It just doesn't fit my idea of the classic bard. We are seldom portrayed as
tanks. We are singers of songs. Maybe even lifters of purses or players of
practical jokes. Light on our feet and quick about our wits.

Just my humble opinion. I try not to tell anyone how to play there
character.

Why no plate?

I have full platemail (bronze) and it suits me nicely. The damage it can
take seems to have a significant advantage over banded. In a group I am
valued as a tank in that I can take a lot of damage, though not necessarily
dish it out. Whatever hits me, hits me for less than my non-platemail
companions.
