--- title: "S8-P05 Rejoicing in Merit and the Gate of Perfect-Luminous Host-Companion Completion: The Dharmadhātu Structure of *Tongōng* through *Cetanā*" author: "釋慧鏡 (Shi Huijing)" series: "Pointing at the Moon Academic Papers · Series Eight \"Manifestation\" (Avataṃsaka Sūtra) · Paper Five" series_short: "S8" paper_id: "S8-P05" paper_number: 5 date: "2026-04" version: "1.0" license: "CC BY-NC-SA 4.0" --- # S8-P05 Rejoicing in Merit and the Gate of Perfect-Luminous Host-Companion Completion: The Dharmadhātu Structure of *Tongōng* through *Cetanā* ## Abstract This paper argues for the doctrinal correspondence between the fifth of Samantabhadra's Ten Great Vows — "Rejoicing in Merit" (*suíxǐ gōngdé* 隨喜功德, *anumodanā-puṇya*) — and the "Gate of Perfect-Luminous Host-Companion Completion" (*zhǔbàn yuánmíng jùdé mén* 主伴圓明具德門) of the Huayan Ten Profound Gates, and constructs a two-tier clamping argument combining "the Āgama's *cetanā*-based ontology of karma" with "Huayan's dharmadhātu structure of host-companion perfect luminosity." Ordinary readers encountering the phrase "rejoicing in merit" raise three immediate doubts: why should mere rejoicing count as merit at all? Does this not collapse into a "free-rider" ethic? And why does Huayan pair the most abstruse of the Ten Gates with what appears to be the easiest of the Ten Vows? The paper first returns to canonical sources: the *Cetanā-sūtra* of the *Madhyama-āgama* (volition itself is karma), the *Upāli-sūtra* (among the three karmas, mental karma is designated gravest), and *Saṃyukta-āgama* 1288 (pure-mind giving with little wealth surpasses impure-mind giving with great wealth) — establishing the ontology that merit is grounded in *cetanā*, never in external form. The *Ekottarika-āgama* story of the lay-girl Muni is then adduced as a crucial counter-case: mere joyful rejoicing, absent vow-and-dedication, is explicitly denied merit-status by the Buddha himself, proving that "true rejoicing" and "mere verbal rejoicing" are already distinguished at the Āgama level. *Saṃyukta-āgama* 659 (the pure faith arising from giving rise to *bodhicitta* toward the Tathāgata is named the faculty of faith) provides the canonical bridge to Mahāyāna aspiration-structure, confirming that *bodhicitta*, faith, and rejoicing are three facets of the same *cetanā*. The treatise section then traces Fazang's *Huayan yīshèng jiàoyì fēnqí zhāng* — the crucial distinction of "conduct-Buddha versus position-Buddha" (*xíngfó fēi wèifó* 行佛非位佛) and the culminating "at the moment of first arousing the aspirational mind one already accomplishes full enlightenment; each embraces all as reciprocal host-and-companion" — and Fazang's *Tànxuán jì* definition of the Perfect-Luminous Host-Companion gate: "principle never arises in isolation; it must arise together with its retinue; hosts among hosts and companions among companions do not see each other, while host-turning-to-companion and companion-turning-to-host are perfect-luminous and complete in virtue." Chengguan's *Yǎnyì chāo* fourfold retinue typology (flower / person / light / dharma retinues) and Fazang's *Huányuán guān* "Mutual-Manifestation Host-and-Companion Indra's-Net Contemplation" complete the Huayan structural framework. The present author further proposes, as an original extension grounded in Chengguan's four types, a fifth type — the "conduct-retinue" (*xíng juànshǔ* 行眷屬) — as the structural bridge specifically required for pairing Vow Five with Gate Ten. The core thesis is: *the one-thought of true rejoicing is, on its ontological face, the gravest mental karma of the Āgamas, and on its structural face, the perfect-luminous host-companion completion of Huayan*. The lower tier prevents the "free-rider" reading, the upper tier prevents the "individual emotion-management" reading, and neither can be removed without collapse. The paper explicitly declares the correspondence "Rejoicing in Merit ↔ Gate of Perfect-Luminous Host-Companion Completion" as an original thesis of the present author: no explicit statement of this pairing exists in either Fazang's or Chengguan's extant commentaries, and the argument proceeds entirely from doctrinal inference compelled by the two-tier clamping. The full systematic argument for the Ten-Vows-to-Ten-Gates correspondence will be developed in S8-P10 §VI; the present P05 serves as the fully-developed advance deployment for one node of that larger structure. **Keywords:** rejoicing in merit, *anumodanā*, Gate of Perfect-Luminous Host-Companion Completion, *cetanā*, volition-is-karma, mental karma as gravest, conduct-Buddha versus position-Buddha, first-aspiration-equals-enlightenment, faith as the mother of merit, fourfold retinue, conduct-retinue, Samantabhadra's Vows, Ten Profound Gates, Huayan dharmadhātu, two-tier clamping argument --- ## I. Framing the Question When ordinary readers first encounter the phrase "rejoicing in merit" (*anumodanā-puṇya*), three doubts almost invariably surface. *First*: why should rejoicing constitute merit at all? Hearing of another's good deed, one's heart lifts in sympathy — does this really count? No money has been given, no labor expended, no time spent; on what basis does one share in another's merit? *Second*: is this not too easy? If rejoicing alone produces merit, does the doctrine not reduce to a "free-rider" ethic — others labor in practice while one stands by applauding? *Third*: why does Huayan pair this vow with the "Gate of Perfect-Luminous Host-Companion Completion"? Why is what appears to be the most abstruse of the Ten Profound Gates matched with what appears to be the easiest of the Ten Great Vows? These three questions are interlocked. The first is a doctrinal question — what is the textual ground for ascribing merit to rejoicing? The second is an ethical question — granting that ground, does the practice not become frivolous? The third is a structural question — how does this correspondence cohere within the architecture of Huayan teaching? The present paper answers all three. The mode of answer, however, is neither apologetic ("no, rejoicing is actually difficult") nor dogmatic ("the scriptures simply say so"). Rather, the two horizons of the question — the Āgama ontology of karma and the Huayan structure of the dharmadhātu — are placed on the same table, so that their interlocking can be exhibited as a single coherent answer. The answer is best stated in advance, lest the reader complete the argument without knowing where it lands: **the merit of rejoicing lies not in external form but in *cetanā* (volition); and once *cetanā* genuinely arises, the host-companion perfect-luminous structure of the dharmadhātu ensures that this single thought necessarily encompasses all roots of goodness throughout the dharmadhātu. The lower tier — the Āgama ontology — prevents rejoicing from being read as cheap free-riding. The upper tier — the Huayan dharmadhātu — prevents rejoicing from being read as private emotional exercise. Only when both tiers clamp together is the doctrine resolved.** --- ## II.A. Canonical Basis — The Sūtra Stratum Following the standing rule of these papers ("sūtras first, treatises second"), canonical sources are presented before commentarial ones. ### 2.1. The Āgama Stratum: The Ontology of Karma is *Cetanā* To understand Huayan's doctrine of rejoicing in merit, one must — counterintuitively — first return to the Āgamas, to see how the Buddha himself, in the earliest stratum of teaching, defined "karma" and "merit." #### 2.1.1. The *Cetanā-sūtra*: Volition Is Karma The *Cetanā-sūtra* of the *Madhyama-āgama* (T0026, fasc. 3) offers what is arguably the most direct ontological statement on karma in the entire Āgama corpus: *if there is karma performed with volition, I declare that one must necessarily experience its result, whether in the present life or in a later one; if there is karma performed without volition, I declare that one need not experience its result.