At the closing of [Gateways 2026](https://sciencegateways.org/gateways2026) in Washington, DC, we
announced that Gateways 2027 will take place in San Diego, hosted by the San Diego Supercomputer
Center (SDSC) at UC San Diego. I am honored to serve as chair of the conference, and I could not
be more excited to bring it home to the community that makes it what it is.

## A conference for and by the community

Gateways is organized by [SGX3](https://sciencegateways.org), the NSF Center of Excellence for
science gateways led by Sandra Gesing, as the central community gathering of the science gateway
ecosystem. It is not a conference with a fixed program that the audience attends: it is a
gathering that the community owns, and it only works when the community shows up and helps shape
it. The program committee, the talks, the keynotes, and the special sessions all come from people
like you: the researchers, developers, and service providers who build and use science gateways.

That is why I want to be explicit about my goal for Gateways 2027. More than anything, this
edition should be an open invitation to participate. If you have ideas, experience, or energy to
contribute, there is a place for you in the program, and we want to hear from you.

## What to expect in San Diego

Beyond being the home of SDSC and the UC San Diego Halıcıoğlu School of Data Science and
Computing, San Diego has plenty to offer attendees:

- **Perfect weather.** Expect sunny mid-70s Fahrenheit days and a coastal breeze throughout the
  event.
- **Computing infrastructure.** SDSC is the place to explore cutting-edge high-performance
  computing systems and next-generation server architecture, with the people who run them.
- **The coast.** A beautiful cliff trail hike along the La Jolla scenic coastal bluff offers
  breathtaking ocean views, a perfect way to step away from the sessions.

## Get involved

There are three main ways to help build the program, and we strongly encourage you to sign up:

- **Program committee.** Help shape the conference by reviewing submissions, organizing tracks,
  and guiding technical sessions.
- **Keynote speakers.** Nominate yourself or suggest inspiring leaders you would like to see
  deliver keynote presentations.
- **Special programs.** Propose or lead community sessions, including hack days, birds of a
  feather (BoF) sessions, and interactive workshops.

If you are interested in volunteering or have an idea to propose, get in touch at the username
`zonca` on the domain of SDSC (sdsc.edu). It is early, so this is the best moment to get involved
while the program is still being shaped.

Exact dates for Gateways 2027 are not announced yet, but the first round of calls for the program
committee, keynotes, and special sessions will go out soon. I look forward to building Gateways
2027 together with you, and I hope to see you in San Diego.
