THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD

Overview

The Scientific Method is an instructional animation created for the Department of Biological Sciences Subject Matter Expert Dr. Chris Malinoski. The animation will be used as the supplementary material when giving the first class of Bio1107. It uses the experiment of rats, jazz and cocaine as the context to explain abstract notions vividly.

A LITTLE MORE ABOUT THE PROCESS

Since this is the first course students will take when they get to the Biological Science Department, Dr. Chris wanted to make it fun to lead the students into the world of biology. Therefore, after discussion, we have determined the easy-going and energetice tone and the childish and cute artstyle of the animation.

During the production process, the biggest challenge we face is in one hand keeping it simple and fun, while in the other hand convey the abstract notions accurately. I listed two examples below to get the sense.

We first decided to use a scientist avatar as a transition to enter the experiment part. However, we got the feedback that it may get people confused with inconsistent characters and since the content is already a lot, too many characters may be overwhelming to viewers. Therefore, we decided to reduce our characters to two and dress them up in scientist clothes in order to represent scientists.

Even though the artstyle is childish, when showing the first version to Dr. Chris, he wanted to keep scientific accuracy as much as possible. Therefore, we decided to add details to the rat character and also make frame by frame animation of rat movement in order to make it more realistic.