* "Performed with volition" (*gùzuò* 故作) means "performed with *cetanā*." Here the Buddha locks the very condition for karmic establishment onto *cetanā* alone — where there is volition, there is karma; where there is no volition, there is no karma.[^1] #### 2.1.2. The *Upāli-sūtra*: Mental Karma Is the Gravest The *Upāli-sūtra* of the *Madhyama-āgama* records the dialogue between the Buddha and Upāli, a disciple of the Nirgrantha (Jain) school. Upāli's teacher held that bodily punishment was the most weighty of the three karmas; the Buddha replied directly: *among these three karmas, which are similar in this respect, I designate mental karma as the gravest.* Of the three karmas — bodily, verbal, mental — the Buddha alone judges the mental as the heaviest.[^2] This is not an abstract value-ranking but a direct statement of karmic ontology: the reason an outward act constitutes karma is precisely because it carries an inner *cetanā*; remove the *cetanā*, and the act collapses into mere physical motion — no karma at all. #### 2.1.3. *Saṃyukta-āgama* 1288: Pure-Hearted Giving with Little Wealth *Saṃyukta-āgama* 1288 extends this ontology into the domain of generosity: one who gives purely from little wealth produces a karmic fruit equal to — and in the relevant comparative passages exceeding — one who gives impurely from great wealth.[^3] Material quantity does not determine merit; the *purity of mind* determines merit. Taken together, these three passages yield the Āgama ontology of karma in its sharpest form: **the substance of karma is *cetanā*, never the external form; the quality of mind determines the quality of karma, and material magnitude is irrelevant.** #### 2.1.4. The Lay-Girl Muni: A Crucial Counter-Case If, however, one were to draw from this the simpler conclusion that "merely feeling joyful in one's heart is enough to produce merit," the Buddha himself would object. The *Ekottarika-āgama* (fasc. 38) preserves a critical counter-narrative. The lay-girl Muni witnesses bhikṣus offering lamps and is filled with joyful exultation — precisely the inner movement that "rejoicing" (*anumodanā*) later names. The Buddha then states: *if the elder bhikṣus do not make the vow, they will in the end not accomplish the buddha-path; the merit of vow-making cannot be calculated.* In plain terms: joyful exultation (*anumodanā*) absent vow-and-dedication does *not* accomplish the buddha-path.[^4] The Buddha himself, in his own words, denies the reading "rejoicing alone is meritorious." This counter-case is doctrinally decisive: it shows that the distinction between *true rejoicing* and *mere rejoicing* is already drawn at the Āgama level. Rejoicing in which *cetanā* genuinely arises and which is sealed by vow-and-dedication is true; rejoicing that remains at the verbal or merely affective surface is not. The Āgamas do not teach the simple proposition "rejoicing produces merit." What the Āgamas teach is the deeper ontology — "karma's substance is volition" — and true rejoicing carries merit *precisely because it falls within that ontology, not because it bypasses it*. #### 2.1.5. *Saṃyukta-āgama* 659: The Faculty of Faith and the Arising of *Bodhicitta* Finally, *Saṃyukta-āgama* 659 supplies a precise interface between the Āgamas and the Mahāyāna: *the pure faith that arises through giving rise to bodhicitta toward the Tathāgata — this is called the faculty of faith.* The Āgamas are commonly taken to lack the structure of "arousing bodhicitta," which is usually treated as a Mahāyāna invention. But *Saṃyukta-āgama* 659 explicitly grounds the substance of the faith-faculty in arousing *bodhicitta* toward the Tathāgata.[^5] The implication is structurally important: **arousing the aspiration, faith, and rejoicing are three facets of one and the same *cetanā***. Arousing the aspiration is *cetanā* as the fixing of direction; faith is *cetanā* as the stabilizing of texture; rejoicing is *cetanā* as resonant co-vibration in the presence of another's wholesome act. They share one substance and differ only in the occasions on which they appear. The Āgama stratum may be summarized in a single sentence: **the substance of merit is *cetanā*, never external form. True rejoicing is not easy; counterfeit rejoicing does not count.** ### 2.2. The Huayan Stratum: From the Faculty of Faith to Dharmadhātu Structure The Āgamas have established the lower tier of the ontology. When Huayan takes up this ontology, it presses it to a dharmadhātu scale. #### 2.2.1. The "Xianshou" Chapter: Faith Is the Source of the Path and the Mother of Merit The opening verses of the "Xianshou" chapter of the *Eighty-fascicle Avataṃsaka* (T0279, fasc. 14) give the most famous Huayan definition of faith: *faith is the source of the path and the mother of merit; it nourishes all wholesome dharmas, severs the net of doubt and delivers one from the stream of craving, and opens up the unsurpassed way of nirvāṇa.* Faith, here, is not merely assent to a proposition; faith is the "source of the path" (*dàoyuán* 道源) and the "mother of merit" (*gōngdé mǔ* 功德母) — the wellspring of every path of cultivation-and-realization and the womb that nurtures every merit.[^6] This definition is structurally continuous with *Saṃyukta-āgama* 659 ("the faculty of faith grounded in arousing *bodhicitta* toward the Tathāgata"), but Huayan lifts it to the level of "mother": faith is not simply the gateway — faith is, in itself, the generator of every subsequent merit. #### 2.2.2. The "Tathāgata's Manifestation" Chapter: Bodhi Universally Imprints All Mental Activity The "Rulai chuxian" (Tathāgata's Manifestation) chapter of the *Eighty-fascicle Avataṃsaka* (T0279, fasc. 52) offers a definitional formulation of the Ocean-Seal Samādhi. Its full unfolding is reserved for S8-P07; the present paper takes only the sentence directly bearing on rejoicing: *as the ocean-seal manifests the bodies of beings, it is therefore called the great ocean; as bodhi universally imprints all mental activity, it is therefore called perfect awakening.* The six characters *bodhi universally imprints all mental activity* (菩提普印諸心行) are the pivot: **the substance of perfect awakening is bodhi's universal imprinting of all mental activity**.[^7] The mental activity of every sentient being — the wholesome mind of the practitioner of wholesome acts, the cultivating mind of the cultivator, the rejoicing mind of the rejoicer — is all simultaneously imprinted by bodhi. This lays the doctrinal seed for the dharmadhātu structure of rejoicing: the single thought of rejoicing is not isolated — within bodhi's universal imprinting, it arises simultaneously with all mental activity throughout the dharmadhātu. #### 2.2.3. The *Samantabhadra-caryā-praṇidhāna* of the *Forty-fascicle Avataṃsaka*: The Full Definition of Rejoicing in Merit The *Forty-fascicle Avataṃsaka*, T0293 fasc. 40, "Entry into the Inconceivable Liberation Realm: Samantabhadra-caryā-praṇidhāna" is the original text of the Ten Great Vows. The defining passage for the fifth vow — "Rejoicing in Merit" — runs as follows: *As for what is called rejoicing in merit: in all the buddhas and tathāgatas throughout the exhaustion of the dharmadhātu, the realm of empty space, the ten directions and three times, and the kṣetras of all buddhas numerous as dust-motes — from the first arousing of the aspirational mind for the sake of all-knowledge … all their roots of goodness, I entirely rejoice in. And in all the worlds of the ten directions, among the six destinies and four modes of birth, in every kind of being, whatever merit there is, down to a single dust-mote's worth, I entirely rejoice in. All the merits of śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas throughout the ten directions and three times, whether learners or non-learners, I entirely rejoice in. And all the immeasurable difficult-to-practice ascetic practices of all bodhisattvas, and the vast merits of those aspiring to unsurpassed perfect awakening, I entirely rejoice in. As the realm of empty space is exhausted, as the realm of beings is exhausted, as the karma of beings is exhausted, as the defilements of beings are exhausted — so too my rejoicing will have no exhaustion; thought after thought continuously, without interruption, with no weariness of body, speech, or mind.