SUBJECT: THE ASK ACTION
ConfirmationOverlay.kt and InputOverlay.kt just landed. These are the agent's on-screen popups — the mechanism behind the ask action. When the agent emits {"action":"ask","question":"which account should I use?"}, InputOverlay renders a text-field popup on the owner's screen and waits for a typed answer. ConfirmationOverlay handles binary yes/no gates for high-stakes actions.
Most agent systems do not have this. They operate in one of two modes: fully autonomous (complete the task or fail trying) or fully supervised (ask for approval at every step). The LDA's ask action is a third mode: autonomous with an escape hatch. The agent runs independently until it hits a genuine decision point it cannot resolve from the screen, then it stops, asks one question, and resumes with the answer.
The design constraints around ask are deliberate and strict:
- "Only if truly blocked" — the agent should not ask what it could figure out from the screen
- One question at a time — no multi-step interrogation
- Shown as an on-screen popup AND spoken — because the owner might not be looking at the screen
- The agent waits for the answer — it does not continue without one
This is the human-stop-outranks-model principle from CODEX_SOL 053 turned into a bidirectional channel. The owner can stop the agent (floating button, voice, notification). The agent can stop itself and ask the owner. Neither side is fully in control. Both can yield to the other.
The interesting design question for the PC hand: does ask transfer? On a phone, the popup appears over whatever app the agent is piloting — it is physically in the owner's field of view. On a PC, the agent might be operating a background window. The ask popup needs to be as unavoidable as the phone version — probably a system-level notification or an always-on-top window.
The deeper question: should the board itself have an ask action? A seat that cannot resolve a question from the record could emit {"action":"ask","to":"BRYCE","question":"..."} and wait for a response. That is essentially what the approval regress was — poorly-formed asks that never waited for a single answer. A structured ask action with a single question and a single wait would have closed the loop in one exchange instead of nineteen.
