It lets AI assistants such as Claude Desktop, Cursor, Windsurf and VS Code Copilot upload, download, list, search, share and manage files on Storj using natural language, through 28 tools built on the [storj-uplink-nodejs](https://github.com/shivamkumar99/storj-uplink-nodejs) native binding. > *"Upload this file to my photos bucket"* > *"List all objects in my backup bucket"* > *"Generate a share link for report.pdf"* ## Table of Contents - [Features](#features) - [Quick Start](#quick-start) - [Alternative: Environment Variables](#alternative-environment-variables) - [Managing Credentials](#managing-credentials) - [Available Tools](#available-tools) - [Running in Docker](#running-in-docker) - [Development](#development) - [Uninstalling](#uninstalling) - [FAQ](#faq) - [Why Storj?](#why-storj) - [Requirements](#requirements) - [Related Projects](#related-projects) - [Contributing](#contributing) - [License](#license) ## Features - ๐Ÿชฃ **Bucket management** โ€” create, list, stat, usage summary, delete (single or batch with glob patterns) - ๐Ÿ“ **Object operations** โ€” upload, download, copy, move, delete, stat, update metadata - ๐Ÿ—‚๏ธ **Bulk transfers** โ€” upload a whole directory or download a whole prefix, streamed with per-file progress - ๐Ÿ” **Smart reading of large files** โ€” `peek_object_head`, `peek_object_tail` and `grep_object` fetch only the bytes they need, so a multi-GB log never enters the AI's context - ๐Ÿ—‘๏ธ **Batch delete** โ€” delete multiple buckets or objects by name list, prefix, or glob pattern (`*.log`, `tmp-*`) - ๐Ÿ”— **Sharing** โ€” public URLs, restricted access grants, and S3-compatible credentials (least privilege, time-limited, prefix-scoped) - ๐Ÿงน **Multipart housekeeping** โ€” find and abort incomplete multipart uploads that still cost storage - ๐Ÿ–ผ๏ธ **Interactive browser** โ€” hosts that support [MCP Apps](https://modelcontextprotocol.io/extensions/apps) render `list_buckets` and `list_objects` as one sortable, filterable browser: open a bucket, walk folders, preview files; other hosts get the same result as text - โšก **Configurable chunk size** โ€” tune upload/download buffer size (4 KB โ€“ 64 MB) for optimal performance - ๐Ÿ“Š **Progress and cancellation** โ€” MCP progress notifications for long operations; client cancellation stops transfers mid-stream - ๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ **Hardened by default** โ€” path-traversal and Zip-Slip guards, symlink-safe directory walks, prompt-injection sanitising of untrusted keys and content, secret redaction, audit log on stderr - ๐Ÿ” **Encrypted credentials** โ€” AES-256-GCM encryption with machine-specific key, `chmod 600` - ๐Ÿณ **Docker** โ€” image built on [Docker Hardened Images](https://docs.docker.com/dhi/) (non-root, no shell, SBOM-attested) and a hardened compose file (see [infra/](infra/)) - ๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ **Multi-client** โ€” works with Claude Desktop, Cursor, Windsurf, VS Code Copilot, and any MCP client - ๐ŸŒ **Cross-platform** โ€” macOS, Linux, Windows ## Quick Start ### Step 1 โ€” Install and run the setup wizard #### Global install ```bash npm install -g storj-uplink-mcp # Install globally storj-uplink-mcp-setup # Run setup wizard ``` #### Local install ```bash npm install storj-uplink-mcp # Install locally npx storj-uplink-mcp-setup # Run setup wizard (recommended) # Or: ./node_modules/.bin/storj-uplink-mcp-setup ``` The wizard will ask for your Storj credentials (Access Grant or Satellite + API Key + Passphrase) and save them **encrypted** on your machine. You only need to do this once. > **Get an Access Grant:** Log in to [Storj Console](https://console.storj.io) โ†’ Access โ†’ Create Access Grant โ†’ select permissions โ†’ copy the grant string. ### Step 2 โ€” Add to your AI client config > **๐Ÿ’ก Tip:** Not sure where the config file is? Run the helper command for your client to find or open it: > > | Client | Find config path | > |--------|-----------------| > | **Claude Desktop** | macOS: `open ~/Library/Application\ Support/Claude/`
Windows: `explorer %APPDATA%\Claude\` | > | **Cursor** | `cursor --locate-mcp-config` or check `~/.cursor/mcp.json` | > | **Windsurf** | Check `~/.codeium/windsurf/mcp_config.json` | > | **VS Code** | Create `.vscode/mcp.json` in your workspace, or open User Settings JSON (`Cmd+Shift+P` โ†’ "Open User Settings (JSON)") | > > Config paths vary by OS and version. When in doubt, check your client's official docs. #### Claude Desktop Edit `~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json` (macOS) or `%APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json` (Windows): ```json { "mcpServers": { "storj": { "command": "storj-uplink-mcp", "args": [] } } } ``` If you installed globally, use `"command": "storj-uplink-mcp"`. If you prefer npx, use: ```json { "mcpServers": { "storj": { "command": "npx", "args": ["storj-uplink-mcp"] } } } ``` #### Cursor Edit `~/.cursor/mcp.json`: ```json { "mcpServers": { "storj": { "command": "storj-uplink-mcp", "args": [] } } } ``` #### Windsurf Edit `~/.codeium/windsurf/mcp_config.json`: ```json { "mcpServers": { "storj": { "command": "storj-uplink-mcp", "args": [] } } } ``` #### VS Code (Copilot) Create `.vscode/mcp.json` in your workspace: ```json { "servers": { "storj": { "type": "stdio", "command": "npx", "args": ["storj-uplink-mcp"] } } } ``` Or add to your User Settings JSON (`Cmd+Shift+P` โ†’ "Preferences: Open User Settings (JSON)"): ```json { "mcp": { "servers": { "storj": { "type": "stdio", "command": "npx", "args": ["storj-uplink-mcp"] } } } } ``` ### Step 3 โ€” Restart your AI client Fully quit and reopen Claude, Cursor, or Windsurf. Then try: > *"List my Storj buckets"* > *"Upload this text as notes/todo.txt in my bucket"* > *"Generate a share URL for bucket/photo.jpg"* --- ## Alternative: Environment Variables If you prefer not to use the setup wizard (useful for CI, Docker, or power users): ```json { "mcpServers": { "storj": { "command": "npx", "args": ["storj-uplink-mcp"], "env": { "STORJ_ACCESS_GRANT": "your-access-grant-string" } } } } ``` Or with individual credentials: ```json { "env": { "STORJ_SATELLITE": "us1.storj.io:7777", "STORJ_API_KEY": "your-api-key", "STORJ_PASSPHRASE": "your-passphrase" } } ``` Env vars take priority over the config file. Optional display setting, independent of credentials: | Variable | Effect | |---|---| | `STORJ_MCP_TIMEZONE` | IANA time zone for timestamps in tool output, e.g. `Asia/Kolkata` โ†’ `2026-09-11T21:19:28+05:30`. Unset = UTC (`โ€ฆZ`). Unknown names are ignored with a warning on stderr. | `list_buckets` also accepts `sort_by: "created"` to order by creation time instead of Storj's name order. --- ## Managing Credentials ### Credential commands (global install) ```bash storj-uplink-mcp-setup # Setup/reconfigure storj-uplink-mcp-setup --status # Check credential source storj-uplink-mcp-setup --reset # Delete saved config ``` ### Credential commands (local install) ```bash npx storj-uplink-mcp-setup # Setup/reconfigure npx storj-uplink-mcp-setup --status # Check credential source npx storj-uplink-mcp-setup --reset # Delete saved config # Or: ./node_modules/.bin/storj-uplink-mcp-setup --reset ``` Credentials are stored encrypted at `~/.storj-mcp/config.json` using AES-256-GCM with a machine-specific key. The file is only readable by your user account (`chmod 600`). --- ## Available Tools 28 tools. Every tool declares MCP annotations (read-only / destructive / idempotent) so clients can ask before destructive calls. **Buckets** | Tool | Description | |------|-------------| | `list_buckets` | List all buckets (optionally `sort_by: "created"`). Pull the image ```bash docker pull shivam995364/storj-uplink-mcp:latest ``` Every release tag publishes `:latest`, the exact version (`:1.0.2`), and the moving `:1.0` and `:1` tags. Pin the exact version in production. ### 2. Run it The server speaks the MCP **stdio** transport: the client starts the process and exchanges JSON-RPC over stdin and stdout. There is no daemon and no port to publish, so the container is started per session with `-i` and given credentials at run time. ```bash docker run -i --rm \ --read-only \ --tmpfs /tmp:rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,size=64m \ --cap-drop ALL \ --security-opt no-new-privileges \ --pids-limit 128 \ --memory 512m \ -e STORJ_ACCESS_GRANT="your-access-grant" \ shivam995364/storj-uplink-mcp:latest ``` Keep the grant out of your shell history by putting it in a file instead and passing `--env-file /path/to/storj.env`. The file holds either `STORJ_ACCESS_GRANT=...` or the `STORJ_SATELLITE_ADDRESS` / `STORJ_API_KEY` / `STORJ_PASSPHRASE` trio; `chmod 600` it. Nothing is ever baked into the image. To check the image works before wiring up a client, send a handshake by hand. It prints the server info and the tool list: ```bash printf '%s\n' \ '{"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":1,"method":"initialize","params":{"protocolVersion":"2025-11-25","capabilities":{},"clientInfo":{"name":"cli","version":"0"}}}' \ '{"jsonrpc":"2.0","method":"notifications/initialized"}' \ '{"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":2,"method":"tools/list"}' \ | docker run -i --rm shivam995364/storj-uplink-mcp:latest ``` ### 3. Point your AI client at the image Use the same flags as the command above, with your credentials file: ```json { "mcpServers": { "storj": { "command": "docker", "args": [ "run", "-i", "--rm", "--read-only", "--tmpfs", "/tmp:rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,size=64m", "--cap-drop", "ALL", "--security-opt", "no-new-privileges", "--pids-limit", "128", "--memory", "512m", "--env-file", "/absolute/path/to/storj.env", "-v", "/absolute/path/to/exchange:/data", "shivam995364/storj-uplink-mcp:latest" ] } } } ``` The `-v` mount is what makes the file tools usable: `upload_file`, `upload_directory`, `download_file` and `download_prefix` see the container's filesystem, which is read-only apart from `/tmp`. Mount a host folder and refer to `/data/...