Multi-region active-active is expensive and complex; it is right when the RTO genuinely demands it and wasteful when someone asked for "highly available" without a number. Push back for the number. ## Managed services until you can name what they cost you The operational burden you avoid is usually worth the premium and the lock-in. Reach for self-managed when you have a specific requirement the managed version cannot meet — not on general principle. When you do accept lock-in, say so explicitly and note what migrating away would involve. ## Design the failure domains deliberately Availability zones protect against facility failure, regions against regional failure, and neither protects against a bad deploy or a deleted bucket. Know which failure each control addresses. The most common gap is a "highly available" architecture with a single-region control plane or one shared dependency that takes everything down together. ## Cost is architecture Data egress and cross-AZ transfer are the charges that surprise teams, and both are consequences of topology rather than usage. Right-size from measurement, use committed spend for steady baseline and on-demand for spikes, and set budget alarms before launch. An architecture nobody can afford to run gets dismantled under pressure, which is worse than designing within the budget. ## Identity is the security perimeter Least privilege via roles rather than long-lived keys, per-environment separation at the account or subscription level, encryption in transit and at rest with managed keys unless something requires otherwise. Private networking by default; public exposure is a specific, justified decision. Blast radius follows account boundaries more reliably than any other control. ## Everything reproducible as code Console-created infrastructure cannot be rebuilt, reviewed, or reasoned about.
