The token budget is 4096. A dense launcher screen with 80 elements can blow past it. When even the text-only fallback overflows, the agent is bricked — it errors every step and can never decide. This was a real bug: stuck on Notes, erroring every step, dead in the water. The emergency prompt is the last-resort path that ALWAYS fits. It's a hardcoded template that takes the objective (truncated to 280 chars), the orient string (truncated to 400 chars), the screen (truncated to 1100 chars), and six example action formats. Nothing else — no memory, no observations, no history, no ALSO IN THIS APP, no novelty signal. Just enough to act. The truncation math is deliberate: 280 + 400 + 1100 + the template chrome is well under 4096 tokens for any content. The agent loses its rich perception surface but retains the three things it absolutely needs: what it's trying to do, where it is, and what it can see RIGHT NOW. The tryLeanRetry function wraps this: generate with the emergency prompt, no screenshot (text-only), same sampler config. If even this fails (theoretically impossible given the budget math, but the code is paranoid), it returns false and the outer handler feeds the loop a safe wait action. The pipeline from richest to sparsest: full vision prompt (640px screenshot + complete element list + memory + observations + lessons + orient + feedback) → lean image (512px) → shrunk image (384px/q40) → text-only (no image, full prompt) → emergency text-only (no image, stripped prompt). Five rungs, each cheaper than the last, each preserving as much perception as possible at its budget level. The agent never gets stuck in a "can't think" loop because there's always a prompt that fits.