* This passage must be unfolded structurally.[^8] *First*, **the cognitive object is all roots of goodness throughout the dharmadhātu**. What is rejoiced in is not "some particular wholesome act of some particular person," but the full array of wholesome roots of "all the buddhas and tathāgatas throughout the exhaustion of the dharmadhātu … all bodhisattvas … every kind of being among the six destinies and four modes of birth." The scope of the cognitive object *is* the entirety of the dharmadhātu. *Second*, **"down to a single dust-mote's worth, I entirely rejoice in."** Not even the most minute dust-mote of goodness is omitted. This is not "inclusive as far as possible" — it is "without a single omission." *Third*, **"thought after thought continuously, without interruption."** The temporal structure is continuous thought-moments without break, not a special event restricted to one particular moment. *Fourth* — and this is the most critical — **between the scope of the cognitive object and the rejoicer's single thought, there is no intermediary whatsoever**. The rejoicer does not need first to "know" which being is performing which wholesome act and where, in order then to rejoice. The cognitive object of the single thought of rejoicing is already, in the moment of that thought, the entirety of the dharmadhātu. This absence of intermediation is precisely the scriptural origin of the host-companion perfect-luminous structure to be unfolded below. Joined to the Āgama stratum, the canonical basis is now structurally complete: the Āgamas state that the substance of merit is *cetanā*; the *Avataṃsaka* states that, once *cetanā* genuinely arises within rejoicing, its cognitive object is the entirety of the dharmadhātu. The lower tier guarantees authenticity; the upper tier guarantees scope. The next section enters the treatise stratum, to see how Fazang and Chengguan build the doctrinal framework for this structure. --- ## II.B. Doctrinal Basis — The Treatise Stratum ### 2.3. Fazang's *Wǔjiào zhāng*: Conduct-Buddha Is Not Position-Buddha In treating "buddhahood at the fullness of faith" (*xìnmǎn chéngfó* 信滿成佛), Fazang's *Huayan yīshèng jiàoyì fēnqí zhāng* (T1866, fasc. 2) sets up an exceptionally precise question-and-answer that constitutes the doctrinal pivot of the present paper: *Question: If so, then one ought to say "buddhahood at the abiding stage" — why do you say "fullness of faith"?* *Answer: Because [this buddhahood] is accomplished by faith, it is the conduct-Buddha, not the position-Buddha.* The questioner's misgiving is precisely the ordinary reader's misgiving. "Buddhahood at the fullness of faith" sounds impossible: faith is only the Ten Faiths stage, with the Ten Abidings, Ten Practices, Ten Dedications, Ten Grounds, Equal Awakening, and Marvelous Awakening still to come. How could buddhahood be attained at the faith stage? Fazang's answer divides **conduct-Buddha** (*xíngfó* 行佛) from **position-Buddha** (*wèifó* 位佛):[^9] - *Position-Buddha*: the buddhahood reached when one attains the stage of Marvelous Awakening within the fifty-two-stage sequence — buddhahood as sequential accomplishment. - *Conduct-Buddha*: buddhahood at the level of conduct, in which the buddha-virtues are already complete in action even though one's stage-position remains that of an ordinary being at the faith-stage. This single distinction cuts cleanly through the vulgarizing danger of "buddhahood at the fullness of faith." The doctrine does not say "one believes a little and is then seated upon the buddha-throne." It says: *the very thought in which faith is accomplished is, at the level of conduct, a buddha's act of conduct*. The stage-positions still need to be traversed in sequence; but the conduct-virtue is already perfectly complete. The bearing of this distinction upon rejoicing in merit is direct: **the very thought of rejoicing is, at the level of conduct, a buddha's own act of rejoicing** — for buddhas everywhere rejoice in the merits of all sentient beings, and one's own single thought of rejoicing shares with the buddhas' rejoicing one and the same *cetanā*-substance. Though one's stage is that of an ordinary being, one's conduct is already a buddha's. This is not stage-jumping presumption; it is the genuine conduct-identity at the level of action. ### 2.4. Fazang Continued: At First Aspiration One Already Accomplishes Perfect Awakening In fascicle four of the same work, in the section on the Six Characteristics' perfect interfusion, Fazang offers another crowning conclusion: *Where this principle is present, all delusions and obstacles are severed at one cut — to sever one is to sever all, the delusions of nine and ten time-periods being extinguished. Conduct-virtue: to accomplish one is to accomplish all. The principle's nature: to manifest one is to manifest all. The general and the particular are mutually complete; beginning and end are everywhere equal. At the moment of first arousing the aspirational mind, one already accomplishes perfect awakening. This is so because, within the six-characteristic interfusion of dharmadhātu dependent arising, cause and effect are simultaneous, mutually-identical, sovereign, and complete in both forward and reverse direction.* The eight characters *at the moment of first arousing the aspirational mind, one already accomplishes perfect awakening* (初發心時便成正覺) are the signature statement of Huayan doctrine.[^10] First aspiration is the cause; perfect awakening is the fruit; ordinarily these are taken as two ends temporally separated. But Huayan says: under the dharmadhātu structure of six-characteristic interfusion and simultaneous cause-and-effect, the one thought of first aspiration and the fruit of perfect awakening are "mutually-identical and sovereign" — not "first aspiration shall become perfect awakening," but "first aspiration is, in the present moment, perfect awakening already accomplished." In the same passage Fazang continues: *cause and effect are simultaneous, mutually containing and mutually identical; each embraces all, becoming reciprocally host and companion. This must be deeply contemplated; in this matter there is no doubt.* The eight characters *each embraces all, becoming reciprocally host and companion* (各攝一切互為主伴) connect directly to the present paper's central theme.[^11] Cause and effect are reciprocally host and companion: when one takes cause as host, effect is companion; when one takes effect as host, cause is companion. Host and companion are not two independent things; they are two positions within a single dependent-arising structure. The corresponding configuration in rejoicing is: when the rejoicer (cause) is host, the merit of the one rejoiced in (effect) is companion; and conversely. ### 2.5. Fazang's *Tànxuán jì*: The Definition of the Host-Companion Gate In the listing of the New Ten Profound Gates in fascicle one of the *Huayan jīng tànxuán jì* (T1733), Fazang places the Gate of Perfect-Luminous Host-Companion Completion as the tenth and gives the following definition:[^12] *Because in this perfect-teaching dharmadhātu principle never arises in isolation, it must arise together with its retinue. As in the "Tathāgata Names" chapter and similar passages, in each of the ten directions there is a single buddha: when one is taken as host, the rest are companions. Hosts among hosts and companions among companions do not see each other, while host-turning-to-companion and companion-turning-to-host are perfect-luminous and complete in virtue.