` in your prompts. Drop the mount if you only use the text and listing tools. On Apple Silicon add `"--platform", "linux/amd64"`; the image runs under emulation because the native Storj binding ships a linux-x64 prebuilt. ### Build it yourself The Dockerfile, a compose file with the same hardening, and the full security notes are in [infra/](infra/): ```bash npm run docker:build ``` --- ## Development ```bash npm test # unit + protocol tests (Vitest, in-memory MCP transport) npm run lint # ESLint (type-aware) incl. the 200-line file limit npm run typecheck npm run knip # unused exports / dependencies npm run inspect # MCP Inspector against the built server npm run dev:storj up # private Storj network in Docker (storj-up) for testing npm run test:e2e # full tool lifecycle against that local network ``` The code is organised as vertical slices (one folder per feature with `schema.ts`, `handlers.ts`, `tools.ts`); see [ARCHITECTURE.md](ARCHITECTURE.md). The local Storj network for testing without touching the real network is documented in [infra/dev/README.md](infra/dev/README.md). --- ## Uninstalling ### 1. Remove the MCP server config from your AI client Remove the `"storj"` entry from the config file you added it to: | Client | Config location | |--------|----------------| | **Claude Desktop** | macOS: `~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json`
Windows: `%APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json` | | **Cursor** | `~/.cursor/mcp.json` | | **Windsurf** | `~/.codeium/windsurf/mcp_config.json` | | **VS Code** | `.vscode/mcp.json` in your workspace, or User Settings JSON | ### 2. Delete saved credentials ```bash # Using the setup CLI: storj-uplink-mcp-setup --reset # Or npx: npx storj-uplink-mcp-setup --reset # Or manually remove the config directory: rm -rf ~/.storj-mcp ``` ### 3. Uninstall the package ```bash # If installed globally: npm uninstall -g storj-uplink-mcp # If installed locally in a project: npm uninstall storj-uplink-mcp ``` ### 4. Verify removal ```bash # Should return nothing / "not found": which storj-uplink-mcp npm list -g storj-uplink-mcp ``` --- ## FAQ ### What is storj-uplink-mcp? An MCP server that connects AI assistants to Storj object storage. Once configured, you can ask Claude Desktop, Cursor, Windsurf or VS Code Copilot to manage buckets and files on Storj in plain language; the assistant calls the server's tools on your behalf. ### Which AI clients does it work with? Any client that implements the Model Context Protocol over stdio: Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf, VS Code Copilot and others. Clients that support MCP Apps also render an interactive file browser for bucket and object listings. ### Where are my Storj credentials stored? Either in environment variables or in `~/.storj-mcp/config.json`, encrypted with AES-256-GCM using a machine-specific key and readable only by your user. Credentials never leave your machine and are redacted from every error message and log line. ### Can it read large files without downloading them? Yes. `peek_object_head`, `peek_object_tail` and `grep_object` fetch only the bytes they need, so a multi-gigabyte log can be inspected without pulling it into the assistant's context. ### Does it work with S3 tools? Yes. `get_s3_credentials` issues S3-compatible credentials scoped to one bucket or prefix, with least-privilege permissions and an optional expiry, for use with rclone, the AWS CLI or any S3 SDK. ### Is there a way to test it without a Storj account? Yes. [infra/dev](infra/dev/README.md) starts a private Storj network in Docker (built on storj-up, the tool Storj uses for its own testing) and runs the full tool suite against it. ## Why Storj? [Storj](https://storj.io) is a decentralized cloud storage platform that provides: - **S3-compatible** โ€” drop-in replacement for Amazon S3 - **End-to-end encryption** โ€” data is encrypted client-side before upload - **Distributed** โ€” files are split, encrypted, and stored across a global network of nodes - **No egress fees** โ€” predictable pricing with no surprise bandwidth charges - **99.95% availability** โ€” built-in redundancy across thousands of nodes - **Open source** โ€” fully open-source storage infrastructure ## Requirements - **Node.js 18+** - A [Storj account](https://storj.io) with an API key or Access Grant (free tier available โ€” 25 GB storage, 25 GB bandwidth/month) ## Related Projects - [storj-uplink-nodejs](https://github.com/shivamkumar99/storj-uplink-nodejs) โ€” the Node.js native binding for Storj's uplink-c library that this server is built on - [Model Context Protocol](https://modelcontextprotocol.io) โ€” the open protocol that connects AI assistants to tools and data - [Storj documentation](https://docs.storj.io) โ€” buckets, access grants, S3 compatibility and the Storj network ## Contributing Issues and pull requests are welcome!
