Been there, done that:

Bard starts to sing a song
[start to type "A LDC j..."]
You miss a note and stop singing
[crap, backspace a couple times, hit shift-del, enter]
4443 [crap, hit enter to get out of chat mode]
Bard starts to sing a song
[start to type "A LDC is behi..."]
A greater kobold bashes you for 2 points damage
You stop singing
[crap again, this time just hit enter]
Bard tells the group, "A LDC is behi"
Bard starts to sing a song

Typing short messages is fine if things aren't hectic.
Unfortunately, you rarely need group leadership when things
aren't hectic. Bards tend to be busiest when you need group
communication the most.
