[Status of the Project](#status-project) ## Purpose of the Meeting {#purpose} Sunil Abraham described the unfinished manuscript project as one of the most important TSAP projects connected with the 30th anniversary programme. At this stage, the [material being made available](/amaa/unfinished-manuscript/) is not intended to be presented as a completed or high-quality reconstruction of the manuscript. Instead, the documentation is intended in part to make the methodology visible and to solicit feedback on the proposed approach. ## The Source Material and the Manuscript {#source-and-manuscript} The discussion clarified an important distinction between the [physical source document](/amaa/unfinished-manuscript/#top) and the unfinished manuscript. The fact that the surviving material had previously been assembled and bound together does not mean that the resulting 115-page document represents the manuscript in that form. The current source document contains different essays, sections and fragments, some of which have already been documented or published elsewhere. The reconstruction project therefore needs to determine how these materials relate to the proposed unfinished manuscript. ## Proposed Methodology {#proposed-methodology} Sunil described a methodology based on detailed documentation and collection of contemporary evidence from the relevant geographical area. The proposed research would focus on Kottarakkara Taluk, Kollam district, Kerala, rather than attempting to cover the much larger district. The intention is not to use sampling, but to document the relevant religious landscape as comprehensively as possible. The proposed documentation would include: - places of worship; - objects of worship; - forms and types of worship; - religious functionaries and their roles; - festivals; - photographs; - video recordings; - audio recordings of forms and types of worship; - geographical and GPS information; and - other forms of structured documentation and data. Sunil proposed that 10 researchers work for at least 10 months to collect this material, creating a substantial body of contemporary information. ## Analysis and Reconstruction {#analysis} The proposed methodology involves bringing together three principal bodies of material: 1. the surviving fragments of the unfinished manuscript; 2. the corpus of writings and books by A. M. A. Ayrookuzhiel; and 3. the contemporary material collected by the researchers. The surviving fragments would be examined carefully to identify missing material and determine whether the fragments are complete. The proposed analysis would examine relationships between Dalit and upper-caste religious practices, including common and exclusive temples, gods, rituals and other forms of religious participation. ## Proposed Structure {#proposed-structure} Sunil suggested that the methodological categories could also provide the basis for chapters of the reconstructed work. The discussion referred to the possibility of developing new chapters from the analytical categories identified in the methodology. Some aspects of the methodology, particularly questions concerning religious and non-religious functionaries and caste participation, were discussed as areas that might require further consideration. Sunil suggested that these areas might be left out of a first version and considered for a later edition. This was discussed as a possible approach rather than as a final editorial decision. ## Review and Development {#review} The proposed process extends beyond the initial collection and reconstruction of the material. Sunil described a possible first year in which the initial manuscript would be developed, followed by a second year devoted to polishing and reviewing it. The draft could be presented to different scholars and other readers for discussion and feedback. The discussion also considered regular meetings with the researchers during the research period. Sunil proposed that the 10 researchers could meet with the project team each month for a half-day online meeting, potentially involving scholars from CISRS and other locations. The meetings could include focused, editathon-like sessions for developing the proposed chapters. When incorporating feedback, Sunil emphasised the importance of taking A. M. A. Ayrookuzhiel's writings and documented approach to the subject into account. ## The 2026 Research Context {#context-2026} An important aspect of the discussion was the possibility that contemporary research could reveal differences between the assumptions visible in the surviving fragments and the religious situation found in 2026. Sunil suggested that the research might reveal greater overlap or "mainstreaming" between Dalit and upper-caste religious practices than may have been anticipated when the original material was written. The research could therefore provide evidence for different possible conclusions, depending on what the surviving fragments and contemporary documentation establish. These possibilities remain hypotheses to be tested through the research and are not conclusions of the reconstruction project. ## Broader Vision {#broader-vision} Beyond the reconstruction of the manuscript itself, Sunil described a broader vision of comprehensive documentation of religious and cultural life. The proposed project would preserve information through multiple forms, including text, audio, video, images, maps and databases. The aim would be not only to document what exists, but also to preserve a record that can be used to understand how religious and cultural practices evolve.