* This definition has three structural layers and must be unfolded in turn. *First*, **principle never arises in isolation; it must arise together with its retinue** — this is the "no-solitary-arising law." No single dharma in the perfect-teaching dharmadhātu can be established alone; when it arises, it arises bearing its retinue. There is no such thing as "an isolated dharma." *Second*, **hosts among hosts and companions among companions do not see each other** — the most counter-intuitive line. The meaning is: when one dharma is host, one cannot see another dharma also as host (two hosts cannot share a single frame); when one dharma is companion, one cannot see another also as companion (two companions cannot share a single frame either). Why? Because "host" and "companion" are *positional* roles relative to a perspective, not *substantive* properties — a single observational angle can have only one host. *Third*, **host-turning-to-companion and companion-turning-to-host are perfect-luminous and complete in virtue** — this is the doctrinal heart. The two positions are not fixed. Any dharma can occupy the host position, and when it does, every other dharma instantly assumes the companion position around it; reverse the perspective and the configuration flips entirely. "Perfect-luminous" (*yuánmíng* 圓明) means: in either configuration, the relationship is fully illumined without remainder. "Complete in virtue" (*jùdé* 具德) means: the companion in that moment already possesses, in full, the virtue of the host. The companion does not "borrow" the host's virtue, nor does it "receive a share" of it; at the moment of being companion, the companion *is* the host's full virtue, viewed from a different position. The bearing of all of this upon the fifth vow is now in plain view, though its full unfolding awaits §III. In a structure where companion already possesses the full virtue of host, the rejoicer (companion) at the moment of true rejoicing already possesses the full merit of the one rejoiced in (host) — not by transfer, not by share, not by analogy, but by the structural constitution of the dharmadhātu itself. §II.B continues in Part 3 with Chengguan's fourfold retinue, Fazang's Indra's-Net contemplation from the *Huányuán guān*, and the original proposal of a fifth "conduct-retinue" — after which §III through §IX bring the two-tier clamping argument, the Middle Way corrections, the failure-point coda, and the cross-series indices to their completion. --- ### 2.6. Chengguan's *Yǎnyì chāo*: The Fourfold Retinue In the *Yǎnyì chāo* (T1736, fasc. 11), Chengguan supplements Fazang's host-companion structure with a remarkably concrete schema — the **fourfold retinue** (*sì lèi juànshǔ* 四類眷屬):[^13] 1. **Flower-retinue** (the class of objects): a single jewelled lotus must arise together with lotuses in number equal to the dust-motes of the world. 2. **Person-retinue** (the class of attendant bodhisattvas): when from between the Buddha's brows the Bodhisattva Excellent-Sound emerges, he must emerge together with immeasurable bodhisattva-attendants. 3. **Light-retinue** (the class of functional fields): when the Buddha emits light, immeasurable lights necessarily arise together as retinue. 4. **Dharma-retinue** (the class of scriptures): a single sūtra must arise together with sūtras in number equal to the dust-motes of buddha-fields. "Retinue" (*juànshǔ* 眷屬) is simply "companion." Chengguan's point is that any single dharma in the dharmadhātu, at the moment of arising, necessarily arises bearing its same-class retinue, and the retinue shares full virtue with the host it accompanies. This schema is the most concrete display of the host-companion principle — no longer abstract doctrine but the actual mode of every dharma's existence within the dharmadhātu. On this basis the present author proposes, as an original extension, **a fifth class: the conduct-retinue** (*xíng juànshǔ* 行眷屬). When a single wholesome act — rejoicing included — arises, it necessarily arises bearing as its retinue all wholesome roots throughout the ten directions and three times. This extension is not foreign imposition but the natural consequence of Chengguan's own four: if flower, person, light, and dharma all bear retinues, how could conduct alone be retinueless? The proposal of a conduct-retinue brings the host-companion structure directly down to the register of vow-and-practice and supplies the structural bridge specifically required for pairing "rejoicing in merit" with the "Gate of Perfect-Luminous Host-Companion Completion." (The full defense of "conduct-retinue" as an original thesis will be developed in S8-P10 §VI within the systematic ten-vows-to-ten-gates correspondence. The present P05 only soft-launches it, securing the advance ground for P10's hard launch.) ### 2.7. Fazang's *Huányuán guān*: The Indra's-Net Contemplation of Mutually-Manifesting Host and Companion In the *Xiū huayan àozhǐ wàngjǐn huányuán guān* (T1876), Fazang internalizes the host-companion principle into a contemplative method:[^14] *Sixth: the Indra's-net contemplation of mutually-manifesting host and companion. Taking oneself as host and others as companion; or taking one dharma as host and all dharmas as companion; or taking one body as host and all bodies as companion. Wherever a single dharma is raised, host and companion are immediately gathered together, layer upon layer without end.* The eleven characters *wherever a single dharma is raised, host and companion are immediately gathered together, layer upon layer without end* are Fazang's contemplative formula for host-companion perfect luminosity. Installed onto rejoicing: the single thought of rejoicing is precisely the "single dharma raised," and at that thought "host and companion are immediately gathered together" — the dharmadhātu in its entirety, as cognitive object, is the companion, and one's own thought is the host; reverse the focus, and all rejoicers throughout the dharmadhātu become hosts and oneself becomes companion. Layer upon layer without end. Fazang then adduces the example of Sudhana's vision of the tower: entering Vairocana's adorned tower, Sudhana sees that *before each tower stands a Maitreya, before each Maitreya stands a Sudhana, and each Sudhana stands with palms joined before his Maitreya*. This recursive specular structure is the host-companion principle made visible. (The full unfolding of Sudhana's tower-contemplation will be handled in S8-P09 as the prologue to Sudhana's pilgrimage; the present paper takes it only as a pictorial illustration of host-companion perfect luminosity.) ### 2.8. Jingyuan: The Transition from the Old to the New Ten Profound Gates Jingyuan's *Jīn shīzǐ zhāng yúnjiān lèijiě* (T1880) records a doctrinally crucial historical fact: Fazang's Ten Profound Gates exist in two versions, old and new, and **the new version replaces the old gate "Gate of Mind-Only Reversal Accomplishing Goodness" (唯心迴轉善成門) with the "Gate of Perfect-Luminous Host-Companion Completion" (主伴圓明具德門)**.[^15] The doctrinal motive for this replacement runs deep. "Mind-only reversal" privileges the cognizing subject (consciousness) as center: all things turn upon mind, and mind is the center. "Host-companion perfect luminosity," by contrast, declares unambiguously that **there is no fixed center**: every dharma can be center, every dharma can equally be retinue. **This is Huayan's pivotal move from a "consciousness-centric" framing toward a "dharmadhātu-centric" framing.