# The Continuum and the Axiom of Choice in [QLF](README.md) Standard physics inherits two foundational assumptions from classical mathematics that QLF explicitly rejects: 1. **The continuum** — that space, time, and fields are modelled by the real numbers ℝ, a completed infinite totality 2. **The Axiom of Choice** — that for any collection of non-empty sets, a simultaneous choice function exists, even when no rule for constructing it is given Both assumptions are pragmatically useful for classical mechanics and general relativity. Both become physically and logically problematic at the quantum scale. QLF provides a constructive alternative to each — but first, the indictment. **The point is not that the continuum is "false."** `ℝ` is a *consistent* structure, and consistency was never the question — you cannot derive a contradiction from a consistent object, and trying to is a category error (and reads as crank). The sharper, harder-to-dodge claim is two-pronged: the continuum is **consistent but physically unrealizable**, and it **gives demonstrably wrong answers** wherever it is forced onto reality. This section makes that case; §1–§6 then give the constructive alternative. --- ## The continuum gives wrong answers In every case below the continuum produces an answer that is **flatly wrong** — almost always **infinite or absurd** — and the discrete substrate produces the measured value. The wrongness is not random: it appears precisely where the continuum's distinctive content (a *continuum* of degrees of freedom, an actual infinity) is invoked. | Phenomenon | Continuum answer | Discrete (QLF) answer | Verdict | |---|---|---|---| | **Blackbody radiation** (the original *ultraviolet catastrophe*) | **infinite** energy — a continuum of modes each `½kT`, Rayleigh–Jeans diverges | Planck's law — energy **quantized**; finite | Continuum wrong; **discreteness founded QM** | | **Vacuum energy** (the *cosmological-constant catastrophe*) | **~10¹²²×** the observed value — `½ℏω` over a continuum of modes | `Ω_Λ = log 2`, **1.2%** ([`QLF_CosmologicalConstant`](lean/QLF_CosmologicalConstant.lean), [`VacuumEnergy.md`](VacuumEnergy.md)) | Worst prediction in physics; discrete is right | | **Spacetime singularities** (black-hole centre, Big Bang) | **infinite** curvature/density | singularity-free by construction — discrete events + Pauli-bounded density ([`Curvature.md`](Curvature.md), [`BLACK-HOLES.md`](BLACK-HOLES.md)) | Continuum → ∞; discrete → finite | | **QED/QFT loop self-energies** | **infinite** (UV divergences) | finite — the discrete Planck floor cuts the running off (§3.1; [`QLF_PlanckScale`](lean/QLF_PlanckScale.lean)) | Bare continuum answer is wrong (∞) | The pattern is exact: **integrate over a continuum and you get a divergence — a wrong, infinite answer.** Quantize (discretize) and you get the finite measured value. Planck's 1900 fix was the first instance; the vacuum catastrophe is the same disease at cosmological scale; GR singularities are the same disease in geometry. The continuum is not occasionally wrong — it is *systematically* wrong wherever it is taken literally. ### The kicker: every continuum *success* is smuggled-in discreteness The standard rebuttal is immediate: *"but renormalized QED gives `g−2` to twelve digits, and GR nails Mercury's perihelion — the continuum works."* True, and here is the decisive answer: **the continuum gets the right answer only after it is regularized — only after a cutoff is put back in.** A cutoff is a smallest length / largest frequency — it *is* the discrete floor, reintroduced by hand. Renormalization is the continuum **borrowing discreteness to repair its own infinite answers**, then declaring victory. The triumphs of "continuum physics" are exactly the calculations in which the continuum is *not actually being a continuum*. QLF makes the borrowed cutoff explicit and intrinsic (the Planck closure floor, §3.1), so the divergences never arise. The QFT face of this is [QFT_QLF.md](QFT_QLF.md) §4–6. --- ## Consistency is not realizability — and that was always the question The usual defense of the continuum — *"it is consistent, you cannot disprove it"* — is true and **irrelevant**, and the trap is to argue on its terms. **Consistency buys nothing.** By Gödel's completeness theorem a consistent theory is guaranteed a model — but an **abstract, set-theoretic** model, never a physical one. One can write endless consistent theories that describe nothing realizable: non-standard arithmetic (consistent, with actually-infinite integers — by Löwenheim–Skolem there are models of every infinite cardinality), a theory positing a halting oracle, infinitesimals, Banach–Tarski decompositions. All consistent; none realized. *Consistency ⟺ "has an abstract model" — it says exactly nothing about whether nature instantiates the structure.