Widowed Jessica Fletcher didn't intend to become a famous writer. It all started with one story written just to occupy her time after her husband, Frank died. When she discovers that her nephew, Grady Fletcher found her book and gave it to a "friend," Kitt Donovan, who really works for a publisher and Jessica agrees to come to New York City and ends up solving a murder there, unintentionally becoming an amateur sleuth. From that time on, murder and all sorts of trouble seem to find Jessica wherever she goes. When she is in her Maine hometown, Cabot Cove, she is sometimes assisted by Sheriff Amos Tupper, who is not the sharpest tool in the shed; sometimes with Dr. Seth Hazlitt; and also Tupper's replacement, former New York City cop, Mort Metzger. Occasionally, other sleuths help her like Boston P.I., Harry McGraw, shady Chicago Private Eye, Charlie Garrett and reformed thief, Dennis Stanton. Jessica is a good judge of character and notices very small details. In the later seasons, she moves to New York, serves as only the narrator in some episodes and teaches criminology at Manhattan University.