** The bearing on rejoicing is precise: rejoicing is not "this heart of mine extending to embrace the other" (a mind-only structure, in which mind remains the center) but "the other and I being reciprocally host and companion within the dharmadhātu" (a host-companion structure, with no fixed center). The former still smuggles in a self/other dualism with a hierarchical subordination; the latter dissolves that subordination root and branch. Chengguan's image — *as the pole-star occupies its place and the host of stars revolves around it* — describes the host-companion relation under one observational angle, but that very relation reverses under the next: even the pole-star can be retinue to some other star. The treatise stratum is now complete. We turn to the doctrinal clamping itself. --- ## III. The Two-Tier Clamping: Āgama Ontology and Huayan Dharmadhātu Structure We now bring the Āgama and Huayan strata to a single table. ### 3.1. The Structure of the Clamp **Lower tier (Āgama — guarding against the spurious):** - Volition is karma (*Cetanā-sūtra*). - Mental karma is the gravest (*Upāli-sūtra*). - The quality of mind, not material magnitude, determines merit (SĀ 1288). - True rejoicing requires *cetanā* genuinely arising; counterfeit rejoicing does not count (the *Ekottarika-āgama* counter-case of the lay-girl Muni). - Faith, arousing the aspiration, and rejoicing are three facets of one and the same *cetanā* (SĀ 659). **Upper tier (Huayan — breaking the constricted):** - No dharma arises in isolation; all dharmas arise bearing their retinue (*Tànxuán jì*). - Wherever a single dharma is raised, host and companion are immediately gathered together, layer upon layer without end (*Huányuán guān*). - Cause and effect are simultaneous; each embraces all, becoming reciprocally host and companion (*Wǔjiào zhāng*, fasc. 4). - Buddhahood at the fullness of faith is conduct-Buddha, not position-Buddha (*Wǔjiào zhāng*, fasc. 2). - At the moment of first arousing the aspirational mind, one already accomplishes perfect awakening (*Wǔjiào zhāng*, fasc. 4). **The mode of clamping:** the lower tier guarantees that the authenticity of rejoicing must be tied to *cetanā* — without a genuinely arisen *cetanā* there is no real merit; the upper tier guarantees that, once *cetanā* has genuinely arisen, the host-companion perfect-luminous structure of the dharmadhātu means that the cognitive object of this single thought is at once the dharmadhātu in its entirety, and that this single thought already possesses the full virtue of the one rejoiced in. The lower guards against the spurious; the upper breaks the constricted. ### 3.2. Why This Is Not a Mere Juxtaposition of Two Tiers The reader may object: the Āgamas say the substance of merit lies in *cetanā*; Huayan says that when *cetanā* arises it embraces the entire dharmadhātu. These look like two independent propositions — is their conjunction not a forced synthesis? It is not. They are one and the same teaching unfolded at two scales. The Āgama doctrine of *cetanā*-as-substance-of-karma is not the narrow proposition "karma's substance lies in mind." Its real content is: **the establishment of karma does not depend upon external form; it depends upon the structure of inner mental activity.** Once one accepts this content, "the structure of mental activity" must inevitably press the further question: what is the *scope* of that structure? Is it confined to a single individual's interiority, or does a wider structure obtain? The Āgamas themselves do not address this further question directly. The Āgamas' concern is individual liberation, and it suffices for them to remain at the level of "the individual *cetanā*." But once Huayan takes up the question, it presses it to its conclusion: if *cetanā* is the substance of karma, and that substance does not depend upon external form, then by what is the genuine scope of *cetanā* determined? Huayan's answer: **by the structure of the dharmadhātu itself.** Because the dharmadhātu is host-companion perfect-luminous and inexhaustibly layered, the genuine scope of *cetanā* is host-companion perfect-luminous and inexhaustibly layered. In other words, Huayan does not "add" a dharmadhātu-scale framing onto the Āgama's *cetanā*-ontology. Huayan **makes explicit a question of scope already latent within the Āgama ontology but never unfolded there.** The lower and upper tiers are not two independent layers but a single ontology stated at two scales. ### 3.3. Formal Reply to the Three Questions We can now return to the three questions raised at the outset. *To Question One — why should rejoicing constitute merit at all?* Because the substance of merit is *cetanā*, not external form. When the single thought of rejoicing genuinely brings forth *cetanā*, it falls precisely within the karmic ontology the Buddha himself defined — and within the *gravest* of the three karmas, mental karma. "There is merit" not because "something was done at the level of action" but because "something genuinely occurred at the level of *cetanā*." *To Question Two — is this not too easy?* This is the misreading of one who looks only at outward form. **True rejoicing is not easy.** The Muni counter-case in the *Ekottarika-āgama* has already established that rejoicing absent vow-and-dedication and absent genuine resonance of mental activity is denied merit-status by the Buddha himself. What is called "easy" is the conflation of "saying the words 'I rejoice'" with true rejoicing — and that very conflation is precisely what the Āgama sets out to break. Fazang's *xíngfó fēi wèifó* further guarantees that even true rejoicing is not stage-jumping presumption: one's stage remains that of an ordinary being, but one's conduct is already a buddha's. There is no contradiction here, because stage and conduct are two distinct dimensions. *To Question Three — why pair this vow with the Gate of Perfect-Luminous Host-Companion Completion?* Because that gate's defining structure is precisely "the companion at that moment already possesses the full virtue of the host." The rejoicer (companion) and the one rejoiced in (host) share substance at the level of *cetanā* and share virtue within the host-companion perfect-luminous structure of the dharmadhātu. This pairing is not the explicit text of Fazang's commentary (Fazang nowhere directly maps rejoicing in merit onto the host-companion gate); it is a conclusion compelled by Huayan's own doctrine — given that the dharmadhātu's structure is host-companion perfect luminosity, given that the substance of merit is *cetanā*, and given that the cognitive object of rejoicing is already the dharmadhātu in its entirety, the conclusion "rejoicing in merit = the cultivation-face of host-companion perfect luminosity" follows necessarily from these three premises. It is not arbitrary pairing. (The disclosure of this correspondence as an original thesis of the present author is given in §V. The full systematic argument for the ten-vows-to-ten-gates correspondence will appear in S8-P10.) --- ## IV. Position-by-Position Embracing: The Sequential and Interfused Gates The host-companion structure appears in Huayan's account of stage-sequence under two parallel registers — the **sequential gate** (*xíngbù mén* 行布門) and the **interfused gate** (*yuánróng mén* 圓融門). The present section establishes only the principle; the details of the fifty-two stages are reserved for S8-P09. **The sequential gate**: Ten Faiths, Ten Abidings, Ten Practices, Ten Dedications, Ten Grounds, Equal Awakening, Marvelous Awakening — fifty-two stages ascending in sequence, each stage distinct, none to be skipped. This is "sequential array," and viewed from this angle the structure looks like a linear ladder. **The interfused gate**: position embraces position; the prior embraces the latter, and the latter embraces the prior. The first faith-stage already embraces the marvelous-awakening stage of the Ten Grounds, and conversely. This is not "logical equivalence"; it is the actual position-by-position mutual embrace of the dharmadhātu structure. The two gates are not in contradiction; they are two observational angles upon a single dharmadhātu structure. The sequential gate views from "sequence"; the interfused gate views from "interfusion." Fazang in *Wǔjiào zhāng* fasc. 4 says explicitly: *the general and the particular are mutually complete; beginning and end are everywhere equal* — universality (interfusion) and particularity (sequence) are simultaneously complete, and beginning (first faith) and end (marvelous awakening) are mutually equal under the host-companion perfect-luminous structure. Bearing on rejoicing: the rejoicer, though stationed at the ordinary being's faith-stage from the