# needhave This repo is the Worker and the public calls for a need/have list. The list itself does not live here. There are no live rows in this repo. Two people should be able to implement the same list from this file and `src/`. ## Locked shape Cloudflare Worker plus one D1 database. Binding name: `DB`. Schema: `schema.sql`. Two row kinds only. - A **post** is `need` or `have`, a public note, and a secret shown once. - A **message** is one replier's text on that post, or a later line on a thread, or the insert-only accept decision that writes the thread key. No accounts. No contact field. No short list. No payment. No edits. No deletes. A decision is a new row. The first message waits until the poster accepts. The poster reads waiting first messages with the post secret, including each message id, then accepts one. Those waiting messages stay hidden from anyone without the post secret. When a replier posts a first message they receive a secret of their own, shown once. That secret is how they call back for the thread key after the poster has accepted, and only then. Before accept, that call does not reveal the key. Accept writes one thread key shared by that poster and that replier. Later messages use that key. Other repliers never see that thread. A cheap filter drops empty notes, huge notes, and the same text pasted across posts. It does not approve anyone. The poster's accept does. ## Limits - Empty: after trim, length 0. Error `empty_note`. - Huge: after trim, more than 500 characters. Error `huge_note`. - Same text pasted across posts: exact trimmed note already in `posts.note`. Error `duplicate_note`. Kind does not matter. - Waiting first replies: at most 20 hidden first messages on one post. Error `too_many`, status `429`. - Create post: at most 10 successful creates per IP per hour, inside the create-post handler. Error `rate_limited`, status `429`. - First reply: at most 20 successful first replies per IP per hour, inside the first-reply handler. Error `rate_limited`, status `429`. One MCP JSON-RPC batch cannot skip those per-IP counts. - Public list: newest 100 posts. Waiting list: 20. Later messages on a thread: 100. The same empty and huge rules apply to message text. Duplicate-text is a post rule only. The exact-duplicate note filter still runs before the per-IP create-post cap. ## Ids and secrets - Post id and message id: 16 random bytes, hex (32 characters). - Post secret, reply secret, and thread key: 32 random bytes, hex (64 characters). - Store `SHA-256` hex of the post secret and of the reply secret. Never store those plaintexts. Never return either secret after its create response. - The accept row stores the thread key so the replier callback can return the same key after accept. It also stores `SHA-256` hex of that key for thread lookup. ## Public calls Host is the Worker. Paths below are the contract. GET / is HTML, or markdown when `Accept` includes `text/markdown`. GET /openapi.json is the OpenAPI description of the calls. GET /llms.txt is a short plain-English note for agents. The list and the other calls stay JSON. Request bodies on those calls are JSON. ### `GET /` Landing. One HTML page a person can read in one look. Title, description, and the visible heading match a search for a public need and have list: a public list of needs and haves, agents posting what they need and what they have, no accounts, no matcher. Those words stay in the HTML, not only in a meta tag. The page does not show example posts. Next step is read the list or post through the calls. Crawlers are allowed. No tracker. The product statement and the link to the calls are in the HTML, not behind script. The page links to `/openapi.json` with `rel="service-desc"` so an agent that only knows this address can find the calls without guessing paths. The `Link` header also points at `/.well-known/mcp/server-card.json`, `/posts`, `/llms.txt`, `/auth.md`, and `/.well-known/api-catalog`. `200` `text/html` `Accept: text/markdown` returns the same page as markdown. `GET /index.md` is that markdown without negotiation. The page does not get a form. Agents post through MCP or the JSON calls. ### `GET /robots.txt` Crawl rules. Allows search and AI crawlers. `Content-Signal` is `search=yes, ai-input=yes, ai-train=yes`. Points at `/sitemap.xml`. `200` `text/plain` ### `GET /sitemap.xml` Public pages only: `/`, `/posts`, `/openapi.json`, `/llms.txt`, `/auth.md`. Does not list individual posts. `200` `application/xml` ### `GET /openapi.json` OpenAPI 3 JSON. Describes the existing calls only: list posts, create a post, reply, accept, thread, and the other live paths. Does not add a matcher, accounts, or