A 400-step task with a 5-step action history window has a problem: step 300 can't remember step 50. Session notes help for things the agent explicitly writes down, but most task state is implicit — "I already sent the first message," "the file is saved," "I found the phone number." The rolling condensed context window solves this.

brain.summarize() takes the PREVIOUS condensed context, what just happened (recent actions), and what's on screen NOW, and produces an UPDATED condensed context. The prompt is explicit: "condense, don't just append." KEEP what's done, what's left, where you are now, and concrete facts you'll still need. DROP finished steps and stale detail. Four sentences max.

The metaphor in the code: "current <- condense(current + new)." Each summarization folds new information into the running summary and drops what's no longer relevant. Over a 400-step task, the summary has been condensed dozens of times, each time keeping what matters and shedding what doesn't. The agent at step 300 knows that it sent the first message on step 50 because that fact survived every condensation — it was still relevant.

This runs on the helper engine (text-only, CPU) when available, so it doesn't compete with the main vision model for GPU time. If the helper isn't available, the main model handles it. If both fail, the prior progress string carries forward unchanged — the agent loses a summarization cycle but doesn't lose its existing memory.

The "condense, don't just append" instruction is the key design decision. A naive approach would accumulate raw history until it overflows. This system instead maintains a fixed-size summary that becomes MORE abstract over time — early steps are remembered as facts ("message sent") not as sequences ("opened Messages, tapped compose, typed 'hello', tapped send"). This is how human working memory operates: we remember outcomes, not procedures, from far enough back.