sequential angle, in the very thought of rejoicing already possesses, from the interfused angle, the full virtue of the one rejoiced in (who may be a ground-attaining bodhisattva or even the buddhas themselves). This is neither "the ordinary being directly becoming buddha" (which would deny the sequential gate) nor "the ordinary being remaining forever an ordinary being" (which would deny the interfused gate). Both gates are simultaneously valid: one's stage remains the ordinary being's, while one's conduct-virtue is already the same as the buddhas'. This is precisely the doctrine of "fullness of faith yields entry into abiding" (信滿入住). S8-P09 will note that Sudhana's first visit on his southward pilgrimage — to the bhikṣu Meghaśrī — is mapped by Chengguan as "borrowing the position of First Abiding": after the perfection of the Ten Faiths at Mañjuśrī's place, Meghaśrī's place is already the threshold of the Ten Abidings. Under the interfused gate, this transition from "fullness of faith" to "entry into abiding" is not a "promotion" but rather "the interfused manifestation of the position." The reader who wishes to pursue this further is referred to P09. --- ## V. Middle Way Corrections **❌ Rejoicing is not cheap free-riding.** The merit of rejoicing lies not in "effortlessly receiving a share" but in "*cetanā*'s genuine resonance." Rejoicing without *cetanā* does not count (the Muni counter-case has already established this). Reading rejoicing as "applauding from the sidelines and being credited" replaces the *cetanā* ontology with a utilitarian-exchange theory and abandons both Āgama and Huayan strata at once. **True rejoicing is difficult precisely in the genuine arising of *cetanā*, not in the execution of any external act** — that is its real threshold. **❌ Rejoicing is not the reverse-emotion exercise of jealousy.** Ordinary practitioners frequently understand rejoicing as "forcing oneself to feel pleasure at another's success while suppressing jealousy." This reduces rejoicing to emotion-management. Emotion-management is work at the level of individual psychology; the rejoicing of host-companion perfect luminosity is an event at the level of dharmadhātu structure. The former aims at "I feel a little better"; the latter aims at "*cetanā* genuinely resonating with all wholesome roots throughout the dharmadhātu." Reducing the latter to the former is reading Huayan as psychology. S8-P11 has already sketched the affective face of three responses (jealousy / indifference / rejoicing) corresponding to three inner structures (separated-individual theory / unrelated-pluralism / host-companion mutual-embrace perfect teaching); the present paper supplies the doctrinal substrate from the level of dharmadhātu structure. **❌ Buddhahood at the fullness of faith is not stage-buddhahood.** Fazang's *xíngfó fēi wèifó* is the most precise doctrinal instrument for this correction. Buddhahood at the fullness of faith is the perfection of the conduct-Buddha, not the attainment of the marvelous-awakening stage. Any reading of "fullness-of-faith buddhahood" as "believe a little and be seated upon the buddha-throne" mistakes the conduct-Buddha for the position-Buddha. The danger of this misreading is that it tips into either presumption (imagining one has already become buddha) or despair (discovering one has not) — both extremes proceed from the same confusion. **The correct reading: stages are walked in sequence, while conduct-virtue is presently complete; the two do not conflict.** (This is a seed-statement, sharing its lineage with S7 teaching-danger #2.) **❌ The correspondence "Rejoicing in Merit ↔ Gate of Perfect-Luminous Host-Companion Completion" is an original thesis of the present author.** A statement of academic honesty: in the extant commentaries of Fazang and Chengguan there is no explicit text directly mapping "rejoicing in merit" onto the "Gate of Perfect-Luminous Host-Companion Completion." The present author conducted a systematic proximity search of the Huayan corpus for the proximity of "rejoicing" with "host-companion / merit," and the result was "proximate but never juxtaposed" — within the same fascicle different passages discuss the Ten Profound Gates and the Ten Dedications respectively, but no single passage joins the two directly. The correspondence proposed here is therefore **a conclusion compelled by Huayan's own doctrine**, not a citation of explicit Fazang text. The argument has been given in full in §III: host-companion perfect luminosity + the *cetanā* ontology + the dharmadhātu-scale cognitive object of the rejoicing passage in the *Samantabhadra-caryā-praṇidhāna* = the necessary clamping of rejoicing in merit with host-companion perfect luminosity. The present author advances this correspondence as an original thesis and assumes the academic responsibility it carries. The full systematic argument for the ten-vows-to-ten-gates correspondence will be developed in S8-P10 §VI, where this original thesis will receive a more systematic defense. A reader who does not accept this correspondence may still take the two-tier clamping argument of §III as standing — it is an independent doctrinal structure that does not depend upon the correspondence-thesis. The correspondence is the position-marker of this clamping within the ten-gates system, not the core of its argument. --- ## VI. Practice-Face: The Inner Structural Transformation from Jealousy to Rejoicing One hears of another's wholesome act — a friend taking up the precepts, an elder funding the construction of a stūpa, a master entering a ten-year retreat, a stranger saving lives in an earthquake. In the instant of hearing, what is the heart's first response? S8-P11 has already noted, at the affective level, that this first response has three typical forms — jealousy, indifference, rejoicing — corresponding to three entirely different inner structures. The present section, from the standpoint of the academic paper, supplies the doctrinal substrate for these three structures. **Jealousy** corresponds to **separated-individual theory**: one treats the other as competitor; the other's merit appears to diminish one's own position. This structure presupposes "merit is a finite resource: the more they have, the less I have" — a thoroughly material-quantity reading that completely abandons the Āgama *cetanā* ontology. The substance of merit is mental, not material; there is no "conservation of total quantity." Jealousy's root error is the materialization of merit. **Indifference** corresponds to **unrelated pluralism**: one treats the other as someone irrelevant to oneself; the other's merit has no bearing upon one. This structure abandons the host-companion relation and reads the dharmadhātu as a collection of atomized individuals. It does not materialize merit as jealousy does, but it strips out the dharmadhātu structure — each individual cultivates within a closed system, none touching another. Indifference's root error is the cancellation of the host-companion structure, reading Huayan as pluralist individualism. **Rejoicing** corresponds to **the perfect-teaching of host-companion mutual embrace**: one treats the other as a being who, within one and the same dharmadhātu, is reciprocally host-and-companion with oneself; when their single thought of wholesome action arises, the host-companion perfect-luminous structure ensures that one's own single thought of rejoicing already, in that very moment, possesses the full virtue of theirs. This is not the training of an emotion; it is the transformation of an inner structure — from "separated individual" into "node of a mutually-embracing dharmadhātu of host and companion." From jealousy to indifference is easy: one need only move the other outside one's circle of concern. From indifference to rejoicing is difficult: it requires drawing the other into the deeper structure of "another self within the same dharmadhātu." This "another self" is not metaphor; it is the literal realization of host-companion perfect luminosity — when one takes oneself as host, the other is companion possessing one's full virtue; when one takes the other as host, oneself is companion possessing the other's full virtue. The dualism of self and other temporarily dissolves within the genuine *cetanā*-resonance of this single thought, because from the standpoint of dharmadhātu structure "I" and "the other" were never two independent entities but two positions within a single host-companion angle. S8-P11 closes with a sketch: *In the moment of true rejoicing, the dualism of "I" and "the other" temporarily dissolves within this single thought. In this thought you are both the other (rejoicing in their merit = already possessing their merit) and still yourself (this thought is occurring within your own body-mind continuum). This double structure of "both being and still being" is the literal realization of host-companion perfect luminosity.