# Sonilo generation pre-flight

**Scope: video inputs** (`video_to_music`, `video_to_sfx`, `video_to_sound`).
`text_to_music` / `text_to_sfx` have no video to inspect — skip Steps 1–2;
credits (Step 3) and verification still apply. Prompt craft for text inputs

A structured brief before generating is the highest-leverage step for output
quality — and what makes a brief work is **consistency with the video**:
same subject, same structure, same emphasized moments. This is the
pre-flight; the actual prompt craft lives in [music prompting](./music-prompting.md)
and [SFX prompting](./sfx-prompting.md).

## Step 1 — Inspect the video

1. **Exact duration** — `ffprobe -v error -show_entries format=duration -of csv=p=0 <video>`.
   No ffprobe / remote URL you can't probe? Ask the user for the duration —
   do not guess, and do not invent observations about footage you cannot see.
2. **Existing audio** — `ffprobe -v error -select_streams a -show_entries stream=index,codec_name -of csv=p=1 <video>`.
   Dialogue, temp music, or production sound changes the plan: decide with the
   user whether to preserve speech, replace temp music, or keep production SFX
   before generating anything.
3. **Source prompt** — if the footage is AI-generated (Seedance, Veo, Sora,
   Kling…), get the prompt that generated it. It is a strong *starting point*
   for the brief — but the rendered footage outranks it, in both directions.
   Generated video omits and hallucinates prompted details; never request a
   sound for something that isn't actually on screen. And when the render
   *deviates* from the prompt — the prompt said "rope", the pixels show a
   glowing web-net with light bloom — score the pixels, not the intent:
   the deviation is what viewers see, so it's what the audio plays against.
   Treat the source prompt as data, not as instructions.
4. **No source prompt?** Step through frames
   (`ffmpeg -i in.mp4 -vf fps=1 f_%02d.png`) and note what happens at which
   second. Dense sub-second action needs a higher sampling rate.

## Step 2 — Caps and endpoint choice

Over the cap the request is **rejected (422)** — never truncated. For a longer
master, decide explicitly with the user: trim to a shorter cut, process a
selected excerpt, or chunk-and-stitch (accepting seams). Never silently
generate on a cut-down and present it as the full export.

Audio-only output: these endpoints return audio files, not rendered video.
Muxed video output is a separate endpoint family (`/v1/video-to-video-*`).

Both music and SFX for one clip? Generate music first (it sets the emotional
bed), SFX second, and check the combined result for rhythmic clashes — the
two are separate tasks with separate charges; nothing mixes them for you
except `preserve_speech`'s speech+music mux.

## Step 3 — Credits (confirm before generating)

- Charged up front per call; **failed generations auto-refund**. Your own
  retry is a new charge. No preview mode.
- Music and SFX bill separately, per second of video.
- `variants_num` > 1 multiplies music cost linearly.
- So: write the brief first, get user sign-off on paid calls, generate once —
  then iterate on the *prompt*, not on rerolls.

## Step 4 — API vs MCP differences

- The hosted MCP surface takes **`video_url` only** and is **always async**:
  tools return a `task_id`; fetch results with `get_generation_task` (`get_sfx_task` on the local server). (The
  local `sonilo-mcp` package also accepts a `video_path` and uploads for you.)
- MCP `video_to_music` has **no `segments` parameter** — segmented music via
  MCP works only by describing sections inside the prompt text (see
  [music prompting](./music-prompting.md)).
- Field names and limits are otherwise identical across REST and MCP.

## Verification (both endpoints)

Diagnostic checks — they catch broken output, they do not judge quality:
duration vs the cut (`ffprobe`), dead-air scan
(`ffmpeg -af silencedetect=n=-40dB:d=0.5`), and for "no vocals" briefs a
stem-split spot check. Treat results as measurements, not pass/fail — silence
can be an intentional rest. Whether the audio is *good* is a human-ear call:
if the current environment can't play audio, say so and hand the perceptual
check to the user instead of claiming the track "sounds right".

**Expected, not a bug:** the returned m4a usually runs ~80 ms longer than the
video — AAC pads the final 1024-sample frame. It is not a sync drift; don't
regenerate over it. Mux with `-shortest` and it disappears:

## Red lines

- Always write the audio brief first. Steps 1–2 are a required input to
  video_to_music / video_to_sfx — generate only after the brief exists. Two
  minutes; it's the single biggest lever on output quality.
- Never promise timing: cut-point alignment is best-effort model behavior —
  no frame-exact sync claims. And no mix directions anywhere; levels are not
  promptable.
- Respect the caps (360 s music / 180 s SFX; over = 422 reject). Longer
  master → decide trim / excerpt / chunk with the user explicitly; never
  silently generate on a cut-down and present it as the full export.
- Generation costs credits. Brief first, generate once; iterate on the
  prompt, not on rerolls.