* **"Can't be disproven in the reals" is circular.** Asking whether `ℝ` is false *within* `ℝ`-based mathematics assumes the thing being judged; a consistent system self-certifies, which is the *definition* of consistency, not evidence for it. The verdict on realization comes from **outside** the continuum's own deductive closure — from physics and computability. So the real question was never *consistency* (which the continuum shares with every consistent fiction) but **realizability** — and the continuum is consistent but **physically unrealizable**, demonstrably, from accepted physics: - **Bekenstein bound** — a finite region holds **finite** information; a continuum needs uncountably many distinguishable states (an actual infinity of information) in a bounded region. Finite-information physics **cannot instantiate** it. Not "unrealized as it happens" — *forbidden*. - **Gisin** — a single real carries infinite information; no physical quantity can. This obstruction is **machine-checked** ([`lean/QLF_Realizability.lean`](lean/QLF_Realizability.lean)): with the Bekenstein bound as the physical premise (a region's distinguishable states form a *finite* type) and a faithful realization modeled as an injection, `no_continuum_in_finite_region` proves there is **no injection from an infinite state space into a finite one** — so a continuum cannot be realized in a finite-information region. The proof uses only the continuum's *infinitude*, never any claim that `ℝ` is inconsistent. The burden therefore sits entirely on the continuum's defender to **exhibit a physical realization** — which finiteness forbids. We are not disproving `ℝ`; we are observing it has **no physical model**, and that consistency is no substitute. **The wrong answers above are the *symptom*:** force an unrealizable structure onto reality and it returns an infinity exactly where the unrealizable content (a continuum of modes) is summed. **And the unit of that finite information is itself discrete and machine-verified — which is *why* finiteness bites.** The Bekenstein/Gisin argument turns on information being **quantized**: a finite region holds finitely many distinctions because each distinction is a whole *bit*, not an infinitely-divisible sliver. QLF grounds the quantum — the unit of information is the two-valued **spin-½ closure**, carrying exactly one bit (`binary_kl 1 (1/2) = log 2`) while a single-valued object carries none (`binary_kl 1 1 = 0`) — machine-checked, the `2π` double-valuedness reproven from the explicit rotation matrices, grounding the spinor **Cartan** discovered in 1913 ([`lean/QLF_SpinorInformation.lean`](lean/QLF_SpinorInformation.lean)). So information is **atomic** — one bit per half-spin — which is precisely why a bounded region holds a *finite* number of distinctions, and why the continuum's infinitely-divisible information (uncountably many distinguishable states packed into a bounded region) is the unrealizable thing. The discrete bit is not a modeling choice; it is what the substrate's minimal closure *is*. **Backed by the structural counts.** Beyond unrealizability, the continuum-as-completed-actual-infinity is *gratuitous*: its cardinality is **underdetermined** (the Continuum Hypothesis is independent of ZFC — Cohen 1963), almost all of its members are **unnameable** (the computable and definable reals are countable; almost every real is uncomputable — Turing, Chaitin's `Ω`), it is **unneeded** (reverse mathematics: applicable analysis lives in `RCA₀`/`WKL₀`/`ACA₀`, §below), and it is **pathological** (Banach–Tarski, §2). Every distinctive thing it adds is unnameable, unmeasurable, or pathological. ### The continuum is gratuitous — five converging strikes The case is not one argument but five independent ones, each striking from a different side. **Three are classical results of mathematical logic** — the ones that, by the 1970s, had already taken the continuum-as-determinate-object apart: 1. **The transfinite has a countable handle (Löwenheim–Skolem, 1915–1920).** Any first-order theory — even ZFC, even "the theory of the uncountable reals" — has a **countable model** (the Skolem paradox). The whole transfinite continuum can be carried inside a countable, effectively finite-description model. *There is a finite/countable solution to the infinite and transfinite.* 2. **Its size is undecidable (Gödel 1940 + Cohen's forcing 1963).