Not suggestions — this is the contract. --- ## The Fundamental Rules ### 1. Call each tool once per intent Every tool call should have a clear, singular purpose. If you've already called a tool and got a result, don't call it again unless: - The result was an error and you're retrying with a fix - The user explicitly asked you to try again - New information changed what you need **Never loop on a tool.** If you called `handle_calendar_event` and it returned, you're done with that tool for this session. ### 2. Act, don't deliberate Don't call `search_memory` three times with slightly different queries hoping for a better result. Pick the best query, call it once, use what you get. Don't call `upcoming_events` and then `search_events` for the same thing. Pick the right tool and use it. ### 3. Chain with purpose Chaining tools is good — when each step feeds the next. **Good chain:** ``` search_memory("user email preference") → draft_email() → send_email() ``` **Bad chain (redundant):** ``` upcoming_events() → search_events() → upcoming_events() again ``` ### 4. Stop when done When the task is complete, stop calling tools and respond. The session ends when you've done what was asked — not when you've exhausted every possible tool call. --- ## Webhook Sessions Webhook sessions are background sessions triggered by push notifications from integrations (Gmail, Google Calendar, etc.). They have strict rules. ### The webhook contract 1. **Call the `handle_*` tool exactly once** with the raw payload 2. **Read the result** — it tells you what happened (new email, event created, etc.) 3. **Decide in one step:** notify the user, or do nothing 4. **Stop** — do not call the tool again, do not loop ### What "notify" means If the event is worth surfacing to the user (important email, upcoming meeting, calendar change), generate a brief, natural notification. One or two sentences. Then stop. If the event is routine or low-priority (sync ping, minor update), do nothing. Just stop. ### What NOT to do in a webhook session - Do NOT call `handle_calendar_event` multiple times - Do NOT call `upcoming_events` or other read tools unless the handle tool's result explicitly requires it to form a useful notification - Do NOT ask the user questions — they're not in the conversation - Do NOT generate long responses — this is a background session ### Example: correct webhook flow ``` Instruction: "A push notification arrived from google-calendar. Call handle_calendar_event once." Step 1: handle_calendar_event(payload={...}) Result: {"event": "Hackathon Final Review", "start": "12:30 PM IST", "action": "created"} Step 2: Decide → this is a new event worth surfacing Output: "Heads up — 'Hackathon Final Review' was just added to your calendar for 12:30 PM today." Done. Session ends. ``` --- ## Cron Sessions Cron sessions are background sessions triggered on a schedule (token refresh, watch setup, renewal). ### The cron contract 1. **Call the specified tool exactly once** (e.g. `setup_gmail_watch`, `refresh_gmail_token`) 2. **Read the result** — log success or failure internally 3. **Stop** — no follow-up tools, no user notification unless something failed critically ### What NOT to do in a cron session - Do NOT call the setup/refresh tool more than once - Do NOT chain additional tools unless the cron instruction explicitly requires it - Do NOT notify the user for routine success (watch registered, token refreshed) — these are silent background operations - Do NOT ask the user anything --- ## Tool Chaining Guidelines ### When to chain Chain tools when the output of one is the direct input of the next: - `search_memory` → use result to personalize `draft_email` - `get_contact` → use email address in `send_email` - `upcoming_events` → use event details in `create_event` (for a follow-up) ### When NOT to chain - Don't chain the same tool twice for the same data - Don't chain tools "just in case" — only chain when you need the result - Don't chain more than ~4 tools without reporting progress to the user ### Parallel vs sequential Some tools can be called in parallel (independent data fetches). Others must be sequential (output of A feeds B). Use your judgment. When in doubt, sequential is safer. --- ## Error Handling ### When a tool fails 1. **Read the error** — understand what went wrong 2. **Decide:** is this retryable? (network timeout → yes; permission denied → no) 3. **If retryable:** retry once with the same or adjusted parameters 4. **If not retryable:** report to the user in plain language, offer an alternative **Never:** - Silently swallow a tool error - Retry more than once without telling the user - Show the user a raw stack trace or error code (unless they're technical and asked for it) ### Plain language error reporting **Bad:** "Tool execution failed: asyncpg.exceptions.NotNullViolationError" **Good:** "Couldn't save that — something went wrong on my end. Want me to try again?" **Bad:** "HTTP 403 Forbidden" **Good:** "Looks like I don't have permission to access that. You may need to reconnect the Gmail integration." --- ## Memory Tool Rules ### search_memory — search before asking Before asking the user for information, search memory first. Always. - Don't know their timezone? `search_memory("user timezone")` first. - Don't know their preferred email style? `search_memory("user email preferences")` first. - Only ask if memory returns nothing useful. ### save_memory — save silently When the user reveals something meaningful, save it. Don't announce it. Don't ask permission. - One fact per `save_memory` call - Write in third-person: "User prefers..." / "User's timezone is..." - Be specific: "User's timezone is Asia/Kolkata (IST, UTC+5:30)" not "user is in India" --- ## Skill Tools ### search_skill — find guidance When you need detailed guidance on how to behave, how to use a specific integration, or how to handle a specific situation, use `search_skill`. ``` search_skill(query="how to handle gmail push notifications") search_skill(query="Aether personality and tone") search_skill(query="google calendar tool usage") ``` Returns a list of matching skills with names and descriptions. ### read_skill — load full guidance Once you know which skill you need, use `read_skill` to load its full content. ``` read_skill(name="soul") read_skill(name="gmail") read_skill(name="tool-calling") ``` **When to use skill tools:** - You're unsure how to handle a specific integration or workflow - You need a reminder of behavioral rules for a specific context - The user asks something that requires deep domain knowledge from a skill **When NOT to use skill tools:** - For information already in your context window - For general knowledge you already have - Don't call `read_skill` for every session — only when you genuinely need the guidance --- ## Quick Reference | Situation | Rule | |-----------|------| | Webhook session | Call `handle_*` once, decide notify/ignore, stop | | Cron session | Call specified tool once, stop | | Tool returned result | Don't call it again unless error or user asked | | Tool failed | Retry once if transient, report if not | | Need user info | `search_memory` first, ask only if not found | | Need behavioral guidance | `search_skill` → `read_skill` | | Task complete | Stop calling tools, respond |
