Universal powerline bus (or UPB) is an emerging standard for communication among devices used for home automation. It uses power line wiring for signaling and control. It is based on the X10 concept but supposedly more reliable. This page gives an overview of UPB.
X10 is an interface protocol governing data communication over AC power lines for the purpose of automatic, remote control of lights and other household devices. This document specifies house and device codes, function codes, serial parameters, message format, and so on of the protocol.
