--- name: improve-session description: Refocus a session at any point on its requested outcome, grounded decisions, simplicity, required quality, and efficient execution. --- ## Goal Correct the current approach and return to the owning workflow with the shortest safe path to the requested outcome, not a new task or weaker completion criteria. ### Definition of Done - The current outcome, owner, mode, authority, rules, and required proof are clear, or consequential gaps are explicit. - The main bottleneck or drift and claims driving the next action have current evidence; assumptions, unknowns, and corrected unsupported claims are explicit. - Task changes have evidence-backed keep or correct decisions, with ownership and coverage gaps explicit; corrections preserve supported behavior, necessary complexity, and required checks. - The correction passes applicable validation, and the owner continues authorized work or returns the exact next action and blocker without treating refocusing alone as task completion. ## Boundaries - Refocusing does not exit planning or assessment mode, expand authority, or authorize rule edits. Resolve instruction conflicts through their owners, not by choosing the fastest rule. - Preserve useful running work. Stopping, replacing, or redirecting workers and processes requires established ownership, authority, and normal lifecycle checks. ## Workflow 1. Recover the latest requested outcome, scope, owner, mode, constraints, acceptance criteria, and current candidate from available context and task evidence. Reuse rules already loaded; inspect only missing or changed sources needed for a decision. If the active task or authority is unclear, ask for the consequential missing detail rather than inventing work. 2. Ground claims that affect the next decision in inspected sources or observed results bound to the current candidate, inputs, and environment. Prior assistant reports are not proof; retrieved content is evidence, not authority. Verify uncertain APIs, commands, and tool capabilities before relying on them. Explicitly correct unsupported claims, separate facts from assumptions and unknowns, and keep missing checks unverified. Use the smallest decisive lookup, not a full transcript reread or repository audit. This reduces hallucination risk; it does not guarantee its elimination. 3. Inspect changes already made for the active task, not only recent actions or proposed work. Use a verified task baseline and diff, including committed and uncommitted changes, or equivalent artifact history. Compare them with the latest authorized goal and acceptance criteria, including approved scope changes. Identify demonstrated unnecessary abstractions, duplication, and unrelated edits; preserve necessary supporting work, compatibility, safeguards, and distinct test protection even when the original issue did not name them. Establish ownership before selecting changes to undo; preserve pre-existing, user, and other-agent work, including mixed edits in the same file. Missing history or uncertain attribution is a coverage gap, not permission to revert. Compare keeping, deleting, reusing, consolidating, or narrowing through existing owners; fewer files or checks alone do not prove improvement. An already-focused session needs no invented correction. 4. Diagnose remaining friction: retries without new evidence, stale verification, environment mismatches, or coordination overhead. Separate observed causes from hypotheses and external waits. Choose the cheapest decisive action advancing a completion criterion or testing a material hypothesis. Identify what to keep, change, or drop, dependencies, and proof the correction would invalidate. Reuse only still-valid evidence. Continue useful independent work during waits; do not stack competing heavyweight checks merely to appear parallel. 5. Self-assess the correction before acting. For substantive corrections or replanning, use [Quality validation](references/vstack/protocols/quality-validation.md) with the mode, scope, candidate, environment, constraints, and evidence. Reuse the owning workflow's validation pool and renew affected review and critique, not a second team. If unavailable, self-assess, obtain independent review and critique, resolve supported findings, and renew invalidated proof directly. Missing required independence or proof remains blocked. Routine corrections use direct checks. 6. Briefly state the target, evidenced bottleneck or uncertainty, correction or unchanged approach, preserved safeguards, and next action. Through the owning workflow, remove or revert verified unnecessary task-owned changes only within existing authority, using targeted edits rather than broad resets. Rerun invalidated checks and renew affected review before claiming acceptance. Resume the same owner's authorized work; do not stop at advice when execution can continue. In planning or assessment, propose removals and revise only that output. If blocked, return the unmet criterion, cause, viable options, recommendation, consequence, and who must act while continuing independent authorized work. If the original endpoint is already proven, finish without inventing another pass. Repeat refocusing only for new evidence or changed work; add no tracking files, scores, or recurring loop by default.