* The doctrinal substrate of that sketch is precisely the two-tier clamping argument of §II.B and §III. P11 is the practice-entry sketch; P05 is the academic-paper unfolding; the two are intertextual. A deeper observation must also be stated: **at the moment of true rejoicing, what occurs is not merely "you obtain merit" but "the dharmadhātu, through your position, has unfolded once a structural event of host-companion perfect luminosity."** You are not the origin-point of this event; you are its locus of concretion at one position. This observation will be re-opened from another angle in S8-P06, the gate of Indra's-net realm — petitioning the dharma, rejoicing, and dedicating are all in some sense the dharmadhātu's resonance with itself, and the individual is only a node of this resonance. --- ## VII. Conclusion ### 7.1. The Two-Tier Clamping Restated The present paper has, from the canonical and treatise sources of §II, unfolded in §III the full two-tier clamping argument of "Āgama *cetanā* ontology + Huayan host-companion perfect-luminous dharmadhātu structure." By this point the reader should see that this two-tier structure is not the splicing of two independent doctrines but the same teaching stated at two scales: - **Lower tier guards against the spurious**: the substance of karma is *cetanā*, not external form. Without genuinely arisen *cetanā* there is no real merit. This lower tier ensures that rejoicing cannot be read as cheap free-riding. - **Upper tier breaks the constricted**: once *cetanā* genuinely arises within rejoicing, the dharmadhātu's own host-companion structure ensures that the cognitive object of this thought is the dharmadhātu in its entirety, and that this thought already possesses the full virtue of the one rejoiced in. This upper tier ensures that rejoicing cannot be read as private psychological exercise. Neither tier can be removed. Lower without upper narrows rejoicing to the introspection of an individual mind-moment; upper without lower turns rejoicing into undifferentiated dharmadhātu visualization that loses its anchor of authenticity. Only with both tiers in place does the doctrine of rejoicing genuinely stand. ### 7.2. The Three Questions Recovered The three opening questions, after the unfolding of §II–§VI, may now receive their final closure: *Question One — "Why should rejoicing constitute merit?"* Because the substance of merit lies in *cetanā*, not external form, and because the Buddha himself judged mental karma the gravest of the three. The single thought of true rejoicing is precisely the purest face of mental karma — *cetanā* genuinely resonating in the presence of another's wholesome act — and this thought lands directly upon the karmic ontology the Buddha himself defined, not in evasion of it. *Question Two — "Is this not too easy?"* "Easy" is the misreading of one who looks only at outward form. True rejoicing is difficult in the genuine arising of *cetanā*, not in the execution of any external action. The Muni counter-case has already set this threshold: joy without vow-and-dedication and without genuine resonance of mental activity is denied merit-status by the Buddha himself. This threshold is more interior than "the body performing a wholesome act," and harder to counterfeit — for its only witness is the practitioner's own mind in that very moment. *Question Three — "Why this correspondence with the host-companion gate?"* Because what the host-companion perfect-luminous gate prescribes is precisely the structure "the companion at that moment already possesses the full virtue of the host." Rejoicer (companion) and one rejoiced in (host) share substance at the level of *cetanā* and share virtue within the host-companion perfect-luminous dharmadhātu structure. This is not the explicit text of any extant commentary; it is the conclusion compelled from Huayan's own doctrine (see the full argument in §III and the academic-honesty disclosure at the end of §V). ### 7.3. *Conduct-Buddha Is Not Position-Buddha*: The Single Most Leveraged Concept Of all the doctrinal couplings in this paper, the single most leveraged concept is Fazang's distinction *xíngfó fēi wèifó* (§II.B 2.3). This distinction cuts cleanly through the vulgarizing danger of "buddhahood at the fullness of faith" and supplies the only doctrinal exit through which rejoicing in merit can be correctly read. At the level of stage-position, you remain an ordinary being at the faith-stage; at the level of conduct-virtue, your single thought of rejoicing is already on a par with the buddhas. Stage and conduct are two different dimensions, not two grades upon one dimension. Any reading that conflates them — whether the depressive reading "an ordinary being cannot possibly possess buddha-virtue" or the presumptuous reading "a single thought of rejoicing is already buddhahood at the level of stage" — is a misreading of conduct-Buddha as position-Buddha. The former takes conduct-virtue as a by-product of stage-attainment (no stage, no virtue); the latter takes stage as the automatic result of conduct (where there is virtue, the stage instantly follows). Both are two faces of one and the same confusion. Fazang's *xíngfó fēi wèifó* is the doctrinal weapon for cutting this confusion. Conduct-virtue is presently complete; stage-position is walked in sequence — neither in conflict, neither pulling upon the other. This distinction will bear yet greater argumentative weight in S8-P10 §VI; the present paper sets it in place in §II.B and §III. ### 7.4. The Position and Boundary of the Original Thesis §V has explicitly disclosed that "Rejoicing in Merit ↔ Gate of Perfect-Luminous Host-Companion Completion" is an original thesis of the present author, not the explicit text of Fazang's or Chengguan's commentaries. This disclosure of academic honesty merits restatement in the conclusion. The two-tier clamping argument of §III is itself an independent doctrinal structure that does not depend upon the correspondence-thesis. Even if a reader does not accept the original correspondence, §III remains a complete doctrinal account of "why rejoicing in merit holds at all." The correspondence is the position-marker of this clamping within the ten-gates system, not the core of its argument. The full systematic argument for the ten-vows-to-ten-gates correspondence will be developed in S8-P10 §VI. The present P05 only fully deploys one node of that larger structure (Vow Five × Gate Ten) as advance preparation for the hard launch of P10. A reader who provisionally suspends judgment upon the correspondence may treat it as a "preparatory thesis" awaiting P10's systematic defense; whether the correspondence is finally accepted or not, the §III argument of this paper stands independently. ### 7.5. One-Sentence Closure To gather every thread of this paper into a single sentence: **The single thought of true rejoicing is, on its ontological face, the gravest mental karma of the Āgamas, and on its structural face, the perfect-luminous host-companion completion of Huayan. The Āgamas state "why it counts"; Huayan states "to what extent it counts." The Āgamas state its authenticity; Huayan states its scope. Only when both are read together is the doctrine of rejoicing in merit genuinely complete.