# Notices ## Third-party artwork ### Chess piece artwork - **What**: the twelve Staunton-style chess piece SVGs embedded in `client.js` (six pieces, light and dark). - **Where from**: the Sashité chess asset set — (retrieved 2026-10-15). - **Statement on that page**: *"Free, **public domain** SVG assets for Chess."* The assets page introduces them as the exact sets the Sashité play apps ship. - **What was changed**: nothing about the drawings. Each piece's `` elements and their own `fill` values were extracted, in document order, into the `PIECE_ART` table in `tools/piece-art.js`; the original files are kept verbatim under `pieces/`. The only change is the container — one `.svg` per piece becomes one table — plus the surrounding viewBox, which is the source's own `0 0 4096 4096`. - **How to reproduce or re-fetch**: `tools/fetch-pieces.mjs` downloads the set and regenerates `tools/piece-art.js`. Nothing is typed in by hand. - **Caveat, stated plainly**: the Sashité *site footer* carries a blanket "All rights reserved" line for the site itself, while the assets page explicitly dedicates these SVG assets to the public domain. That is the publisher's own declaration about these files, and it is recorded here so the decision is auditable rather than assumed. If a stricter provenance is wanted, swap the set for the Openclipart Staunton silhouettes (), whose host dedicates everything it publishes to the public domain, and rerun the preview and build. ## What is NOT used - **Lichess's own piece sets** (cburnett and friends) are deliberately not used. They carry GPL/CC-BY-SA terms and are somebody else's artwork; the brown board palette only follows a widespread chess convention, and no lichess file, sprite, or brand asset is included here. - **`HollowLeaf1981/ChessPieces`** (MIT) was evaluated and not used: its sets are stylised rather than Staunton. ## This project's own code Everything else in this directory — the rules engine, the opponent search, the lichess client, the panel, the styles, the tests — is original to this plugin.
