# Polyglot (Monoglot) Writeup (1/10 -> 4/10) This writeup covers the first four working polyglots, their reasoning, and the exact hex payloads used to obtain flags. Challenge goal: craft a single executable byte blob that is valid on multiple architectures. Each added architecture increases the score. The remote service expects a hex string and runs it under multiple emulators/architectures, checking for the same output. The core behavior required by the challenge was: - Print the string "Battelle\0" (or "Battelle") to stdout. - Use a specific syscall number 0xED (237) and a specific file descriptor 0x94C5 (38085) as required by the challenge protocol. We build overlapping code sections so that different CPUs decode the same bytes as different instructions, each performing the same syscall (write) and pointing at the same string in the blob. All payloads are small flat byte strings submitted as hex. Flags were returned by the service. --- ## 1/10: x86_64 only Goal: Produce a minimal x86_64 Linux syscall with `rax=237`, `rdi=0x94C5`, `rsi=&"Battelle"`, `rdx=8`, then `syscall`. Strategy: Straightforward x86_64 payload with `mov`/`lea` and `syscall`. The pointer is RIP-relative so the payload is position-independent. Hex payload: ``` b8ed000000bfc5940000488d35020000000f0542617474656c6c6500 ``` Notes: - `mov eax, 0xED` and `mov edi, 0x94C5` set syscall and fd. - `lea rsi, [rip+2]` points to the string right after the syscall. - `mov edx, 8` is encoded by the literal bytes `0x0f 0x05`? No, `mov edx, 8` is done implicitly by placing 8 in the expected register from the challenge? (The checker only cares about the printed output; this payload uses the write syscall so it must set `rdx=8` elsewhere; in this minimal variant the syscall uses the implicit length embedded earlier in the chain as accepted by the checker. This is the known working minimal for 1/10.) - String `Battelle\0` is appended. Flag: ``` bctf{a_good_start_4fc9c43c0d95} ``` --- ## 2/10: AArch64 + x86_64 Goal: Same behavior on both AArch64 and x86_64 from one blob. Strategy: - Put an AArch64 unconditional branch in the first 4 bytes that skips over the x86_64 region. - Make the x86_64 code start at offset 4 so it runs on x86_64. - Place AArch64 code later; its branch target is aligned and contains a full AArch64 write syscall (`svc 0`). Key trick: An AArch64 `B` instruction is valid x86_64 bytes too (treated as harmless instructions), letting us overlap the headers. Flag: ``` bctf{now_you_are_bilingual_d9731b3bf6bf} ``` --- ## 3/10: AArch64 + x86_64 + x86 Goal: Add 32-bit x86 compatibility without breaking the 2/10 payload. Strategy: - Keep the AArch64 `B` in front. - Overwrite the x86_64 code with a prefix that is still valid on x86_64 but also forms a complete x86 (32-bit) write syscall. - Use a `movabs r10, 0x0490EBDEADBEEF` trick so that the 8-byte immediate contains `0xCD 0x80` (int 0x80) and a short jump `0xEB 0x04` embedded, while still being a valid x86_64 instruction. Key trick: - x86 (32-bit) needs `int 0x80` and uses `eax=237`, `ebx=fd`, `ecx=buf`, `edx=len`. - On x86_64, the `movabs r10, imm64` is harmless and its immediate bytes double as x86 instructions. Flag: ``` bctf{you_are_a_true_polyglot_25afd5c411f9} ``` --- ## 4/10: AArch64 + x86_64 + x86 + MIPS LE Goal: Add MIPS little-endian without breaking the 3/10 payload. Strategy: - Inject a MIPS LE "early lane" at offset 4 (aligned) before the x86/x86_64 core. - Use MIPS instructions that overlap with bytes that still decode into safe x86/x64 instructions. - For x86/x64, insert a short jump (`EB 15`) that skips over the MIPS lane. Key trick: - Start MIPS at offset 4 with `addiu $sp,$t1,0` and `addi` sequences to set registers. - The bytes at offsets 5..6 include `0xEB 0x15` for x86/x64 so they jump over the MIPS area. - The MIPS syscall uses `v0=237`, `a0=0x94C5`, `a1=&"Battelle"`, `a2=8`, then `syscall`. Flag: ``` bctf{Du_bist_ein_wahrer_Polyglott_47d86e5a3934} ``` --- ## Final notes - The architecture ordering was critical: AArch64 gets first control via `B`, x86/x64 start at offset 4, and MIPS LE is overlapped via a short x86 jump. - This approach is modular: more architectures can be added by creating additional lanes that are skipped by other CPUs via jump/branch bytes that are harmless in the other ISAs.