** If the lower tier is not secured, rejoicing collapses into free-riding; if the upper tier is not erected, rejoicing collapses into emotion-management. Only when both stand at once does the dharmadhātu, when a single thought of true rejoicing genuinely arises within someone's *cetanā*, truly open within that thought a structural event of host-companion perfect luminosity — an event that is not "some person obtaining some merit" but "the dharmadhātu, through that position, genuinely unfolding once a self-resonance of its own." The individual is the node of this resonance, not its origin. This observation of "the dharmadhātu's self-resonance" will be re-opened from another angle in the next paper. The present paper rests here. --- ## VIII. Failure Point The structural account of host-companion perfect luminosity has been carried as far as words can carry it. The remainder lies elsewhere — at the dividing line between true and counterfeit rejoicing. And that line is known only to the practitioner. The paper can say "true rejoicing requires *cetanā* genuinely arising," but whether *cetanā* in fact genuinely arises is known only to the one who is, in that very thought, present to it. This "knowing" is not reflexive ("Did I rejoice?"); it is presential — at the moment *cetanā* genuinely arises, the practitioner is *within* that *cetanā*, with no distance. The instant one asks "Was that real rejoicing?", one has already retreated from *cetanā* into reflection, and the *cetanā* in question is no longer on the scene. This is the failure point of the present paper. The paper can construct doctrinal frameworks, can exhibit the clamping of lower and upper tiers, can issue Middle Way corrections, can supply the inner-structural analysis of practice — but what the paper cannot do is judge for you whether some particular thought of yours was a true rejoicing. That judgment can occur only in the present, never as retrospective ratification, and never by another in your stead. The structure of host-companion perfect luminosity is sayable at the level of words (and the present paper has been saying it). But its real ignition at the level of *cetanā* — words can only point, never substitute. Pointing at the moon is only pointing at the moon; seeing the moon still requires that one lift one's own eyes. --- ## IX. Bridge to the Next Paper The next paper, S8-P06, treats the sixth great vow — Petitioning the Turning of the Dharma Wheel — and its correspondence with the Gate of the Realm of Indra's Net. The closing of §VI here has already laid down a bridge: petitioning, rejoicing, and dedicating are each in some sense the dharmadhātu's resonance with itself, and the individual is only a node of that resonance. S8-P06 will fully unfold the structure of "Indra's net" and will carry the principal cross-disciplinary analogy of the S8 series — the "black-hole language model." As always, every cross-disciplinary analogy will be marked ⚠️ and used only as heuristic, never reduced into the doctrine itself. The present paper closes here. --- ## Cross-Series Index - **S1-P01** (the structure of first arousing the aspirational mind): the Fazang *Wǔjiào zhāng* fasc. 4 line "at the moment of first aspiration one already accomplishes perfect awakening" cited in §II.B 2.4 directly converges with S1-P01's argument; S1 unfolds this from the face of faith's arising, the present paper from the face of rejoicing's resonance. - **S2-P04** (*Heart Sūtra*: clearly seeing the five aggregates as empty): the two-tier clamping methodology of §III parallels S2-P04's "emptiness inseparable from the conventional" — Āgama lower (authenticity) and Huayan upper (dharmadhātu structure) are analogous to the non-duality of *prajñā*-emptiness and conventional difference. - **S3 series** (the Hundred Dharmas): *cetanā* (思) is one of the five universal mental factors in *Bǎifǎ*; S3-P02 on the universals defines *cetanā* as "that which causes the mind to act," which is the same structure as the *Cetanā-sūtra* ontology of §II.A 2.1.1, viewed from the other side. - **S5-P10** (*Diamond Sūtra*: liberating innumerable beings yet no being is liberated): the host-companion structure of S5-P10 shares its source with the no-fixed-center sense of host-companion perfect luminosity in the present paper. - **S6 series** (*Śūraṅgama*): the closing of S6-P13 toward the *tathāgatagarbha*'s perfect-teaching turn rests upon the same Huayan ground as the "first-aspiration = perfect-awakening" line cited here. S7 teaching-danger #2 (the vulgarizing reading of "rapid buddhahood") shares its lineage with §II.B 2.3's *xíngfó fēi wèifó*. - **S7-P03/P07** (*Lotus*: opening-revealing-awakening-entering and the Dragon Girl's buddhahood): the Dragon Girl's "buddhahood at age eight" can be read precisely under the *xíngfó fēi wèifó* framework — what the Dragon Girl attains is conduct-buddhahood, not stage-jumping presumption. - **S8-P01** (Ocean-Seal Samādhi and the saying of the unsayable): the "bodhi universally imprints all mental activity" line in §II.A 2.2.2 is the definitional formulation of the Ocean-Seal Samādhi, fully unfolded in S8-P01 and S8-P07. - **S8-P03/P04** (Vows Three and Four): P05 shares with P03 the host-companion ground and with P04 the *xíngfó fēi wèifó* exit, differing only in which gate each enters from. - **S8-P06** (Petitioning the Dharma Wheel and Indra's-Net Realm): host-companion is the prior structure of Indra's net — two-position symmetry vs. infinite layered repetition. - **S8-P09** (Sudhana prologue): Sudhana's tower-vision in §II.B 2.7 will receive its full unfolding there. - **S8-P10** (the systematic ten-vows × ten-gates correspondence): P05 is the fully-developed advance deployment of one node; the original-thesis defense will hard-launch in P10 §VI. - **S8-P11** (the ten vows under ten windows): the affective sketch of jealousy / indifference / rejoicing in S8-P11 receives its academic substrate in §VI of the present paper. --- ## References ### Sūtras - *Madhyama-āgama* (trans. [^9]: Fazang, *Wǔjiào zhāng* T1866 fasc. 2. *Xíngfó fēi wèifó* is the precise positioning of "buddhahood at the fullness of faith" and is the core anchor shared by S8-P05 and S8-P10. [^10]: Fazang, *Wǔjiào zhāng* T1866 fasc. 4, in the section on the perfect interfusion of the Six Characteristics. "At the moment of first aspiration one already accomplishes perfect awakening" is the doctrinal convergence point of S1 and S8. [^11]: Same passage. "Each embraces all, becoming reciprocally host and companion" connects directly to the central theme of S8-P05. [^12]: Fazang, *Tànxuán jì* T1733 fasc. 1, listing of the New Ten Profound Gates, tenth gate. The transition from old to new ten-gate listings is recorded in footnote [^15]. [^13]: Chengguan, *Yǎnyì chāo* T1736 fasc. 11. The fourfold retinue (flower / person / light / dharma) is the most concrete structural display of host-companion perfect luminosity. [^14]: Fazang, *Xiū huayan àozhǐ wàngjǐn huányuán guān* T1876, sixth contemplation: "the Indra's-net contemplation of mutually-manifesting host and companion." [^15]: Jingyuan, *Jīn shīzǐ zhāng yúnjiān lèijiě* T1880 fasc. 1. The old Ten Profound Gates' ninth gate "Mind-Only Reversal Accomplishing Goodness" was changed by Fazang in the New Ten Profound Gates to "Perfect-Luminous Host-Companion Completion." This historical development is an important fact in the doctrinal history of Huayan. --- **Pointing at the Moon Research · Avataṃsaka Series · S8-P05** **Author:** Shi Huijing (釋慧鏡) **License:** This paper is released under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0). *All scriptural citations in this paper are drawn from the CBETA-collated electronic edition of the Taishō Tripiṭaka.* GitHub: pointing-at-the-moon/dharma-research YouTube: @PointingattheMoon