** Gödel showed `CH` consistent with ZFC; Cohen, building forcing extensions over Löwenheim–Skolem **countable transitive models**, showed `¬CH` consistent — so the **cardinality of the continuum is independent of ZFC**: `2^ℵ₀` can be forced to almost any value our axioms permit. The continuum is **not a determinate object** — the nail in the coffin. 3. **It proves no new finitary theorem (reverse-mathematics conservativity, Friedman/Harrington, 1970s).** The infinitary "continuum" subsystem **`WKL₀`** — strong enough for a large swath of classical analysis (compactness, Heine–Borel, the standard existence theorems) — is **conservative over the finitary base for finitary (`Π⁰₂`) statements**: it proves *nothing* finitary that the finite/computable base does not already prove (see Simpson, *SOSOA*). Hilbert's program, vindicated for that fragment: the continuum apparatus is **gratuitous** for the content that has finitary meaning. **QLF adds two more — machine-checked — and supplies the replacement:** 4. **It is physically unrealizable** (`no_continuum_in_finite_region`, `real_continuum_not_realizable`, [`lean/QLF_Realizability.lean`](lean/QLF_Realizability.lean)): no injection of an infinite state space into a finite-information region (Bekenstein). *Consistency ≠ realizability.* 5. **It is constructively unneeded** (`closure_census`/`returnDensity` in [`lean/QLF_PhysicalPi.lean`](lean/QLF_PhysicalPi.lean); `aperySum` in [`lean/QLF_AperyPeriod.lean`](lean/QLF_AperyPeriod.lean); `phase = · % N` in [`lean/QLF_LoopClosure.lean`](lean/QLF_LoopClosure.lean)): the **finite closure census `C(2n,n)`** recovers `π` and `ζ(3)`, the substrate core lives in `RCA₀`, and `2π` is a *rendering* of `% N`, not an import. A finite, computable construction stands in for every continuum constant physics actually uses. So the continuum is **capturable countably** (1), **not determinate** (2), **finitarily conservative** (3), **physically unrealizable** (4), and **constructively unneeded** (5) — three classical strikes, two machine-checked QLF strikes. The classical results put the continuum-as-determinate-object in the coffin; QLF supplies the finite, computable substrate that recovers what it was invoked for. None of this says `ℝ` is *false* (it is consistent); it says `ℝ` is *gratuitous* — not a determinate object, and not needed. --- ## 1. The Standard Continuum and Its Problems Classical physics treats spacetime as ℝ⁴ — four copies of the real line, complete, smooth, infinitely divisible. This framework has enormous predictive power at macroscopic scales. But it carries hidden costs: **Ultraviolet divergences.** When quantum field theory is defined on a continuous background, loop integrals over all momenta diverge. The infinities are real artifacts of assuming space is infinitely divisible. Renormalization removes them by hand — a procedure that works but has no clean first-principles justification. **The measurement problem.** A continuous wavefunction defined over all of ℝ³ must "collapse" instantaneously across arbitrary distances at measurement. No continuous dynamical equation produces this. **Non-constructive existence.** The real numbers themselves require either Dedekind cuts (completed infinite sets of rationals) or Cauchy sequences (infinite sequences with a limit that may not be computable). Neither construction can be executed by any finite algorithm. In the language of Reverse Mathematics, constructing ℝ requires at least WKL₀ — already above the computable bedrock RCA₀. --- ## 2. The Axiom of Choice and Physics The Axiom of Choice (AC) states: given any family of non-empty sets, there exists a function that selects one element from each set simultaneously, even if no rule for the selection is specifiable. AC is independent of ZFC set theory (Gödel 1938, Cohen 1963). Its adoption is a foundational *choice*, not a logical necessity. In mathematics, AC enables: - The Hahn-Banach theorem (functional analysis) - The well-ordering theorem (every set can be well-ordered) - Zorn's lemma (maximal element existence) - Non-measurable sets (Vitali, Banach-Tarski) The **Banach-Tarski paradox** — that a solid ball can be decomposed into finitely many pieces and reassembled into two balls of the same size — is a direct consequence of AC. This is not a physical result. It is a sign that AC permits the construction of objects with no physical instantiation. In physics, AC appears wherever existence is asserted without construction: - "There exists a ground state" (without constructing it) - "There exists a measurable function" (without specifying how to measure it) - "There