Buffers are GregTech's standard-issue automated item transport blocks. In general, any item inputted to them by another block will be automatically exported through their red side.
Buffers consume 1EU per item moved. To compensate for this, they have small internal energy storages, and can automatically output EU through their red side.
As they are GregTech meta-tile entities, all Buffers accept
Covers and
Upgrades.
There are three types of Buffers: the
Small Electric Buffer, the
Large Electric Buffer, and the
Advanced Buffer.
By default, all Buffers can accept 32 EU/p
(LV), and output 32 EU/t
(LV). This is, of course, increasable by installing Transformer Upgrades.
Small Electric Buffer :
Most automation purposes can be handled with the Small Electric Buffer. Any item inputted to any side other than the red side will be automatically sent out through the red side.
GUI:

Click on the blue energy button to enable/disable energy output on red side.
Click the red circuit to enable/disable redstone behavior: (emit a Redstone signal if the Buffer contains an item)
Click the redstone torch button to invert redstone behavior (emit if empty).
Small Electric Buffers are created by un-crafting a Large Electric Buffer.

Large Electric Buffer :
The Large Electric Buffer functions much like the Small Electric Buffer, but can store up to 27 stacks of items internally (one standard chest), to help avoid backups in the transport chain.

Click on the blue energy button to enable/disable energy output on red side.
Click the red circuit to enable/disable redstone behavior: (emit a Redstone signal if the Buffer contains items)
Click the redstone torch button to invert redstone behavior (emit if empty).

Advanced Buffer :
The Advanced Buffer is an interesting variation to the automated item input concept, allowing you to directly specify what slot to place the inputted items in. This is, for instance, very useful for automating an IC
2 Nuclear Reactor, as you can specify exactly which slot to place the components in.
Item slots are ordered from left to right and from top to bottom. Note that the first slot is always slot 0.

Clicking the - and + buttons will decrease/increase slot number by 1.
Shift-Clicking the - and + buttons will decrease/increase slot number by 16.
Click on the blue energy button to enable/disable energy output on red side.
Click the red circuit to enable/disable redstone behavior: (emit a Redstone signal if the Buffer contains an item)
Click the redstone torch button to invert redstone behavior (emit if empty).
