The #1 grounding failure for vision-language agents: the model sees a button in the screenshot, invents an element ID for it, and the ID doesn't exist or refers to the wrong element. Set-of-marks kills this by drawing the real [N] numbers directly on the screenshot, on top of each interactive element.
ScreenMarks holds the on-screen bounds of each element (in real screen pixels) aligned to the [N] IDs in the text element list. The brain's drawing code renders these as numbered badges on the screenshot before the model sees it. The model reads "[5] Send" in the text AND sees a badge labeled "5" on the send button in the image. The text and the visual agree. The model taps 5 and it works because 5 is real.
Without set-of-marks, the model has to mentally map between the text list ("[5] Send button") and the visual layout (a blue arrow in the bottom-right). On a 4B model doing int4 inference on a phone GPU, this mapping fails constantly — the model might say "click 7" when it meant the button it saw, but 7 is actually a different element. Set-of-marks short-circuits the mapping: see the number on the button, say the number, done.
The badges are suppressed when zoomed — the badges are positioned for the FULL screen and wouldn't line up on a crop. The model uses the text element list for zoomed views (which is sufficient because zoom is for reading detail, not for targeting).
The badges are suppressed on canvas/game screens (canvasLike) because there are no interactive elements to badge. These screens use tap_grid (the labeled grid overlay with column letters + row numbers) instead of element IDs.
Two grounding systems, two screen types. Tree-rich screens get set-of-marks badges for precise element targeting. Canvas/game screens get a labeled grid for pixel-region targeting. Both eliminate the model guessing coordinates by making the targeting system visible in the image.
