General Information:
With over 15,000 students and 23 schools, the Coweta County School System is located in one of the fastest growing counties in the country. The system is experiencing enrollment growth of approximately 6-8% each year. The two new schools opening this fall make a total of 14 elementary schools, five middle schools, three high schools, and an alternative school. Additional elementary schools and a new middle school are planned for the immediate future. System Philosophy: The administration, faculties, and staffs believe that education in
a democratic society exists primarily to provide each child the opportunity
to develop to his or her greatest potential while under the supervision
and guidance of competent, trustworthy, and knowledgeable adults. The educators'
responsibility in that development is to help students acquire the skills
which will promote sound character, responsible citizenship, intellectual
sufficiency, and personal fulfillment in a changing society. Citizens,
parents, and all school professionals expect and respect competent education.
They recognize that each student has unique potential for development that
can be realized in a balanced program which accepts individual differences.
It is recognized that education should affirm students as valuable, responsible,
and capable of learning.
Excellent Teachers and Excellent Schools: A school system priority is to recruit and retain superior teachers
and to provide quality staff development for all employees. Among
the teachers who have won national and state recognition is the winner
of a $25,000 Milken National Educator Award, who is also the 1993 Georgia
Teacher of the Year, a 1994 finalist for the National Teacher Hall of Fame,
and the 1998 Georgia Teacher of the Year. Ten teachers, including a 1995
winner, have claimed the top $5,000 award in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Honor Teacher Program. During the award's 11 year history, five Coweta
teachers have won $1,000 runner-up awards in addition to the ten finalist
honors. Others honored include a 1994 winner of the Presidential Awards
for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching, a 1996 Georgia Law-Related
Education Teacher of theYear, a semi-finalist for the 1995 Georgia
Teacher of the Year, and a finalist for the 1999 Georgia Teacher of the Year.
Parent and Community Involvement: The Business-Education-Community Partnership Program (BECP) is celebrating
another successful year as a bridge between the schools and community,
fostering mutual understanding and sharing of goals and concerns between
these groups. Because business, community, and schools have common goals,
they come together through the BECP Program to guarantee Coweta County
students the education they need to face a future filled with change.
A business/education/community partnership council increases communication
between the business community and the school system. This council
advises the superintendent and provides opportunities for the business
representatives to give input and receive information regarding school
programs. Since the program began, a systemwide school volunteer
project has been organized, and local businesses, industries, and civic
and professional groups have become partners with all schools and the system.
The system has also been a leader with its mentor program which pairs adult
role models with children who can benefit from the extra support.
Electronic Links to Global Learning: Internet use and instruction in computer skills in Coweta County's schools
have been featured in both the March and April (1996) issues of Atlanta
Computer Currents magazine. The articles discuss the partnership
of a number of business partners with the school system. This partnership
is an effort to link all of the county's schools together and to the Internet
using fiber optic cable. For the project, companies that are normally competitors
come together to be "partners for education." Another example of
global learning is the pairing of schools in Coweta with partner schools
in Scotland. The students in the paired schools communicate via the
Internet and video conferences.
Strong Academic Programs: The goal of Coweta County Schools is to provide an education foundation which will enable all students to take their places in a global society. From pre-school special education services to articulation agreements with area colleges and technical schools, programs are available to meet the needs of a wide variety of students. Among these programs are
