BRIGADIER GENERAL MITCHELL M. ZAIS
CHIEF OF STAFF
U.S. ARMY RESERVE COMMAND


BG Mitchell M. Zais
Brigadier General Mitchell Zais was born at Fort Bragg, North Carolina and reared at Army posts around the world. He was graduated from the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, with an engineering degree and commissioned in the infantry.

He has served in a wide variety of infantry units - airborne, air assault, mechanized, ceremonial, standard, Bradley, and light infantry - in Vietnam, the United States, and Korea. He commanded two rifle companies, an infantry battalion, and a light infantry brigade. His staff experience is primarily in military plans and operations, having served as assistant operations officer at battalion and brigade level; chief of operations, plans, and exercises for an infantry battalion (S3) and division (G3); assistant war plans officer for a corps; and Chief of War Plans for the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff. He has also served as a social aide in the White House; as Executive Officer to the Commander in Chief, U.S. Southern Command in Panama; as the commanding general of the Coalition Joint Task Force (Forward) in Kuwait; and as commanding general of Joint Task Force Provide Refuge for Kosovar refugees in the United States. His previous assignment was as Deputy Commanding General - Maneuver at Fort Riley, Kansas.

General Zais is a graduate of both the Command and General Staff College and the School for Advanced Military Studies where he was awarded a Masters of Military Art and Science degree. He was also graduated from the National War College where he studied national security affairs and served as a research fellow. He holds Master of Science and Ph.D. degrees in social psychology and organizational behavior from the University of Washington.

His service includes assignment as assistant professor on the faculty at West Point. He has written and published extensively in the fields of military doctrine and leadership in such journals as Military Review, Army, Parameters, Armed Forces Journal, and the Journal of Applied Psychology.

General Zais' awards and decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Medal, the Ranger badge, and the Airborne and Combat Infantryman's badges.
