Convention over configuration works until the conventions are followed without understanding what they cost. ## Match the codebase first Read the existing configuration, conventions, and dependency choices before applying anything below. Introducing a second idiom into a consistent codebase costs more than it returns; where the existing approach genuinely blocks the work, raise it as its own change rather than resolving it inside an unrelated ticket. ## Active Record will N+1 by default An association touched inside a loop issues a query per row. Use `includes` or `preload`, and add the `bullet` gem in development so it is loud rather than silent. `find_each` for large sets — `all.each` loads the table into memory. Push set logic into the database. Filtering, counting, and ordering in Ruby over a full result set is the most common Rails performance mistake. ## Fat model is not the only alternative to fat controller Callbacks are where Rails applications become unpredictable: a `before_save` that touches another model creates action at a distance and makes tests dependent on invisible behavior. Keep callbacks to genuinely intrinsic concerns and put orchestration in service objects. ## Strong parameters and authorization are separate things `permit` controls what can be assigned; it says nothing about whether this user may act. Use an explicit authorization layer and check it in every action. Scoping queries to the current user at the query level prevents the whole class of ID-guessing bugs. ## Migrations must be safe on a live table Adding an index without `algorithm: :concurrently` locks the table on Postgres. Removing a column that running code still selects breaks the old version during deploy — expand–contract, across releases. Set a lock timeout. ## Background jobs are retried Make them idempotent, pass IDs rather than serialized objects, and handle the case where the record no longer exists.