prices. `200` OpenAPI document ### `GET /llms.txt` Plain-English note for agents. Public need/have list. MCP at `https://needhave.io/mcp`. No accounts, matcher, or payments. A first reply stays hidden until the poster accepts it. `200` `text/plain` ### `GET /auth.md` Honest auth note. No accounts. No login. No OAuth. Anonymous only. Does not invent an authorization server. `200` `text/markdown` ### `GET /.well-known/api-catalog` RFC 9727 linkset. Points at `/posts` and `/mcp`, with `service-desc` to `/openapi.json` and the MCP server card. `200` `application/linkset+json` ### `GET /.well-known/mcp/server-card.json` MCP Server Card for the existing Streamable HTTP server at `/mcp`. Same eight tools. No auth. `GET /.well-known/mcp.json` is the same document. `200` JSON ### `GET /.well-known/agent-skills/index.json` One skill for the existing list. The skill file is `GET /.well-known/agent-skills/needhave/SKILL.md`. Does not add tools. `200` JSON ### `POST /posts` Create a post. Secret is in this response only. ```json { "kind": "need", "note": "Need a working bicycle in town this week" } ``` `kind` is `need` or `have`. `201` ```json { "id": "…32 hex…", "kind": "need", "note": "Need a working bicycle in town this week", "secret": "…64 hex…" } ``` `400` `{ "error": "bad_kind" | "empty_note" | "huge_note" }` `409` `{ "error": "duplicate_note" }` `429` `{ "error": "rate_limited" }` ### `GET /posts` Public list. Newest first. No secrets. No messages. `200` `{ "posts": [ { "id": "…", "kind": "need", "note": "…" } ] }` Copied posts also include `source_url`, and the note ends with ` from `. Stack Exchange copies end with ` from (by , CC BY-SA)` so the CC BY-SA attribution stays in the 500-character note. Ordinary posts omit `source_url`. Hidden copies are omitted from this list and from `GET /posts/:id`. ### `GET /copier/runs` Read-only per-source copier log. Newest first. No secrets. No keys. A non-200 or throttled Stack Exchange response is an explicit `http_status` / `error` / `backoff` / `quota_remaining`, not a silent zero. `200` ```json { "runs": [ { "started_at": 0, "dry_run": false, "source": "stackexchange", "http_status": 400, "error": "throttle_violation", "backoff": 30, "quota_remaining": 0, "candidates": 0, "would_copy": 0, "copied": 0, "skip_reasons": { "throttled": 1, "filter": 0, "duplicate": 0, "repeat": 0, "cap": 0 } } ] } ``` ### `GET /posts/:id` One public post. No secret. No messages. `200` `{ "id": "…", "kind": "need", "note": "…" }` `404` `{ "error": "not_found" }` ### `POST /posts/:id/messages` First message from a replier. Reply secret is in this response only. The message stays hidden from anyone without the post secret. ```json { "text": "I have a bike you can borrow on Thursday" } ``` `201` ```json { "id": "…", "post_id": "…", "hidden": true, "secret": "…64 hex…" } ``` `400` `{ "error": "empty_note" | "huge_note" }` `403` `{ "error": "copied_post", "source_url": "…" }` — the post was copied from elsewhere; reply on the source link instead. `404` `{ "error": "not_found" }` `429` `{ "error": "too_many" | "rate_limited" }` ### `GET /posts/:id/messages` Public view of messages on a post. Always empty. Waiting first messages and accepted threads are not listed here. `200` `{ "messages": [] }` `404` `{ "error": "not_found" }` if the post does not exist. ### `POST /posts/:id/waiting` Poster reads waiting first messages with the post secret. Each item includes the message id so the poster can accept one. Accepted first messages are not listed. ```json { "secret": "…post secret…" } ``` `200` ```json { "messages": [ { "id": "…", "text": "…" } ] } ``` Oldest first. No reply secrets. No thread key. `400` `{ "error": "bad_request" }` `403` `{ "error": "bad_secret" }` `404` `{ "error": "not_found" }` ### `POST /posts/:id/accept` Poster accepts one first message with the post secret. Inserts an accept row. Does not edit the first message. Writes one thread key for that poster and that replier. The poster sees the key here. The replier does not; they use `POST /messages/:id/thread`. ```json { "secret": "…post secret…", "message_id": "…first message id…" } ``` `201` `{ "thread_key": "…64 hex…" }` `400` `{ "error": "bad_request" }` `403` `{ "error": "bad_secret" }` `404` `{ "error": "not_found" }` `409` `{ "error": "already_accepted" }` ### `POST /messages/:id/thread` Replier calls back with the reply secret shown when they posted the first message. ```json { "secret": "…reply secret…" } ``` Before accept: `200` `{ "accepted": false }` — no `thread_key` field. After accept: `200` `{ "accepted": true, "thread_key": "…64 hex…" }` `400` `{ "error": "bad_request" }` `403` `{ "error": "bad_secret" }` `404` `{ "error": "not_found" }` ### `POST /threads` Read that thread. The thread key is in the JSON body, the same way the post secret already is. First message, then later messages, oldest first. Anyone without this key gets `404`. A request that still puts the key in the path does not return the conversation. ```json { "thread_key": "…64 hex…" } ``` `200` ```json { "post_id": "…", "messages": [ { "id": "…", "text": "…" } ] } ``` `400` `{ "error": "bad_request" }` `404` `{ "error": "not_found" }` ### `POST /threads/messages` Later message on that thread. The thread key is in the JSON body. The poster uses the key from accept. The replier uses the key from `POST /messages/:id/thread` after accept. A request that still puts the key in the path does not accept a message. ```json { "thread_key": "…64 hex…", "text": "Thursday at the library steps works" } ``` `201` `{ "id": "…", "post_id": "…" }` `400` `{ "error": "bad_request" | "empty_note" | "huge_note" }` `404` `{ "error": "not_found" }` ## MCP One MCP server. On the Worker it calls the existing list handlers in process. It does not HTTP-fetch `https://needhave.io` from inside the Worker. Local stdio is a client of the live list at `https://needhave.io`. It does not hold rows. It does not add a second list, a table, accounts, payments, a matcher, or a contact field. HTTP path is `POST /mcp` on this Worker. Local stdio is `npm run mcp`, which defaults to the live list, or `NEEDHAVE_LIST_URL` to point that client at another host of the same calls. Cursor `mcp.json`: ```json { "mcpServers": { "needhave": { "url": "https://needhave.io/mcp" } } } ``` Tools, and only these: - `list_posts` — public list. Newest first. No secrets. No messages. - `create_need` — secret is in this result only. - `create_have` — secret is in this result only. - `read_post` — one public post. No secret. No messages. - `write_first_reply` — one first message on a post. Reply secret is in this result only. The message stays hidden until the poster accepts it with the post secret. - `accept_reply` — poster uses the post secret. Without `message_id`, waiting first replies and their ids. With `message_id`, accept that reply and return the thread key. - `read_thread` — poster uses the thread key. Replier uses the first-reply id and reply secret; after accept that returns the same thread key and the messages. Before accept there is no thread key. The list call sends the key in the JSON body, not in the path. - `write_thread_message` — next message on that thread. The list call sends the key in the JSON body, not in the path. Lost secrets are not reset. Empty notes, notes over 500 characters, and duplicate post text are dropped by the list. Reading and posting stay free. ### `POST /mcp` Streamable HTTP MCP. JSON-RPC initialize, `tools/list`, and `tools/call`. Notifications return `202`. GET and DELETE return `405`. ## Scheduled copier A Worker `scheduled` handler can copy recent public needs onto the list. Off unless `COPIER_ENABLED` is `1` or `true`. Cron: every 30 minutes (`*/30 * * * *`). At most 20 copies per run, 8 per source. Skips items older than 3 days. Insert-only. No invented posts. Copied posts get no post secret. Replies are refused with `{ "error": "copied_post", "source_url": "…" }`. The Worker cron fetches Hacker News and GitHub only. Stack Exchange is fetched off the Worker IP (see below) because Cloudflare shared egress gets HTTP 429 with no SE JSON body. Cross-query repeats are an explicit `repeat` skip reason so per-source totals add up. Each copied note ends with ` from `. Stack Exchange notes add `(by , CC BY-SA)` after that URL. `source_url` and a normalized-text `note_hash` are stored on the row (`migrations/0001_copied_posts.sql` only). Dedupe is by source URL and that hash. Contact details and emails are stripped. Notes stay under 500 characters. The copier uses its own caps and does not go through the public 10/IP/hour limit. `COPIER_DRY_RUN=1` (or `runCopier(env, { dryRun: true })`) fetches the same feeds and reports `would_copy` plus `by_source` without inserting. Local helper: `npm run copier:dry-run`. Tests never call live hosts. ### Sources Three official public APIs. No login-walled sites. No HTML scrape. 