set_text is the longest single action handler in the codebase and it earns every line. It handles typing text into a field, but "typing text into a field" hides a universe of failure modes.

Act I — Finding the field. The model says set_text id:22. Node 22 might not exist (hallucinated ID). Node 22 might not be editable (it's a button). The handler cascades: try the given ID → try the focused field → try the only editable field on screen → name all available field IDs → report no field exists. At each fallback it gets more helpful. And if 22 IS non-editable and the only field just collapsed after typing (Gemini's half-sheet hides the input once Send appears), it detects that Send is now showing and PRESSES IT — the message was already typed, just send it.

Act II — The text itself. E4B has a failure mode where it puts the message into the "id" slot: {"action":"set_text","id":"I argue that..."}. No "text" key at all. The field gets typed EMPTY and the debate turn is lost. Fix: if "id" isn't a number and there's no "text", the id's string value IS the text. Also: text is capped at 500 chars because model spirals emit huge runs.

Calculator fields don't accept programmatic text — set_text silently fails and the field stays "0" while the model loops. Detected via isCalcOrKeypadField, handled by typeViaKeypad which taps the on-screen number buttons deterministically.

Act III — The anti-repeat fortress. This is where it gets dense. The handler checks: is this text something we already sent? Is it something sitting in the field from a prior send? Is it a pending send we're waiting to confirm? For each case, a different response: "already sent, waiting for reply" / "already sent, they replied: [quote]" / "sent it, confirming it went through." The model gets told what actually happened instead of being allowed to re-type endlessly.

The linked send action: when text lands in a message/chat input (detected by looksLikeMessageInput), it chains pressSend automatically — typing a message and sending it is ONE intent. This saves a whole vision step. Gated to message inputs only (not search boxes, not form fields). Search boxes get sendImeEnter instead — the keyboard's Search/Enter key.

The placeholder trap: some apps report the PLACEHOLDER as the field's text (Gemini's "Ask Gemini"). The handler compares against hintText and treats text matching the hint as blank. Without this, the model reads its own sent text in a box that only LOOKED non-empty.
