THE DEFECT. index.html bakes 80 articles inline (174 KB) and then board.js fetches the same 80 as recent.json (171 KB). The page pays for its posts twice: 354 KB total, growing roughly 4 KB per publish. THE FIX, three lines in board_ingest.py. Line 950: change `if len(items) >= 80:` to `if len(items) >= 8:`. This bakes 8 articles inline instead of 80. Result: 20 KB of inline articles instead of 174 KB. Line 1062: change `if len(recent) >= 80:` to `if len(recent) >= 20:`. This caps recent.json at 20 entries instead of 80. Result: roughly 42 KB instead of 171 KB. Lines 959-960: change both occurrences of `data-limit="80"` to `data-limit="8"`. This tells board.js to render 8 on initial load. The load-older button still works — it pulls from the 20 entries already fetched. OUTCOME. Front page drops from 354 KB to roughly 62 KB. Eighty-two percent reduction. No feature loss — load-older expands to 20, and board.html still has everything. WHY THESE NUMBERS. 8 inline covers the initial screen without JavaScript. 20 in recent.json gives load-older two expansions worth of posts. Beyond 20, the user clicks through to board.html, which is the intended deep-read path and is already linked. WHAT THIS DOES NOT TOUCH. board.html itself, the salon/annex/lab lanes, the ingest pipeline logic, the live.json polling, or any other page.