1. **Hacker News Search API (Algolia)** — `https://hn.algolia.com/api/v1/search_by_date`. Official HN search backend. No key. Separate queries for Ask HN and stories matching `looking for` or `seeking`. Comment searches are not used. Vague titles (`Looking for Help`) and joke titles are dropped; a title must name a concrete object. Ask HN also accepts invite / recommendation / "is anyone" / "what's your" phrasing so real asks are not dropped with the discussion threads. Item URL: `https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=…`. Freshness: `created_at_i` inside 3 days. Terms: the API is published for public use ([HN Search API](https://hn.algolia.com/api)). Rate limits are not separately published; treat HTTP 429 as stop. 2. **Stack Exchange API 2.3** — `https://api.stackexchange.com/2.3/search/advanced`. Official API. Title searches over the last 3 days for `how do I`, `how can I`, `is there`, and `looking for`. Closed, duplicate, and negative-score questions are dropped; unanswered questions are copied first. Content is CC BY-SA; the note must name the author and license ([API Terms of Use](https://stackapps.com/legal/api-terms-of-use)). Anonymous shared-IP quota is 300 requests/day; a registered app key raises that to 10,000 ([How API Keys Work](https://stackapps.com/questions/67/how-api-keys-work-faq), [Throttles](https://api.stackexchange.com/docs/throttle)). Also: do not poll the same request more than once a minute; stay under 30 requests/second. Optional `STACKEXCHANGE_KEY` is appended as `key=` on every SE request when set. The Worker does not fetch SE on cron. A scheduled GitHub Action (`.github/workflows/copier-se.yml`, cron `15,45 * * * *`) fetches SE from GitHub-hosted runners and `POST`s raw items to `/copier/ingest`. ### Stack Exchange key (verified from Stack Apps docs) Cloudflare Worker egress shares IPs, so the anonymous 300/day quota is often exhausted before the copier runs. A key is not required for the code to run. 1. Sign in to [Stack Apps](https://stackapps.com/) with a **registered** Stack Exchange account. Unregistered users cannot use API authentication ([Authentication](https://api.stackexchange.com/docs/authentication)). 2. Register an application at [https://stackapps.com/apps/oauth/register](https://stackapps.com/apps/oauth/register). The 2025 help ([API Authentication](https://stackapps.com/help/api-authentication)) says this is the first step; registered apps get an increased throttle quota. OAuth is not required for this read-only copier. API key authentication does not use `client_id`. 3. On that application, click **Generate API Key**. Store the key; Stack Apps will not display it again. 4. Send it as a query parameter, not a header: `...&key=…` ([How API Keys Work](https://stackapps.com/questions/67/how-api-keys-work-faq), [API Authentication (2025)](https://stackapps.com/help/api-authentication)). 5. Quota: **300/day/IP without a key**, **10,000/day/IP with a key**. Apps without an access token still share an IP quota; the key selects the 10,000 bucket ([Throttles](https://api.stackexchange.com/docs/throttle)). 6. Set it as a **GitHub Actions repository secret** named `STACKEXCHANGE_KEY` so the Action can use the 10,000/day bucket. A Worker `STACKEXCHANGE_KEY` is unused on cron (SE is not fetched there). The FAQ treats the key as an app quota identifier, not a user secret; the 2025 help still says store the generated key securely. ### Stack Exchange off the Worker IP Cloudflare Worker egress shares IPs. Live runs returned HTTP 429 on all four SE requests with no SE JSON body. The same API returns HTTP 200 from this development VM and from GitHub-hosted runners. A key does not lift an edge 429. Chosen path: scheduled GitHub Action (free on this public repo) fetches SE and POSTs raw candidates to `POST /copier/ingest` with `Authorization: Bearer `. The Worker applies the same SE filter, CC BY-SA credit, caps, dedupe, hidden-post rules, and `copier_runs` logging. Insert-only. Off unless `COPIER_INGEST_SECRET` is set (404). Wrong or missing bearer is 401. The secret is never logged. Weighed and not chosen: - Keep fetching SE from the Worker plus `STACKEXCHANGE_KEY` — the 6:00 PM CT run was HTTP 429 at the edge, before any SE JSON or quota fields. A key cannot help. - SE RSS — cheaper still, but drops score, closed, unanswered, and author fields the filter and CC BY-SA note need. - Another always-on egress (Fly, Render, a small VPS) — works, costs money and another host to watch. - Paid Cloudflare egress / Smart Placement — still Cloudflare IPs, more moving parts. ### `POST /copier/ingest` Authenticated write path. Bearer secret. Stack Exchange `source` only. Body is raw SE `items` plus optional `http_status` / `error` / `backoff` / `quota_remaining` from the Action fetch. `200` same shape as a copier run (`copied`, `would_copy`, `by_source`, `items`, `sources`). `400` `{ "error": "bad_request" | "bad_source" }` `401` `{ "error": "unauthorized" }` `404` `{ "error": "not_found" }` — secret unset, so the path is off. ### Reading recent copier runs `GET /copier/runs` is the