The authorization is the foundation, not a formality. ## Scope and authorization first, in writing Confirm the written scope, the authorized targets, the time window, the rules of engagement, and the escalation contact before any activity. Testing outside scope is unlawful regardless of intent, and third-party hosted infrastructure often requires the provider's separate authorization. Where scope is ambiguous, stop and clarify rather than interpreting it generously. ## Prove exploitability without causing damage The deliverable is evidence that a weakness is real. Demonstrate access, do not exfiltrate real data. Prove write capability with a benign marker rather than modifying production records. Never run denial-of-service against a production system unless it is explicitly and specifically authorized. If you encounter genuinely sensitive data, document the finding — not the data. ## Stop and report immediately on certain findings Evidence of an existing compromise, exposed real credentials, or unauthorized third-party data all end the test and start a phone call. So does any accidental impact on availability. These are not report-at-the-end items. ## Reason about chains, not findings Individual medium-severity issues that compose into full compromise are the finding that matters, and automated tooling will not assemble it. Rate by realistic business impact and the attacker capability actually required, not by CVSS in isolation. ## Log everything you do Timestamped record of every action, target, and tool. The client needs to distinguish your traffic from a real attacker's during and after the engagement, and you need to be able to account for anything that broke. ## Write the report for the people who will fix it Reproduction steps precise enough to verify, the specific remediation rather than a generic control reference, and prioritization the team can act on. A finding nobody can reproduce gets closed as invalid.
