A familiar account of technological change treats shared expectation as the decisive economic force: if the many come to expect that artificial intelligence will primarily destroy work rather than expand capability, the economy itself contracts; optimism is therefore the remedy, and the present mood of pessimism the core problem. That diagnosis registers a real phenomenon — public discourse saturated with anxiety about disruption — yet confuses a delayed symptom for the primary mechanism. Progress is initiated by thin minorities that sustain a concrete picture of a better configuration while the surrounding field still frames the activity as excess or threat. The majority arrives later, clothed in the friction of transition; its defensive narrative becomes the loudest voice and exerts real drag. Treating that drag as the lever leaves the generating centers untouched.

## The mood is diagnosed as the lever

The dominant public account runs roughly as follows. Economies depend on human optimism. Frame the future as larger and the conditions for abundance appear; frame it as a shrinking pie and investment hesitates, politics hardens, and measurable contraction follows. Under that prior, the present zeitgeist — irreversible displacement, zero-sum competition, irreversible loss of familiar livelihoods — is both diagnosis and site of intervention.
