On September 1, 1997, at 5 p.m. the U.S. Botanic Garden Conservatory officially closed for a period of about three years to undergo extensive renovation. Although educational programs previously announced in the 1997 Calendar of Events, including the fall and winter flower shows, have been canceled, off-site programs will be offered as described below. In addition, visitors continue to be welcome in the USBG's Bartholdi Park.

Orchids of the World January 17 through March 8, 1998 Smithsonian Institution, S. Dillon Ripley Center, 1100 Jefferson Drive, S.W., Washington, D.C. 20560 This is the Fourth Annual Orchid Exhibition and is presented jointly by the USBG and the Smithsonian Institution. An Orchid Festival will be held on February 7 from Noon to 4 p.m. in conjunction with the exhibition. Adult activities at the festival will include "behind the scenes" tours with horticulturists and demonstrations on how to propagate orchids, grow orchids under lights, arrange orchids, and make orchids into corsages. For children, the festival will offer face painting, an orchid coloring book, a puppet show, "pot a pet orchid," and making ice cream with vanilla orchid beans. Open House at the U.S. Botanic Garden Production Facility Saturday, March 21, 1998 Tours at 10 a.m., 11a.m, and 2p.m. Fee: $3.00 Only once each year do we invite the public to see our growing facility, the largest greenhouse complex supporting a public garden in the United States. The site, completed in 1994, includes 85,000 square feet under glass divided into 34 greenhouse bays and 16 environmental zones. In addition to foliage and nursery crops, you'll see our plant collection, temporarily in residence while the Conservatory is under renovation.