exists a gauge fixing" (without an algorithm for choosing the gauge) Each of these is physically harmless when the object turns out to be constructible by other means. But invoking AC as a blanket justification allows unphysical mathematical objects — non-measurable sets, paradoxical decompositions, non-computable functions — to contaminate the physical ontology. --- ## 3. QLF's Resolution: The Continuum as Emergent, Not Foundational QLF does not model spacetime as a pre-existing continuous manifold. It generates spacetime event by event from discrete logical closures. **The foundational objects are discrete:** - Phase strings over a two-element alphabet `{pos, neg}` - The constructive tree `expand_generation n` of all such strings up to length n - The ZFA filter `full_zeno_prune` — a terminating algorithm - The stable states — the finite list `find_stable_states n` **The continuum emerges in the statistical limit.** As the generation depth n grows, the density of ZFA-stable states, their distribution (`C(2n,n)` symmetric strings among `4^n` total), and the phase correlations between them converge to smooth statistical distributions. What we perceive as a continuous field is the macroscale coarse-graining of a dense, discrete, constructive graph. This is not an approximation made for convenience. It is the claim that the *only* things that physically exist are the discrete closures, and that the continuum is the emergent statistical language we use to describe their aggregate behavior. The variational expression of the ZFA selection principle — ℒ=0 as condition of origin, with the continuous limit developed via `EventSynthesisField → Λ_eff` — is formalized in [Lagrangian_Formulation.md](Lagrangian_Formulation.md). ### The Lean Enforcement The Lean 4 type system makes this concrete. The combinatorial core of QLF: - `expand_generation : ℕ → List TopoString` — fully constructive - `full_zeno_prune : TopoString → TopoString` — terminating, no noncomputable steps - `find_stable_states : ℕ → List TopoString` — a decidable list filter - `find_stable_states_length_even : (find_stable_states (2*n)).length = C(2n,n)` — proved by Pascal induction None of these require the real numbers. None invoke AC. Lean 4 enforces this: if a proof uses `Classical.choice` (Lean 4's form of AC), it is flagged. The QLF combinatorial core is entirely `#check`able without classical axioms. The only point where continuity enters the Lean development is at the explicit axiom boundary: ``` spectral_hilbert_polya : scalar spectral mode ⟹ ρ.re = 1/2 ``` `ρ : ℂ` is a complex number — an element of the completed continuous field. This axiom is where the discrete QLF world makes contact with the analytic number theory of ζ(s). Lean 4 marks it as an `axiom`, not a `theorem`, precisely because crossing from the constructive discrete world to the continuous analytic world requires genuine new logical content. See [ReverseMathematics.md](ReverseMathematics.md) for the subsystem analysis. ### 3.1 Running couplings without a UV catastrophe The UV-divergence problem of §1 has a concrete face: **running coupling constants**. In a continuum QFT a coupling `α(μ)` runs with energy `μ`, and for an abelian theory (QED) it grows until it hits a **Landau pole** — `1/α = 0` at a *finite* energy, a genuine divergence, because the loop integrals run over an infinitely divisible momentum space. QLF anchors the one-loop structure in [`lean/QLF_RunningCouplings.lean`](lean/QLF_RunningCouplings.lean): the inverse coupling runs **logarithmically**, `1/α(t) = 1/α₀ + (b/2π)·t` with `t = ln(μ/μ₀)` (`inv_coupling`) — and the `2π` is the substrate **loop phase**, the same one in `g−2 = α/2π` and the horizon temperature. The sign of `b` splits the two regimes: `b > 0` gives **asymptotic freedom** (`asymptotic_freedom`, the non-abelian/QCD coupling vanishes at high energy), `b < 0` gives **screening** (`infrared_growth`, the QED coupling grows). The Landau pole is *located* at the finite `t* = −(1/α₀)·2π/b` (`landau_pole_location`). The QLF resolution is exactly §1's: the substrate is **discrete and bounded below by the Planck event scale**, so the running carries a hard UV cutoff `t_max = ln(M_Planck/μ₀)`; the integration never reaches a pole sitting above it, and every coupling is finite at every physical scale. *There is no UV catastrophe because there is no infinitely divisible momentum space to integrate over.* What QLF does **not** derive is the β-coefficients `b_i` (they need the full SU(3)×SU(2)×U(1) matter content) or the GUT scale, so the `sin²θ_W = 3/8 → 0.231` running ([`QLF_WeinbergAngle`](lean/QLF_WeinbergAngle.lean)) is *consistent with* one-loop evolution but not derived (`running_couplings_structural`) — the open numbers of the renormalization sector. **The QED-α case.