Introduction[edit]

In layman's terms, RSS [archive] is a http link that can be used for notifications when an update takes place on a website, like when a blog is posted: [1]

RSS ... is a web feed that allows users and applications to access updates to websites in a standardized, computer-readable format. These feeds can, for example, allow a user to keep track of many different websites in a single news aggregator. The news aggregator will automatically check the RSS feed for new content, allowing the list to be automatically passed from website to website or from website to user. This passing of content is called web syndication. Websites usually use RSS feeds to publish frequently updated information, such as blog entries, news headlines, or episodes of audio and video series.

RSS Reader in Whonix ™[edit]

A recommendation for a privacy-friendly [2] [3] [4] [5] and user-friendly RSS reader is still being researched. Reader help and suggestions are welcome.

RSS to Email[edit]

Recommended knowledge:

For example rssforward [archive] (not affiliated with Whonix ™ and neither recommended for or against) is a RSS to email service. At the time of writing there are also free RSS to email services. As free services do not leave a money trail it is easier to use them anonymously.

If you frequently read particular websites (such as a blog) like the Whonix ™ News Blog -- as recommended on the Download page in the News chapter -- and do not mind the RSS to email service mail provider knowing that you subscribed to that blog, [6], then such a service can be utilized to stay in touch with the latest Whonix ™ news.

For better security a new email address can be created with Tor so that it is exclusively used to receive notifications about website updates. Note that the mail provider could spoof the notification mails.

At the moment it is safest to read blogs manually in Tor Browser or to use a privacy-friendly [2] [3] [4] [5] RSS reader inside Whonix ™.

RSS to SMS[edit]

There are also (free) RSS to SMS services which may be convenient, but they are considered even less anonymous than RSS to Email.
