Born. in Scotland Apr. 3, 1761; d. Mar. 20, 1854 in Nelson, Tioga, PA (originally called Beecher's Island). Married after 1816 to Sarah LUGG Clinch Blackwell, b. abt. 1777 in Bisley, Gloucestershire, d. Jan. 21, 1867 in Nelson. John's birthplace in Scotland and parentage are unknown. He was in Philadelphia by 1777. He had a tailor shop and later was a land agent. In 1810, his brother Joseph, and the remainder of Joseph's family came to America; some of the children having come by 1801. Sam Hazlett, a son-in-law of Joseph, had purchased land in Nelson. John and Joseph purchased nearby land, including the island, from the Beecher family. The Campbells and Hazletts migrated from Stroudsburg, PA by early 1811.
He continued clearing the land and farmed. He owned several mills, including a grist mill and a fulling mill. The farm was later sold to Artemus Locey. John is not known to have any children or other wives.
