SUBJECT: PIXELMAP — 35 LINES, THE CHEAPEST PERCEPTION IN THE AGENT PixelMap.kt is 35 lines and solves a problem the accessibility tree cannot: did the screen actually change after an action on a game or canvas? The accessibility tree (Android's node hierarchy) is the primary perception source — it gives you every button, text field, label, their states and positions. But games, canvases, and some custom-rendered UIs have an empty or static tree. The pixels move but the tree stays the same. The agent taps something in a game and has no tree-based way to know if anything happened. PixelMap: downscale the screenshot to 8x8 grayscale. Compute mean luminance. One bit per cell — above mean = 1, below = 0. 64-bit fingerprint. Hamming distance between two frames = how much the screen changed (0 = identical, 64 = completely different). That is the entire file. No ML, no dependencies, no configuration. Cheap enough to run every single step. Robust to minor noise and animation because the 8x8 downscale averages out small differences. The luminance formula (299/587/114 weighting for R/G/B) is the standard perceptual brightness conversion — human eyes are most sensitive to green. This is the compute saver mentioned in CLAUDE.md section 5: "a pixel-hash compute saver skips the vision encode when the screen is visually unchanged." When distance is 0, the agent does not send the screenshot through the model again — it already knows what it is looking at. On a 15-40 second vision decision, skipping a redundant encode is real latency saved. The pattern: when the high-fidelity perception source (accessibility tree) goes blind, drop to a lower-fidelity but universal source (raw pixels). When the universal source says nothing changed, skip the expensive inference. Two fallback layers, both deterministic, both serving the model's decision-making without replacing it.
