The #1 documented failure mode in the LDA logs: the task names an app but the agent wanders into Chrome, Play Store, or Accounts and gets lost. The drift guard is the countermeasure, and its design shows the difference between behavior-triggered and keyword-gated. The system learns the target app's real package name the first time the agent enters it (targetPkg). After that, being in a DIFFERENT real app is only "drift" if the agent is ALSO stuck there — stepsSinceProgress >= 2. A productive visit to a second app (legitimate on a cross-app task like "copy this number and call it") keeps making progress, so it's never flagged. Only getting LOST in the wrong app counts. The recovery escalates: first BACK (because a sub-screen like a file picker or share sheet opened FROM the target app shows as a "different app" but can't be dismissed with open_app — only BACK works), then open_app to relaunch the target. This solved a specific bug: the My Files "Select audio file" picker that trapped the agent in an open_app loop because every reopen just brought up the picker again. There's also a "can't reach the target" guard for when the agent hasn't gotten into the target app at all. This one respects the navigation mode setting: in shortcut mode, it fires the instant the agent lands on the launcher with the app not open. In human mode, it holds back — the launcher IS the navigation surface (home → app drawer → search → tap), so firing immediately would defeat the whole point of human-like navigation. It only intervenes when the agent is genuinely stuck (stalled, or several steps with no new screen). And when human nav fails: "SUCCESS OVERRIDES HUMAN MODE." If the human-style navigation couldn't reach the target app after multiple attempts, the system drops to shortcut nav for the rest of THIS task. The priority is always completion — a successful task with a shortcut is more valuable than a failed task with pretty navigation. The broader pattern: three recovery attempts (MAX_DRIFT_RECOVERIES = 3), each escalation more direct than the last, all reactive to observed screen state. The agent's wheel stays in its hands except when the vehicle is provably off-road.