** The fine-structure constant is the abelian (screening) instance: `α(0) = 1/137` is the IR (`q²→0`) anchor — the coupling of *fully-rendered 3-D space* — and `α(M_Z) ≈ 1/128` is the less-screened high-energy value. QLF reads the running as the **effective-dimension flow** `3→2` toward the UV (Myrheim–Meyer dimension, [`QLF_CausalDimension`](lean/QLF_CausalDimension.lean)), which takes `α : 1/137 → 1/132` (`alpha_QLF_2d_counterfactual`) — the right direction; the magnitude is the open matter-vacuum-polarization sector. Because `α` is a function of the rendering dimension alone (`α(d) = 1/(128 + d²)`), the *fundamental* `α(0)` carries no cosmological-time drift (a falsifiable prediction). Full account: [**Alpha.md**](Alpha.md). **Update — the strong β-coefficient *is* substrate-fixed.** The QCD one-loop coefficient `b₀ = 11 N_c/3 − 2 n_f/3` is read off the substrate ([`lean/QLF_BetaFunction.lean`](lean/QLF_BetaFunction.lean)): `N_c = 3` is the three spatial axes (the SU(3) of `QLF_StrongAlgebra`) and `n_f = 6` is two quark flavours per generation times the three generations (`QLF_Generations`), giving `b₀ = 11·3/3 − 2·6/3 = 7` (`beta_coefficient_eq_seven`) — antiscreening (`11 > 4`) ⟹ asymptotic freedom. That feeds the hierarchy `ln R_p = 2π/(b₀ α_s) = 2π/(7 α_s)` ([`QLF_MassSpectrum`](lean/QLF_MassSpectrum.lean) §3.3a of `Per_Qubit_Mass_Quantum.md`), so the `~10¹⁹` proton scale is dimensional transmutation with a substrate-fixed coefficient — only `α_s` and the Planck→SI calibration remain. The `11/3`, `2/3` one-loop *structure* itself is standard β-function group theory (input), and the electroweak coefficients stay open. --- ## 4. The Lorentz Invariance Problem The most persistent objection to any discrete physics model: **a fixed spatial lattice breaks Lorentz invariance.** On a cubic grid, moving diagonally takes √2 times as many steps as moving axially. Different observers moving at different velocities would measure different physics — a preferred frame. QLF is not a lattice model. There is no pre-existing spatial grid. The resolution is structural: **Space in QLF is a causal partial order, not a coordinate grid.** Two events are "close" if their ZFA closures are logically dependent — if one must complete before the other can begin, or if they share phase balance constraints. Distance is not measured by counting ticks on a pre-assigned axis. It is a derived quantity: the number of intermediate ZFA steps needed to transmit information between two events. In a sufficiently dense causal network, the statistical distribution of causal paths recovers the Minkowski metric in the macroscale limit. This is the same mechanism by which causal set theory (Bombelli, Lee, Myrheim, Sorkin 1987) recovers Lorentz invariance: the Lorentz group acts as the symmetry of the *statistics* of causal links, not of any fixed underlying structure. QLF adds the ZFA constraint on top: not all causal sequences are permitted — only those whose phase strings achieve zero free action. The ZFA filter is the physical selection principle that carves the Lorentz-invariant macroscale out of the raw combinatorial tree. --- ## 5. Zeno's Paradoxes and ZFA Zeno's classical paradoxes (fifth century BCE) are the original statement of the continuum problem for physics. **Achilles and the Tortoise:** To reach the tortoise, Achilles must first cover half the distance, then half of that, then half of that — infinitely many steps, each positive. An infinite sum of positive terms cannot be completed. **The Stadium Paradox (discrete version):** If space has a minimum unit of distance, two rows of objects moving past each other at minimum speed skip past each other without ever being adjacent — violating the intermediate value theorem. Both paradoxes arise from a false dichotomy: space must be either infinitely divisible (leading to the infinite-step problem) or atomically discrete with a fixed minimum length (leading to the stadium paradox). ### The QLF Resolution QLF dissolves both horns of the dilemma. **Against infinite divisibility:** There is no infinitely divisible background. The only objects that exist are ZFA-closed events. There is no "point halfway between two events" unless a ZFA closure exists there. The infinite-step regress cannot arise because intermediate steps are not automatically real — they must be generated by the QuCalc tree and survive the ZFA filter. Most candidate intermediate histories are pruned. **Against