Dan,

I think your testing was flawed.

Higher AC provides better damage absorption. Cloth and Bronze would protect
just as well if they had the same AC value. This has been confirmed
publicly by Verant.

You tested Banded and Bronze and Crafted. For each test your AC was higher
than before. That's why you took less damage.
