. It does not replace the Agent-owned Candidate and human-review workflow. ## Success report Report: - OKS package status; - active knowledge-base path; - installed skill names and their discovery locations; - optional hook status; - relevant capability status; - first learning-loop result, including what remains unreviewed. ## Failure report If setup cannot complete, stop at the failed boundary and report: ```text OKS setup incomplete.