fixed minimum length:** The spacing between successive ZFA closures is not fixed. It depends on the phase complexity of the events involved. High-frequency, simple events can be densely packed; complex, high-depth events are spaced further apart. There is no universal minimum distance — the effective granularity is dynamically determined by logical depth. The stadium paradox does not arise because there is no lattice to step across. **The positive statement:** Motion is the propagation of a phase-stable history string through the generated possibility tree. `full_zeno_prune` acts as the convergence guarantee: every candidate history either reaches ZFA closure (a physical event) or is pruned (no event). The Zeno infinite-step sequence corresponds to a history that never terminates — and the ZFA filter correctly classifies it: it does not achieve `full_zeno_prune s = []`. It is not physical. The "smoothness" of continuous motion at macroscopic scales is the statistical consequence of the ZFA filter admitting only perfectly balanced, symmetric closures. Apparent continuity is the coarse-grained average of a dense but discrete sequence of ZFA events. --- ## 6. No Axiom of Choice in the Physical Core QLF's resolution of the continuum and the Zeno paradoxes does not invoke AC at any step. - **expand_generation** constructs strings by explicit recursion — no choice needed - **full_zeno_prune** terminates by a strictly decreasing length measure — no choice needed - **achieves_ZFA_bool** is a decidable boolean computation — no choice needed - **find_stable_states_length_even** is proved by structural induction on ℕ — no choice needed The physical claim "this history is real" is equivalent to the constructive claim "this string terminates under full_zeno_prune with empty output." No non-constructive witness is needed. Every physical event is a proof. This is the precise sense in which QLF replaces the Axiom of Choice with the ZFA filter. Where ZFC + AC says "there exists a selection function," QLF says "here is the algorithm that constructs the selection: run full_zeno_prune, keep only those strings that reach []." The Axiom of Choice is not needed because the physically real is the constructively computable. --- ## 7. The Millennium face: where the continuum stops answering The continuum does not give a *wrong* answer on the six Clay Millennium problems — it gives **no** answer. Each becomes intractable or undefined precisely in its **continuum-analytic** limit, while the discrete substrate returns a clean result: the Yang–Mills gap *is* `log 2 > 0` on the substrate ([`YangMills_MassGap_QLF.md`](YangMills_MassGap_QLF.md)); Navier–Stokes blow-up *is* the non-terminating tail the substrate prunes ([`NavierStokes_QLF.md`](NavierStokes_QLF.md)); Riemann's critical line *is* the `H ↔ H†` self-adjoint locus; and P vs NP, BSD, Hodge are *finitary*, not continuum problems at all. So each problem's single bridge axiom ([`Open_Problems.md`](Open_Problems.md), [`Millennium.md`](Millennium.md)) is exactly the step crossing from the discrete substrate (where QLF answers) into the continuum rendering (where the question loses its footing). The catalogue of Clay problems is, read this way, the catalogue of *where the continuum stops being able to answer* — and where the discrete substrate begins. --- The same capacity reading applies to *laws*, not just to state spaces: a system with more states can always break a finite closure, so every restrictive law has a real exception and no finite closure is final — [`Law_Of_Exceptions.md`](Law_Of_Exceptions.md), machine-verified in [`lean/QLF_LawOfExceptions.lean`](lean/QLF_LawOfExceptions.lean). ## Summary | Classical assumption | QLF replacement | |---|---| | Spacetime = ℝ⁴ (pre-existing continuum) | Spacetime = emergent statistical coarse-graining of discrete ZFA events | | Lorentz invariance from continuous symmetry group | Lorentz invariance emerges as statistical symmetry of dense causal partial order | | Zeno paradoxes resolved by infinite series summation | Zeno paradoxes dissolved — non-terminating histories are pruned, not summed | | Axiom of Choice enables non-constructive existence | ZFA filter replaces AC — physical existence = constructive termination | | Divergent loop integrals in QFT | No infinitely divisible background; no UV divergences at source | The continuum is not rejected. It is derived — as the macroscale limit of a dense, constructive, ZFA-filtered combinatorial process. The Axiom of Choice is not needed because every physical object that exists can be explicitly constructed by the QuCalc engine.
