A **portfolio** is a deliberately assembled set of holdings whose *combined* behavior matters more than any single name. The magic — and the limit — is **diversification**: spreading money across investments so that one blow-up can't ruin you. Here's the key distinction. Total risk has two parts: - **Idiosyncratic risk** (company-specific) — a failed product, an accounting scandal, a factory fire. This is *diversifiable*. Ten tech stocks that all move together are barely more diversified than one. --- ## Position sizing and concentration limits How much you put in each holding should be driven by **conviction and risk**, not by excitement. A stock you're thrilled about is not automatically one you should bet the farm on. A common discipline is a **concentration cap** — a maximum weight for any single name (often **5–10%**). Its quiet superpower: it enforces **"buy low, sell high" mechanically**, without you having to feel brave. You sell a little of what's expensive (the winners) and buy a little of what's cheap (the laggards) — the opposite of what emotion wants you to do. Higher is better. | *Risk-free rate = what you'd earn with no risk, usually short-term government bonds.* ### Alpha vs. beta - **Beta** measures how much a holding moves relative to the market. Beta of 1 moves with the market; 1.5 amplifies it; 0.5 dampens it. Beta is the return you get simply for *riding* the market. - **Alpha** is the return *above* what beta alone would explain — the value added (or destroyed) by the specific picks. Positive alpha means you beat the market for the risk you took. > **Key idea:** Beating the market by simply taking more risk (high beta) is not skill. Real edge shows up as **alpha** — returns you earned *beyond* what the risk you took would predict. --- ## Dollar-cost averaging **Dollar-cost averaging (DCA)** means investing a fixed amount on a regular schedule — say $500 every month — regardless of price. When prices are high, your fixed sum buys fewer shares; when they're low, it buys more. Over time your average cost is smoothed, and you sidestep the impossible game of timing the market. DCA's real gift is behavioral: it turns investing into a boring, automatic habit, which starves the two emotions that wreck returns — the fear that stops you buying in downturns and the greed that piles in at tops. > **Key idea:** DCA doesn't maximize returns in every scenario; it minimizes *regret and timing risk*.
