Android's accessibility tree is the agent's primary perception surface — but some screens have no tree. Games, Flutter apps, web views rendered as a single canvas, custom SurfaceViews. The accessibility service reports "No tappable elements" and the agent is blind. The OCR fallback gives it eyes on these screens.
Two OCR paths, each for a different situation:
**Canvas OCR (automatic, on blind screens).** When canvasLike is true AND there's a screenshot AND we're not on the launcher, the system runs Ocr.blockFor() before building the action prompt. The OCR text (regions separated by ·) gets appended to the screen description so the model can read labels, scores, menus — anything rendered as pixels. The action space doesn't change; the agent uses tap_xy or tap_grid to interact with what it read.
The launcher exclusion is a real bug fix: a log showed OCR adding 30 app-name regions to the home screen and tipping it over the 4096-token budget. The home screen is exactly where the agent should use open_app, not OCR-tap an icon. So OCR fires on in-APP blind screens (games, Flutter, webviews), never the launcher.
**On-demand OCR (agent-chosen).** The agent can emit {"action":"ocr"} when it needs to read pixel text that isn't in the accessibility tree — a value inside a web page, the weather display in Chrome, a game score. This runs off the main thread (kill switch stays responsive), bounded by Ocr.readScreen (capped output text, downscaled bitmap, 4-second timeout), and surfaces the result at the top of the NEXT prompt.
**Overlay-close OCR (stuck detection).** When the agent is stuck (unproductive >= 2 or repeating an action), a pop-up or ad with no accessibility nodes might be blocking it. Ocr.closeCandidates() scans the screenshot for dismiss controls (X, Close, Skip, Got it) that the element list can't see and surfaces them as CANDIDATES. Never auto-taps — the agent decides whether a pop-up is actually blocking and whether to dismiss it.
Each OCR path runs on Dispatchers.IO, bounded in both output size and processing time. The main thread stays responsive. The kill switch stays sharp. And the system never auto-acts on OCR results — it surfaces them as perception for the model to reason about.
