To answer your points beyond what i changed in the text: Yes, the assumption that this is a complete end-to-end story from someone (AD-1) taking responsibility for sourcing the content to many end-users consuming the service is relevant because it allows us to constrain the scope/size of this document. If you think we should also have text for any of the current "out of scope" areas, i would be a lot happier if we could do this in BCPbis. > -3.2: Why does this section not rate a figure? I added to 4.3.2: The reason to specifically mention the need for AD-1 to initiate interactions with AD-2 (and use some account for that), as opposed to the opposite direction is based on the recommended workflow initiated by customers (see ): Customer contacts content source (part of AD-1), when AD sees the need to propagate the issue, it will interact with AD-2. I am somewhat hesitating to bring long & gory explanations why we choose this approach, because there are so many different reasons one could cite and it cold become quite long: -> Its the logical workflow with unicast content service. -> Its the workflow also in CDN, even specifically in CDNI -> Its logical that you start diagnostics from the application side and only once you figure out that the issue is NOT application, but network, you go down to network diagnostic. And you can start that usually only from the application sender side. -> You want to make operations for all the AD-2 lightweight. The idea is NOT for all AD-2 to become broadcasters with a virtual headend. Instead they just need to be involved in the transport layer and beyond that only into the pieces they want to. I have changed the first two paragraphs to hopefully set the context better: Successful delivery of applications via multicast between pairs of interconnecting AD's can be improved through the ability to exchange appropriate logs for various workflows - troubleshooting, accounting/billing, traffic/content optimization, market research and so on. Except when the log includes information about the IP multicast behavior in AD-2, this is not specific to IP multicast solutions but equally desirable in Unicast-content delivery collaboration collaboration across AD-1/AD-2 (e.g.: for CDN services). The following type of logs are well understood examples known to help support operations in AD-1 when provided by AD-2. This could be done as part of AD-1/AD-2 contracts: Let us know please if you insist on examples. detailing operational workflows can add quite a bit of text to the document. > The statements about compensation should be out of scope for an IETF document. In the end i tried to focus the description on the model that makes this closest to unicast, eg.: where the end-to-end application is in control and just gets network transport information from the other parties involved, eg.: AD-2 -> AD-1. So all the information collected via logs etc. to the extend that it is per-user is really only about the transport service and not the payload. Something which in unicast the content source would already have. The only privacy sensitive information directly related to multicast is really "who is watching what content" and i created a privacy consideration section for that aspect, pls. review. [ Side note: Personally i think there is a real bad amount of personal info collected by end-to-end applications, especially what i've seen in the past in content delivery for monetization strategies such as targeted advertisements and the like, but seemingly there is no place in the IETF where this is discussed (would have to be somehwere in ART). IETF only seems to obsess about protecting the sensitive information against third parties which is good but totally not sufficient. IMHO the likelyhood that in this setup the GRE tunnel is at times not used at all is fairly low. You wouldn't bother about setting up this tunnel in the first place if it wasn't expected to be used regularily. We did have i think 10 years ago an attempt to standardize multicast billing/accounting information exchange between SPs, alas those drafts never finished because they where somewhat ill-build (on the wrong protocols). This is my first BCP co-authoring, so its not clear to me how references have to inherit state based on the way they are referred to in a BCP (as opposed to being use in conjunction with a MUST/SHOULD in a standards track RFC where i do understand this).
