School Age Mothers Program
The Pregnant Minor/School-Age Mothers (SAM) program is a secondary education program providing academic instruction and support services for pregnant and parenting teens. The program operates at three sites: Castlemont and Oakland Tech High Schools and Sanborn Park in Oakland, and the Eden Center in San Leandro in the Girls, Inc. complex.
The academic component of the program is designed to enable students to continue or complete their education, secure gainful employment, and develop skills needed to provide a caring and safe environment for themselves and their children. The support services include:
- Infant care centers that provide hands-on supervised experiences in caring for babies
- Parenting classes to reinforce positive parenting techniques
- Health care instruction and community service that provide information on pregnancy, facts on child bearing, prenatal care, and self-help resources
- Vocational counseling
- Nutritional information
Students may be referred to the program by parents, counselors, nurses, doctors, other students, and local agencies.
