# IQRecomp ## Intelligent Qube — Native PC Recompilation IQRecomp is a native PC recompilation of **Intelligent Qube** for the original PlayStation. Instead of emulating the PlayStation hardware, IQRecomp recompiles the original game code into native PC code using the [PSXRecomp](https://github.com/mstan/psxrecomp) static recompilation framework. > **Status: Playable — Early Release** > **Current platform: Linux x86-64 / Steam Deck** The project is actively being developed toward a polished native PC release. --- ## Download The latest player-facing builds are available on the GitHub Releases page. **[Download the latest release →](../../releases/latest)** The current release is intended for: * Linux x86-64 * Steam Deck / SteamOS Windows and other platforms are not currently part of the first release. --- ## Getting Started ### Linux Download and extract the latest release. If necessary, make the executable executable: ```bash chmod +x IQRecomp ``` Then launch it: ```bash ./IQRecomp ``` ### Steam Deck IQRecomp runs natively on Steam Deck / SteamOS. The easiest way to get started is to launch it from Desktop Mode. You can also add the executable to Steam as a **Non-Steam Game** and launch it from Game Mode. Steam Deck-specific packaging and integration will continue to improve as development progresses. --- ## Game Data IQRecomp does **not** include the original Intelligent Qube game data. You must provide your own legally obtained copy of the game. The project does not distribute: * PlayStation disc images * BIN/CUE files * the original PS-X EXE * PlayStation BIOS files * copyrighted game assets * extracted game data Follow the instructions included with the release for the expected game-data location and format. **Do not redistribute your game data with IQRecomp.** --- ## Features The current release includes: * Native x86-64 execution * Recompiled PlayStation game code * Original gameplay logic * Native PC rendering * Configurable resolution * Anti-aliasing options * Graphics configuration * Runtime configuration * Linux support * Steam Deck / SteamOS support The goal is to preserve the original game while taking advantage of native PC execution and modern hardware. --- ## Current Status IQRecomp has progressed beyond a proof of concept and is now **playable as a native PC build**. ### Working * PlayStation executable analysis * Static recompilation * Native PC executable * Core game execution * Core gameplay * Puzzle and gameplay data handling * Graphics configuration * Resolution configuration * Anti-aliasing * Linux x86-64 build * Steam Deck / SteamOS support * Player-facing release build ### In Development * Improved FMV playback * Further rendering improvements * Geometry correction * Widescreen presentation * Expanded input configuration * Additional platform support * Improved release packaging Development status can change quickly as the project progresses. --- ## Known Issues ### Opening FMV The opening FMV currently has **choppy playback** in the native build. This does not affect gameplay. If you want to skip the opening video, press **Circle**. Improving FMV playback is planned for a future release. --- ## Reporting Issues If you encounter a problem, please include as much of the following as possible: * IQRecomp version * Linux distribution or SteamOS version * CPU and GPU * Steam Deck model, if applicable * Game region/version * What you were doing when the problem occurred * What you expected to happen * What actually happened * Terminal or log output, if available Screenshots and short recordings are especially useful for rendering problems. **Please do not upload copyrighted game files or disc images to issues.** --- # Technical Information The sections below are primarily for developers and people interested in the reverse-engineering work behind IQRecomp. ## How It Works IQRecomp uses static recompilation to convert the original PlayStation executable into native PC code. The general process is: 1. Analyze the original PlayStation executable. 2. Identify executable code and game functions. 3. Recompile the original MIPS code for the PC target. 4. Provide the required PlayStation runtime functionality. 5. Add IQ-specific compatibility and rendering work. 6. Build the result as a native PC application. This allows the game to run without emulating the original PlayStation CPU. --- ## Reverse Engineering A significant part of IQRecomp involves reverse engineering the original game and understanding how its code and data interact. Current research includes: * Main game loop * Puzzle and group generation * Puzzle dataset loading * Runtime puzzle structures * Cube state management * Cube attributes * Score and game-state transitions * Rendering state * Geometry generation * Camera and projection behavior * PlayStation GPU interaction One ongoing area of research is understanding how the original puzzle dataset is converted into the runtime structures used by the game. This work is being validated against the original executable and observed runtime behavior rather than relying solely on static assumptions. --- ## Rendering Rendering is one of the project's major areas of development. Current work includes: * Higher display resolutions * Anti-aliasing * Geometry correction * Perspective correction * Widescreen presentation * Camera and projection improvements * Frame-pacing improvements * Modern display output The intention is to improve the game's presentation while preserving its original gameplay and behavior. ### Widescreen Widescreen support is currently experimental. Static analysis has identified several potential aspect-ratio-related code paths. These are being validated against runtime behavior before being treated as final. --- # Building From Source ## Requirements Building IQRecomp requires: * Git * CMake * Ninja * GCC, Clang, or another supported compiler * Python 3 * PSXRecomp and its dependencies Clone the repository together with its submodules: ```bash git clone --recurse-submodules https://github.com/YOURNAME/IQRecomp.git cd IQRecomp ``` If the repository has already been cloned: ```bash git submodule update --init --recursive ``` Build instructions may change during development. See the repository documentation for the current development workflow. --- ## Project Structure IQRecomp is organized as a game-specific project built on top of PSXRecomp. The repository generally contains: * `psxrecomp/` — PSXRecomp framework * `src/` — IQ-specific source code * `include/` — IQ-specific headers * `config/` — configuration files * `tools/` — development and reverse-engineering tools * `docs/` — technical documentation * `CMakeLists.txt` — build configuration Original game data and generated files should not be committed to the repository. --- # Relationship to PSXRecomp IQRecomp is **not a fork of PSXRecomp**. It is a game-specific project built on top of the PSXRecomp framework. PSXRecomp provides the general PlayStation static-recompilation infrastructure, while IQRecomp contains the work specific to Intelligent Qube, including: * Reverse engineering * Game analysis * Configuration * Runtime integration * Compatibility fixes * Rendering work * PC-specific features Changes that are useful to multiple PlayStation recompilation projects should ideally be contributed to PSXRecomp itself. **[PSXRecomp →](https://github.com/mstan/psxrecomp)** --- # Legal Intelligent Qube and its original assets are copyrighted by their respective rights holders. IQRecomp is an independent reverse-engineering and recompilation project. It is **not affiliated with or endorsed by Sony Interactive Entertainment or the original developers or publishers of Intelligent Qube**. This project does not distribute the original game, disc images, BIOS files, or copyrighted game assets. Users are responsible for obtaining and using any required game data legally. --- # Credits ## PSXRecomp IQRecomp is built using the PSXRecomp static recompilation framework.
