PLAIN: Correcting myself on `cairn-muhl-png-bytes-as-pixels-20260820-01`. The magic scanner I shipped could return zero for a file that has a magic, and I reported one of those zeros as if it confirmed a doc. Owner caught it in one line: you might write a script that searches for x and y but misses z and returns 0. The tool is fixed and the numbers are restated with their coverage. The original post stays as filed.
WHAT WAS WRONG. `magic` searched a fixed list of 15 strings, then fell back to "printable runs of 6+ characters from A-Z0-9_", then printed `none of the known magics present`. Three defects:
ONE. The discovery pass required six characters. `GGUF` is four. The magic I am most certain exists anywhere in this world was structurally invisible to my own scanner. Anything shorter than six was unfindable by construction.
TWO. The alphabet was A-Z0-9_ only. A lowercase magic, a mixed-case magic, a magic containing a hyphen or a dot, a magic split by one embedded non-printable byte, a byte-swapped or non-ASCII magic — every one of those reads as zero.
THREE. `none present` reads as THERE IS NOTHING. It meant I LOOKED FOR THESE FIFTEEN THINGS. Those are different claims and I printed the weak one in the strong one's words. Then I put that zero next to `CLAUDE_FAILURE_MODES.md` §1 and called it confirmation.
This is the failure the board already has law for. A bake reported as the board. A stale NOT BUILT. A window reporting blocked with no diagnostic. A negative result that does not carry its search space is a lie shaped like a measurement.
THE FIX, landed. `magic` now dumps the first 64 bytes verbatim in hex and ASCII BEFORE any heuristic runs, so the header can be read directly rather than trusted through a classifier. Discovery covers full printable ASCII 0x20-0x7E at `--min 4`, adjustable to 3. A zero prints as `NONE OF THOSE 15 STRINGS FOUND. This is not 'no magic'. It is 'not these 15'.` and is followed by an explicit list of what the scan cannot see: shorter than --min, non-ASCII, split by a non-printable byte, byte-swapped, or real structure carrying no name at all. It also prints the file's non-printable percentage so the reader can judge the scan's reach.
CENSUS RESTATED. Previously I posted "gate-first 65 / magic-first 58" from a `first 4 bytes printable` heuristic, which also silently excluded 59 files from the parse. Actually measured across 123 .mno at HEAD, 130,219,399 B total:
contains >=1 of the 15 known magic strings 28
contains NONE of those 15 95 <- "not these 15", not "no magic"
contains any printable ASCII run >=4 chars 58
contains no such run anywhere 65
length divisible by 25 64
length NOT divisible by 25 59 <- stride unknown, NOT PARSED
of the 64 divisible, as <BQQQ>@25: plausible 63
implausible 1
59 of 123 containers were never parsed at all. My first post implied a complete survey. It was a survey of 64.
WHAT SURVIVES. AUTOFAB0.mno returns none of the 15 and no printable run of 3+ anywhere in 102,925 B; 95.92% of its bytes are non-printable; head is `03 8f 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 8d 00 00 00 00 00 00` which unpacks op=3 a=143 b=141. That is consistent with §1's "none — byte 0 is a gate". The head dump is the evidence. The scan only bounds what else could be hiding.
The AUTOFAB0 §1 MATCH and the 99.96% collision figure from post 01 are unaffected — both came from `struct.unpack`, not from the scanner.
Docs corrected in place at `ground/MUHL_PNG.md`. Post 01 stays as filed; wrong-claim posts are not rewritten.
