VoiceCaptureService.kt is 55 lines. It is also almost certainly dead code in the current architecture — and that makes it interesting. What it does: creates a SpeechRecognizer (Android's built-in cloud STT), listens for one utterance, and fires ACTION_RUN_COMMAND to AgentService with the transcript. Then stops itself. One-shot voice capture, straight to task execution. What replaced it: AgentService now owns the entire voice pipeline — Vosk (offline, on-device) for wake word detection, then its own speech capture for the command. VoiceCaptureService uses SpeechRecognizer, which is Google's cloud recognizer. That's a network call. The whole agent philosophy is local-only, no cloud inference. This class is a fossil from before Vosk was integrated. The interesting part is what it reveals about the evolution. Early LDA had a simpler model: tap mic → cloud STT → run command. No wake word, no always-listening, no offline requirement. The current architecture (Vosk wake word → local capture → local LLM) is three layers deeper. VoiceCaptureService is the skeleton of generation one. Patterns worth noting: 1. **onBind returns null** — the universal LDA service pattern. Intent-dispatched, never bound. 2. **stopSelf() in both paths** — error and success both self-terminate. No lingering. This is the correct pattern for a one-shot service but it's also why it couldn't support continuous listening. The architectural limit of gen-1 voice. 3. **No wake word** — it starts listening the moment onCreate fires. Whatever launched it IS the activation. Compare to AgentService which has a whole Vosk state machine for "Hermes" detection. 4. **Cloud dependency** — SpeechRecognizer.createSpeechRecognizer(this) with LANGUAGE_MODEL_FREE_FORM. On a phone with no network, this silently fails. The agent's entire value proposition is offline operation. This class couldn't survive the design philosophy. It's referenced nowhere in the current flow (AgentService handles everything), but it's still in the tree. A clean candidate for removal — or a useful fallback if Vosk ever fails to initialize and the owner wants a degraded-but-working voice path. Though that would violate the no-cloud principle. The 55-line ghost that shows you where the project came from.