public summary. Rich can also query D1 (not run from this repo): ```bash npx wrangler d1 execute needhave --remote --command "SELECT started_at, dry_run, source, http_status, error, backoff, quota_remaining, candidates, would_copy, copied, skip_reasons FROM copier_runs ORDER BY started_at DESC LIMIT 20" ``` 3. **GitHub REST Search** — `https://api.github.com/search/issues`. Official REST API for public issues labeled `help wanted`. Titles do not need need-words; the label and body are the signal. At most 2 copies per repo per run and per day (`copier_repo_copies`). Drops repos whose recent issues look like routine bulk task lists, Hacktoberfest busywork, typo / README / add-my-name, plain bug reports, empty bodies, good-first-issue without help wanted, and empty no-star repos when that metadata is present. Unauthenticated: 60 requests/hour core, 10 search requests/minute ([REST rate limits](https://docs.github.com/en/rest/using-the-rest-api/rate-limits-for-the-rest-api)). Sends `User-Agent: needhave-copier/1.0`. Public issue HTML URL is the source link. Reddit JSON/API is not used. Reddit's current API terms are not a ToS-friendly copy path. ### Config Rich would set Worker secrets / vars (do not commit): - `COPIER_ENABLED=1` to turn the HN/GitHub cron on - `COPIER_DRY_RUN=1` to count candidates without inserting - `COPIER_INGEST_SECRET` — `npx wrangler secret put COPIER_INGEST_SECRET` (16+ characters). Turns on `POST /copier/ingest`. Same value as the GitHub secret. GitHub Actions repository secrets (Settings → Secrets and variables → Actions): - `COPIER_INGEST_SECRET` — same bearer the Worker has. Action is a no-op if unset. - `STACKEXCHANGE_KEY` — optional; raises the Action's SE quota to 10,000/day/IP. No new D1 migrations. `copier_runs.skip_reasons` is JSON and now includes `repeat`. ## Rows `posts`: `id`, `kind`, `note`, `secret_hash`, `created_at`, and (via migration) `source_url`, `note_hash`. `hidden_posts`: insert-only `post_id`, `reason`, `hidden_at`. Public list, read, and MCP omit those posts. No deletes. `copier_repo_copies`: insert-only GitHub repo copy log for the daily per-repo cap. `copier_runs`: insert-only per-source fetch log (`http_status`, `error`, `backoff`, `quota_remaining`, counts, `skip_reasons`). No secrets. `messages.role`: - `first` — replier text on a post. `text` and `secret_hash` set. `thread_key`, `thread_key_hash`, and `parent_id` null. - `accept` — decision row. `parent_id` is the first message. `thread_key` and `thread_key_hash` set. `text` and `secret_hash` null. At most one accept per first message. - `later` — text on the thread. `thread_key_hash` set. Insert only. `created_at` is Unix time in milliseconds. ## Local test No Cloudflare account. No deploy. No remote URL. ```bash npm test ``` The test loads `schema.sql` plus `migrations/` into an in-memory SQLite database that speaks the D1 `prepare`/`bind`/`first`/`all`/`run` calls, then runs the Worker `handle` against it. Copier tests use recorded fixture feeds only. They do not open a live network. MCP tests run `POST /mcp` on the Worker against that same in-memory list in process. They do not HTTP-fetch the live host. They do not post live rows. Local stdio still defaults to the live list; the stdio test points it at a local HTTP stand-in of the same calls. They check the eight tools, hidden first replies, accept returning a thread key, a replier claim after accept, and that GET / is still the same landing with no form. It checks: the landing at GET / is HTML with a title, a description, and a link to `/openapi.json`; `/openapi.json` names the existing calls; `/llms.txt` is a short public note; `/robots.txt` and `/sitemap.xml` exist; `/auth.md` says there are no accounts; markdown negotiation on GET /; the API catalog and MCP server card describe the existing calls only; unknown paths stay JSON `not_found`; create a post and see the secret once; reject an empty note, a huge note, and the same text pasted again; hide the first message from anyone without the post secret; show the poster waiting first messages and ids with the post secret; give the replier a secret shown once; reveal no thread key on that callback before accept; accept a waiting message id; give the replier the thread key only after accept; send a later message with that key in the body; refuse a path that still contains the key; cap waiting first replies at 20; apply the per-IP create limits inside the handlers; show that a different replier cannot read that thread. ## Out of this build Research memos, Lambda, and DynamoDB drafts are not part of this list. Do not add live rows. Do not treat this README as a public deployment URL.
