A well-known cartoon depicts a student who, having completed a statistics course, no longer believes that correlation implies causation; when a companion suggests the class must have helped, the response is a hesitant "Well, maybe." That hesitation captures the fundamental asymmetry between trace and cause. The course did not author the change; the mind did, through its discrete choices to enroll, sustain attention, integrate distinctions, and test them in practice. Statistics measures the frequency with which traces align across populations, but the originating causal power that generates those traces remains entirely invisible to the aggregate.

## The hesitation locates the missing lever

The hesitation in the joke is not uncertainty about statistics; it is the instinctive refusal to commit the very category error the course was meant to cure.

Attributing the student's cognitive shift to "the class" treats an externalized curriculum as an autonomous causal agent acting directly upon a passive vessel. But a course is only structured residue: syllabus, lectures, exercises, and exams. It cannot force a distinction into existence.

What produced the transformation was a sequence of sovereign acts: the initial decision to register, the continuous discipline of directing attention, the internal resolution of confusion, and the subsequent choice to restrain hasty attributions. Statistics can record the positive correlation between course enrollment and improved reasoning scores. This compression is immensely useful as an instrument: it establishes baselines, maps environmental friction, and summarizes historical frequencies.

Yet mistaking that smoothed summary for the generative source of action is ordinary Image lag. A distribution describes what has already happened across many centers; it does not author what any individual center does next. In the very same motion, the Mind often projects that externalization outward, treating other human beings as passive pawns driven by demographic averages, economic indices, or social conditioning rather than as centers executing their own choices. The confusion of correlation with causation is an act of agency that immediately disowns its own agency. 1. **The pattern is always downstream:** Whether expressed as a regression line, an average outcome, or an institutional score, the pattern is residual data left by prior movement.
2. **The causal prior never relocates:** The labor of selecting, interpreting, evaluating, and applying remains anchored at the minded center.
3. **Data informs, but cannot steer:** Statistical knowledge enriches the landscape of available priors, but the data never walks the terrain.
