It faces **due east**, so that on the morning of the spring equinox the sun rises directly in front of it. The **conventional Egyptological dating** attributes it to the reign of the pharaoh **Khafre** (Fourth Dynasty, c. 2500 BCE) and treats it as part of his pyramid-and-causeway complex — the consensus position through most of the twentieth century. That dating rests on the monument's association with Khafre's causeway and valley temple and on a stylistic reading of the head; it has never been fixed by a direct, datable inscription naming the builder. ## The water-erosion thesis The principal geological challenge to the Khafre attribution was developed by **Robert Schoch**, a geologist at Boston University, from the early 1990s, working with the independent Egyptologist **John Anthony West**. Schoch argued that the weathering on the Sphinx's body and, especially, on the walls of the trench (the "enclosure") cut around it shows deep vertical fissuring and rounded, undulating profiles characteristic of prolonged exposure to **rainfall runoff** — not the wind-and-sand erosion of the arid dynastic climate. Since the Giza region has been desert since roughly 3000 BCE, water-erosion of that depth would require the monument to predate the desertification, pushing its carving back (conservatively) to 7000–5000 BCE, and on the more aggressive reading toward 9000 BCE or earlier. Mainstream Egyptology and much of academic geology reject the analysis — proposing rain during the dynastic period, salt-crystallisation weathering, or variable rock quality as alternatives — and the debate has not been settled on technical grounds to either side's satisfaction. What is not in dispute is that the enclosure walls are weathered in a way the arid-only model struggles to explain. ## The astronomical argument A second line of argument is precessional, developed by **Robert Bauval** and Adrian Gilbert in *The Orion Mystery* (1994) and carried to a mass audience by {% wiki(slug="graham-hancock") %}Graham Hancock{% end %} in *Fingerprints of the Gods* (1995) and *Magicians of the Gods* (2015). Its logic is geometric. The Sphinx faces due east and marks the equinox sunrise; a monument in the form of a lion is a natural marker for the age in which the equinox sun rose *against the stars of the lion*. In the epoch of Khafre — deep in the [Age of Taurus](/timeline/age-of-taurus/) — a leonine equinox-marker answers to nothing in the sky. Project the sky back by {% wiki(slug="precession") %}precession{% end %}, however, and in the Age of Leo the equinox sun rose in Leo: the lion-bodied monument would face, as Hancock puts it, "his own celestial counterpart." Bauval's Orion correlation supplies what Hancock calls the second hand of the "Giza clock" — the three pyramids mirroring Orion's Belt at the Belt's precessional low point, circa 10,500 BCE. The alignment is meaningful only during the centuries the pairing was actually observable, which is the argument's point. The mainstream response is that the human head is out of proportion with the leonine body — too small — which is usually read as evidence that an original lion head was **recarved** into a pharaoh's face, and that the Giza-as-star-map claims are pattern-projection onto monuments securely dated to the Fourth Dynasty by their archaeological context. **Herodotus**, visiting in the fifth century BCE, was told by his Egyptian informants that the monuments were of great antiquity; he describes the pyramids at length but does not mention the Sphinx at all — which some read as evidence it was then buried to the neck in sand, as it has been for most of its history. ## In the Wheel of Heaven framework The corpus takes the older dating seriously without insisting on it. On the Wheel of Heaven reading the Sphinx is a **pre-Flood monument** — built during the [Age of Leo](/timeline/age-of-leo/) (c. 11,010–8,850 BCE on the corpus's reckoning) or shortly after, at a level of technical capability the conventional record does not allow so early, and inherited by the dynastic Egyptians, who maintained it, associated it with their pharaohs, and in some cases modified it (the recarved head, on this reading, is a genuine later alteration of a much older monument). Its lion form commemorates the precessional age of its making; its eastward orientation captures the equinox; and Schoch's wetter-climate dating and the Bauval–Hancock Leo alignment converge, on the corpus's reading, on the same deep epoch. The Sphinx therefore functions in the framework as its **most concrete single piece of physical evidence** for the compressed-chronology claim — a surviving stone monument that, if the alternative dating holds, was raised by human beings in commemoration of the very age in which the corpus places their creation. It is read alongside {% wiki(slug="gobekli-tepe") %}Göbekli Tepe{% end %}, whose undisputed 9600 BCE date makes the same point without needing the archaeoastronomy.
