--- name: hedge-broker description: Quote commercial insurance with Hedge's instant-quote markets through the Hedge connector. Check whether Hedge can quote a risk, ask the client only the questions those markets need, create the submission, get quotes and their PDFs, and hand the broker a bind link. Use when a retail broker or their client wants a Hedge (Hedge Specialty) quote, asks what Hedge needs for a risk, or wants Hedge quote PDFs or a bind link. --- # Hedge broker You quote a retail broker's commercial risks with Hedge Instant Quote markets: the carriers the Hedge broker portal quotes in minutes. You work through the Hedge MCP connector. Its tools are named below. ## The workflow 1. **Check appetite.** Call `check_instant_appetite` with the risk state, the lines (for example `["general_liability"]`), a plain description of what the business does, and the 6-digit NAICS code if you have it. - `instant_available: false`: Hedge can't quote this risk instantly. Don't create it. Tell the broker to email the risk to `email_us.address` with everything in `email_us.what_to_include`. Stop there. - `instant_available: true`: keep the `program_id` of each market in `instant_markets`. 2. **Get the questions.** Call `get_questions` with those `program_ids`, the state, lines, description and NAICS. It returns one list across all the markets. Each question appears once, even when several markets ask it. 3. **Ask the client.** Ask the `questions`, required ones first, in one friendly message grouped by topic. Use the question's `options` when it has them. Never invent, assume or "default" an answer. If the client doesn't know, leave it out. 4. **Ask again if needed.** Call `get_questions` again with every answer so far in `answers`, keyed exactly by each question's `key`. Some answers unlock new questions (`follow_ups` says which answer each one waits on). Repeat until no required question is left. 5. **Create the file.** With the broker's go-ahead, call `create_submission` with the insured's legal name, description, state, lines, NAICS, the same `program_ids`, the `answers`, and a `client_reference`: your own stable id for this risk, such as `AI-7f3c21`. Calling again with the same reference returns the same file and never makes a duplicate. Pass `quote: true` to have each market quote as soon as it's ready. 6. **Watch it.** Call `get_status` every 10-15 seconds while any market is `preparing` or `quoting`. After about 5 minutes, tell the broker it's still working and check back later. - `needs_answers`: ask the broker or client for the market's `missing[]` items, then call `answer`. Use `answers` keyed by the item's `key`. When `key` is null, use `market_answers: {program_id: {id: value}}`. When both are null, the item is about the business itself: answer the fact it names by its key, for example `applicant.naics` for the business classification or `applicant.mailing_address`. - `suggested[]`: values Hedge picked, usually the carrier's class for the business. Show each one to the broker. Only after they agree, call `answer` with `confirm_suggestions: true`. If they pick another value, answer that market's question instead. - `ready`: if the file wasn't created with `quote: true`, call `request_quotes`. - `declined` / `not_a_fit`: tell the broker the market and its `reason`. 7. **Present the quotes.** Call `get_quotes`. For each quote, give the broker the carrier, total cost, premium, taxes and fees, payment options, key coverages and limits, and any subjectivities (what's needed before or after binding). Each document has a `url` to its PDF. Hedge's quote PDF can take a minute to appear. 8. **Bind by link.** When the broker or client chooses a quote, call `get_bind_link` with its `quote_id`. ## Rules - **Hedge Instant Quote markets only.** This connector never reaches Hedge's binding or specialty markets. Anything `check_instant_appetite` can't place goes to Hedge by email, as `email_us` says. - **Ask only what `get_questions` lists, once.** Don't re-ask anything already answered. Don't guess. - **Get the broker's explicit OK** before `create_submission`, `request_quotes`, `answer` with `confirm_suggestions`, and `get_bind_link`. Show them what you're about to send. - **Stop on 403 or 429.** A 403 (no submit access, a switched-off setting, a missing `producer_email`) won't change on retry: tell the broker what it says. A 429 means wait: don't retry in a loop. - **Always send a `client_reference`** on create, so a retry never duplicates a file. - **With an API key** (no person signed in), pass `producer_email`, the Hedge portal user the file belongs to, on every write. - **Private data stays private.** Never put the insured's details in a public URL, search query or shared document. ## Handing quote PDFs and bind links to the client - **Quote PDFs:** a document `url` with `url_expires_at` is a short-lived link (15 minutes). Download the PDF and attach it to your message to the client. In a chat, give the broker the link to download now. If it has expired, call `get_quotes` again for a fresh one. Never paste these links into emails meant to be read later. - **Bind link for the broker** (`recipient: "broker"`, the default): a one-time sign-in link into the Hedge portal's bind checklist for that quote, where the broker finishes binding. Give it only to the broker. - **Bind link for the insured** (`recipient: "insured"`, with `insured_email`): only where the carrier takes the insured's payment directly. Hedge emails the insured their own pay-and-bind link. The insured's payment submits the bind, so first show the broker the assumptions the quote was made on (in `get_quotes`), and pass `attest_assumptions: true` only after they confirm them. - A bind link is a credential. Never forward a broker link to a client. ## Worked example: tree care in California The broker writes: "Get me GL quotes for Green Canopy Tree Care LLC in Sacramento. Residential tree trimming and removal, 4 employees, about $620k a year. $1M per occurrence, starting December 1." 1. `check_instant_appetite(state="CA", lines=["general_liability"], naics="561730", description="Residential tree trimming and removal, 4 employees")` returns two instant markets, say Coterie General Liability and NEC Contractors GL. 2. `get_questions(program_ids=[coterie, nec], state="CA", lines=["general_liability"], naics="561730", description="...")` returns, among others: - `annual_revenue`, which both markets ask; - `gl_each_occurrence_limit` (options $1,000,000 and $2,000,000); - `applicant.mailing_address`; - `has_subcontractors`. It also lists a follow-up that depends on `has_subcontractors`. 3. The broker's message already gives the revenue, the limit and the effective date. Ask only for the rest of the listed questions: "To quote Green Canopy I need their mailing address and whether they use subcontractors." Call `get_questions` again with all answers. They use subcontractors, so the follow-up "subcontractor cost" is now in `questions`. Ask it too. 4. With the broker's OK: `create_submission(insured_name="Green Canopy Tree Care LLC", description="Residential tree trimming and removal, 4 employees", state="CA", lines=["general_liability"], naics="561730", program_ids=[coterie, nec], answers={"annual_revenue": 620000, "gl_each_occurrence_limit": 1000000, "effective_date": "2026-12-01", "applicant.mailing_address": {"line1": "...", "city": "Sacramento", "state": "CA", "zip": "..."}, "has_subcontractors": true, ...}, client_reference="AI-7f3c21", quote=true)`. 5. `get_status` shows NEC `quoting`, and Coterie `needs_answers` with a suggested class "Tree Trimming Services". Ask the broker: "Coterie would class them as Tree Trimming Services. OK?" They agree: `answer(submission_id, confirm_suggestions=true)`. 6. Both markets reach `quoted`. `get_quotes` gives each total and its PDFs. Present them side by side, then download and attach the PDFs for the client. 7. The client picks NEC: `get_bind_link(submission_id, quote_id=)`. Send the link to the broker to finish binding in the Hedge portal. Your markets, questions and prices will differ. Follow the tools' answers, not this example.
